I still don't know it...:D

I'm not kidding either. "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit für das deutsche Vaterland, dafür lasst uns alle streben, something something hand in hand."

That's as far as that goes for me.

Here is a German perspective of the whole phenomenon: http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/spiegel/0,1518,422401,00.html

Here's the text and translation, by the way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutschlandlied#Lyrics_and_translation

People like to go apeshit about the "Deutschland über alles" thing, but in reality it refers more to "Germany above all the little fiefdoms and so on", ie allegiance to the whole, rather than "Germany above France, Britain and all the rest of them".

And I see I even made a mistake in my little exercise above. :D

Try being an American soldier sleeping in on an off duty day, and hearing a German band strike up the tune. Mind you, I had the impression that we won WW II, but at that moment, I realized that we had merely been assimilated.

Oh, and they did give up a verse or two.

In spite of the fact that it's also the correct way to say "I am a jelly doughnut," no adult German speaker could possibly have misunderstood Kennedy's meaning in context.

I think I know it, there might be an error or two in their somewhere.
God save our gracious Queen,
God save our noble Queen,
God save the Queen.
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

Oh Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall,
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save the Queen.

And me, an ignorant American :p . Sorry, I had to. 'Cause I'm anal like that.

Edit: About the above, I think it just searches for 'keywords' in the article and puts them in the box. I guess 'Adolf Hitler' is one of these keywords. Then, one can have all articles that mention Hitler emailed to oneself... so one can put them in one's Hitler shrine.

I'm scared of anthems and flags. My teachers have taught us in class that having pride in your country is obsolete, like the bible. I'm scared that Germany is following bush's republicans, which will mean that we might get fascism.

I think that it would be impossible to grow-up in the United States and not know atleast the vast majority of the Star Spangled banner, mainly because of the omnipresence of sports. (also, unlike what I've heard about "God Save the Queen" all verses are usually sung.)

Sorry for the double post, but this is second time you've taken a shot at (presumably American) public education, were are you geting that public schools are teaching that the Bible is obsolete. (or that they're teaching "progressive" or any other religous theories for that matter)

Well, they teach the theories in class, and I ask them more about it, and they say that it's for progress. I trust my teachers over people in other professions because they are NEA and government certified as experts in educaation.

Actually, we only sing the first bit of the Star Spangled Banner. The next bit starts 'and the foe's haughty host... something something river, something something something'. I bet you could find it if you wanted to.

@Conscience and Truth:
I don't necessarily think so. Now, obviously too much pride in your country can be harmful, as the Nazis and now America is proving*. But some pride is hardly 'obsolete'. I guess I'm proud of American ideals, free speech and voting and all that. Now, we're a bit spotty with those ideals, but I don't see it as wrong to be proud that my country tries to uphold them, and often (although not always) succeeds.

*No, I'm not comparing America to Nazis. I'm just saying that some Americans take patriotism too far.

Those are the words to the poem not the song.

Anyway about this wholee "progressive" theories bussiness, I find it fanscenating and very inplausable that any religious theories are being taught in public schools.

Never said I was scared of Bush per se, although I don't agree with everything he does or says. More, I'm ambivalent about him. But moving on ...

Take the people who say 'we're the greatest country in the world'. Now, we have stuff going for us, yes (democracy, the free market, freedom of religion, speech etc). But so do most other developed nations. I think that saying 'we're the greatest country in the world' is unecessarily provocative, and doesn't really do anything besides make the speaker sound like an ignorant ass.

Edit: I'm laughing at Neu Leonstein's 'theory of everything' link right now. Pfft.

Although even if is did say "Germany above France, Britain and all the rest of them," it wouldn't be as bad as some anthems, like the French one, where they want to fertilise their field with their enemies blood.

Er, you're not German, are you? I'm just reading your sentence wrong, right? You're what - American and .... christian conservative but without the patriotism...? Somebody here care to enlighten me? Seems other people know him/her.

My take on the matter was discussed a couple weeks ago in my "OMG, I've never seen so many Germans flag in my life, I'm scared!" thread. What I meant is subsumed in this link Neu Leonstein put up above: http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/spiegel/0,1518,422401,00.html It's a long article but really good, it covers pretty much everything and gives a good view into that specifically German scepticism/fear/schizophrenia on flag waving et.al.

Took me a while to figure out what you're talking about there- should pay more attention to sigs. :p I tried to talk him out of believing in this, but due to not being able to offer a more handy grip on things, I failed. ;)
