Anime Expo - who's going?

Taking a break from all the threads about terrorists, who hates who, who's the sexiest, whether homosexuality is wrong or what-have-you.... I'll set myself up for a truckload of "zOMG ANIME IS TEH SUXX0R, U NERD!" instead! =D
Anime Expo is coming up this weekend in Anaheim, California. It's a big convention, over 40,000 attendees last year. Surely I'm not the only Nationstates player who will be in attendance?

Well, AX does have a pretty big dealer's hall. I know there's at least one or two hentai dealers. I imagine the obnoxious yaoi dealer will be there again, too.

You should see the cosplay skills in Asia. I went to an anime convention in Beijing and my cousin had her cosplay costume custom made. It was absolutely insane. There were so many good people there. Compared to that, North American anime conventions are stupid.
...okay, fine. North American ones are better planned and more...spacious.
I'd go, if
a) I lived in California
b) I had the money to go there
c) I had any interest whatsoever in anime
As all three of those are currently quite untrue, I may be forced to stay home.

but it depends how far ahead you plan your cosplay stuff

Well, my group of friends usually gets serious about working on their AX costumes around late March/early April. This year we mostly got going on our stuff in May, but last year my friend and I started way back in January (we built a God Gundam costume- the thing stands 7+ feet tall!)
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!

Well, another thing I liked about the Beijing convention was that there was more of a variety to the cosplay. You can find characters from every anime imaginable. The local one I went to had the entire case of Inuyasha over and over again and that was about it.
So what are you going as this year?

Well, on the subject of cosplayers being professional in Asia...also consider that the "fanboys" take it to a professional level too. Scary, it was. There were so many 8" camera lenses in attendance and being fired off at close range from risque angles that one might have easily mistaken it for a Paparazzi convention.
By the way, what is "nijon" cosplay? Is that a spelling error or something?

I believe Stephanie/Firefury will be going painted entirely blue (unless she was deliberately misleading us on the Space Sector RPRA boards, and we all know mods never do that! <.<), armed with some kind of fearsome musical instrument.

I'm actually cosplaying Ember Mclain, a character from an American cartoon. I figure if people can cosplay Harry-flipping-Potter to AX, I can get away with a cartoon character who looks like a J-rocker. And here's the "fearsome musical instrument":

Isn't that Nihon? Nijon would be something else entirely, IIRC.

ACK! ELECTRIC GUITAR OF DOOM! (I'm guessing that's not going to replace the Uber Ninja Mod Sword of DOOM, though, right? ;P) Above a certain dB level those things scare me. Well, meh. It won't be replacing the Sword of DEAT, and it won't be breaking any eardrums either- the guitar is non-functional. (Though it doesn't sound too bad when I pluck the strings.)

Cool, just curious, I had a hunch you were trying to say "nihon" or the more traditional "nippon" ...I take it that there are several different ways of using romaji, right? I genuinely am curious, I don`t want to have to tell my students I`ve been teaching them to write romanji wrong for eleven months. And yeah, you`re right, the Asians are definitely a damned sight more dedicated to their cosplaying!

I`ll sympathise with that, I`m forever mixing up the various romaji methods anyway! I was just a little jumpy at the thought that there could be another method of romaji use that I`d missed (perhaps at my loss), sorry that enquiry came off as a little strong! Cheers, all!

Here's some dedicated American cosplay for you people XP
http://images2.cosplay.com/photos/39/390613.jpg
It took my friend and I six months of no social lives whatsoever to construct that thing. The support frame is welded steel rod, the feet are 7 inch high platform shoes, and the completed costume stands 7'4" tall from feet to the top of the crests. I've got an entire gallery of in-progress pictures from building that monster.

What's really fun is every year since I started attending Anime Expo (1999 was my first year), there's this Christian group that ALWAYS is booked at the same time as us. So the cosplayers can really offend the Christians just by walking around in costume XD

Heh, the age-old dub vs sub issue. I will admit, the overall quality of dubs HAS come a LONG way from when I first got heavily into anime in the mid-90s. There are even a few dubs I like more than the original sub, and a few where I like the dub and the sub equally =p

Well, mine had a really bad bleaching job at the beginning, so the blue only lasted for a couple of days. I kinda like the green, but it disappeared in a week too. So I was left with a horrible copper colour of hair that had random black spots in it. >.<

With 190* episodes to download, you'll be doing that for a while :P. Which subber are you getting them from?
* Apparently the guy before me in charge of Anime Club at my school DID do that, because we have it all on disk. I don't do the actuall downloading (I can't), so I got stuck inventorying all of our disks. Most of them went straight in the trash (IE: He had a lot of really crappy stuff in there. Then again, the club is more into progressive Anime, so they tend to be more descriminating.)
