Superpower

Sorry, no pol discussions here. :D

Has anyone ever played IMHO the worst game ever made? Or its sequel?

The AI was absolutely horrible. Within a month of game time, India/Pakistan are firing missles off every other day, and any war becomes nuclear in the blink of an eye. Fun, actually.

So, what do you think of it? Two things could redeem it: the custom units or the missile launching system. With the nukes, its very easy to forget you can leave the missle launch screen and end up emptying the US missle supply in a few turns.

I liked the first one because you could send a small covert force to French Guyana, blame the UK and watch NATO tear itself apart. Then pick up the pieces.

The second one is not that bad. You can make adjustments to the agressiveness of the AI and not that many wars become nuclear, unless China is involved.

Yeah. A real disappointment. Play this (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=963), this (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?name=Crisis+in+The+Kremlin) or this (http://www.heartsofiron2.com/) instead.

HOI2 is a great game, but you cant compare to Superpower's 'today' timeframe.

Nope. But there are mods in development that are starting to take shape - there's a modern-day scenario and a 1961-1991 (I think) scenario in the works.

I really wanted to like Superpower, but it just didn't cut it. You can easily take over the world by raising your taxes up to 70%, researching full levels of artillery and strike aircraft, and churning them out and holding off all who oppose you. Some countries are too small to do that, of course, but even a third-world african country can do a lot of damage.

It has so much potential, but it's really fucked up. They need to decide whether they want it to be an economic/political sim or an in-depth military sim. It's attempting to do both at the moment and is failing miserably at each of them. Once they get one model down pat, they can focus on a sequel that does the other and hopefully live that dream.

As it stands, the economy is illogical and has far too many loopholes to unrealistic success, and the military system is simply dumb.

If they simplified it by having just single "infantry division" or "armoured division" units, with stats that vary as you go up in technology (something like HOI2), it'd be better. The design function is just a gimmick at the moment, as cool as it is in principle - especially since the AI doesn't know how to use it and is stuck with year 2000 and before technology in 2025. And then they could worry about the economics. It shouldn't be feasible for me to play as Saudi Arabia and become an agricultural powerhouse, for example - yet it's as simple as nationalising the oil industry and using the profits to build up in that department. (also of note - why can you make certain economic sectors illegal, and what's the point in doing so? It has no effect. Being able to legalise narcotic cultivation is an interesting feature, but it does nothing in practice. But why on earth would you declare fruits and vegetables illegal? Ugh) And some countries that would otherwise be fun to play such as North Korea are totally useless due to their debt *interest* being almost as great as their entire GDP. Sigh. If they could do it right, it would be really, really, cool though. Shadow President is close to what it should be, even though it does have its share of flaws.

Yeah, I know. I went off on a tangent and had a little rant. Sorry :p

^Apparently still in development...but there is no alpha out as yet.

^ This one has an alpha out, but I haven't tried it as yet. It'll probably be on its way to completion in a few months.

If you haven't already, anyway, I suggest you have a look at C.O.R.E. and Stony Road - they're both WW2 mods, but add a lot to the game.

Just go here and have a look at what you can find:
