For the record, who was the most successful debutant ever at the WC? I'm thinking West Germany in 1954, if you count them seperately from the pre-division team.

Hmm... I like to discount the first World Cup... no matter who won that, they were always going to be debutants.

North Korea in 1966 was a shocker. Qualified to the second round by eliminating Italy, then began dominating Portugal 3-0 before finally losing 3-5. That must have been a couple of games worth watching...

Of course, this time round the Ukraine has made it to the quarter-finals in their first ever World Cup appearance.

Oh yeah, I remember North Korea. Pity it had to be such a lousy country; anybody else and you wouldn't feel weird about feeling happy for them.

From what I've heard, they had a huge fan base amongst English supporters. Cheering for the underdog and all that. There were English fans waving North Korean flags; now that must have been weird.

You have to feel glad for the players, though, whatever their nationality.

Didn't they win the second also?
They have won 2.

But in saying that the World Cup used to be pretty Mickey Mouse like Wimbledon and the US Open of Golf.

Especially only 10 years after the Korean War...
But in saying that England was a lousy Socialist Country and full of Eastern European Commie Immigrants.
