Homophobic Meaning

This is not against or for homosexualism or homophobics. Look at the roots of homophobic. Homo, in greek, means same. In homosexual it would mean same (gender) sexual preference. Phobic, as most people know, means fear in greek. Homophobic would then mean something like same fear, or if you stretch homo like in homosexual, it could mean same gender fear. This would mean that you have a fear of your gender or in the less stretched out part, it would mean that you were scared of similar things. In the latter form, instead of conservatives being homophobic, liberals would be homophobic :p.

What's not to be scared of? Imagine ten of me all in one place. Now imagine that you're in that place too.

Now imagine that we're feeling ornery and just had a few beers. :)

Though it is usually pretty hypocritical hatred (or bias) many hate gay men but seem to love watching homosexual women go at it.

I am not homophobic. I mean think about it. If a gay guy hits on you (this example only works if your straight a guy) then its like a girl hitting on you. only you don't want to go out with her.

Wow. No-one has ever known that. Well done.

'Homophobia' is not a Greek word, neither is 'homosexual' for that matter, they are both words developed by English-speakers with limited knowledge of classical languages to refer to a sexual orientation toward members of the same sex, and hatred of those of that orientation, respectively.

Well, I just think that it is fear of homosexuals, (usually not lesbians) and usually a homophobe would show this by making fun of them, or hurting them or something like that.
P.S. you should refer to it as homophobia not homophobic, a person who has homophia is homophobic.

Unless, of course, you look at the definition of the root -phobic, rather than the definition of the separate word.

-phobic
One entry found for -phobic.
Main Entry: -phobic
Function: adjective combining form
Etymology: French -phobique, from Late Latin -phobicus, from Greek -phobikos, from -phobia
1 a : having an intolerance or aversion for <photophobic> <Anglophobic> b : exhibiting a phobia for <claustrophobic>
2 : lacking affinity for <hydrophobic>

It is fairly clear that the homo- portion of the word refers to homosexual. The -phobic root means "having an intolerance or aversion for". Thus, a homophobic person has an intolerance or aversion towards homosexuals. It's pretty simple.

Homophobia is an aversion. It doesn't necessarily involve outright fear.

And err.. Isn't it spelled touché?

One could argue that aversion stems from fear, though.

I tend to think most things stem from fear. Fear is pretty universal and natural.
