I Love Creationists!

Not that I agree with anything they say of course, it's just pure bullshit. Actually, I used to dislike them because of their idiocy.

But now that I gave this issue more thought - maybe it's good that they're around. In fact, it's great!

For something like a century, the USA has been a world leader in Science and Technology. Today they produce something like 80% of the total publication output in the World. So many scientific and technological marvels have been pressed out by the USAmericans that they underlie most aspects of modern life. Stuff like motorcar mass production, aeroplanes, electric power grid, nuclear power, computers, space probes, internet, human genome project... well, maybe not cell phones.

I think all these success stories have gone to their head. They've become so good that they are getting really cocky.

Besides this is all getting old. USA this USA that, freedom democracy blah blah blah, then I invade your country and do a regime change! Hah World! How d'ja like them apples!

Of course, no other country or group of countries can really do much about this. The only way that the USA can get its ass kicked is by itself. When social groups get cocky, they forget the foundations of their own success. Like Christianity and Islam, doing their own crackdowns on little bizarre religious groups they call "cults". Nevermind that they started as little bizarre religious groups themselves.

So here the rot is internal. You have concerned passionate conservative whatevers worried about the "immorality" and "godlessness" of evolution or cosmology or any part of Science they have bones with. It's all about the future of the children! Hurray AMERICA! THE GREATEST NATION IN THE MOTHERFUCKING WORLD!

Amidst all this happy moralistic jingoism, embraced by their compassionistic world-peacing sovereign Bush, Science, one of the main reasons they can even get cocky in the first place, is getting shot. IN THE FACE! (Apologies to Jon Stewart)

Now instead of "just" doing world-class science to compete with the top minds in the world, USAmerican scientists have to waste time and resources and risk their reputation (maybe even lives?) to debate Creationists and address Creationist issues. Educators now have a superb opportunity to press out quasi-educated Leaders of the Future who believe that whole purpose of Science is to be a tool for proving the Bible.

Truth be told, I sometimes wonder if this embarrassment to USAmerican science will have a negative effect on the whole endeavor, since so much Science is done there. Then I remember that the USA has a policy of buying foreign Nobel Laureattes anyway (especially California), and anyone with a bit of money can play this cheating game. When top USAmerican embryonic stem cell biologists or molecular geneticist or cosmologist get sick of USA, we welcome them with $$$ arms! World class Science, at your doorstep - Cheers to USA shooting itself IN THE FACE! (double apologies).

Science won't suffer much. Only USA would.

Exactly. Let them isolate themselves scientifically until finally what they are teaching is no longer science. Also allow them to do this politically and socially until they are completely poor and backwards, and inferioir to the rest of the world. Now we just need to sit back and wait...

I just don't see that big of a debate anymore between creationists and scientists. Sure, the actual topic of the debate is hasn't changed at all, but I think the heat has died down considerably. I really don't think scientists are wasting a whole lot of time and effort trying to beat off the creationists with a stick, and no one I know is trying to use science to prove the Bible is true. I think the only people who are challenging science around here or trying to use it to prove the Bible is true are the religious militants/fanatics, and they're in the minority, even around here (and I live in "the Bible Belt"). Evolution is taught in pretty much all the schools around here.

Basically, I think science is safe and sound here in the USA, at least from my point of view.

Yes, so what? The poster has correctly observed that US science is constantly having to dance around the toes of the religious right majority in their country. He has fairly predicted that this will stagnate Scientific progress and developement in that country until they are an international joke. His tone is Anti-America and Anti-religious, but he has explained why, so theres no problem.

Says you. I think I have a point to make. In a political satire style.

It's not a presidential election year, just wait till 2008 rolls around and we'll be seeing the same Evolution vs. Creationism and Gay-marriage debates we did in 2004.

Scientists, nah, not so much. In fact, in Kansas the scientific community actually boycotted a public debate on teaching Creationism in public schools because they said the issue was dead and over. The religious fundamentalists however, are still marching strong (In some areas).

USAmerican scientists have to waste time and resources and risk their reputation (maybe even lives?) to debate Creationists and address Creationist issues.
In a few areas this is still the case, although the majority of the country is decidedly apathetic, and so poses no threat to the progress of science. :p

The debate has indeed reached the stage where it is no longer interesting to report on it, since people have heard it too often. Somewhat like Darfour or the tsunamivictims: the misery continues, but noone really cares anymore.

Which of course is bad. And exactly what the ID crowd was aiming for, since now they can insidiously seep in.
