So does anyone here have it or know someone who has it?
http://www.celiac.org/

In short we can't eat gluten which is in wheat malt barely and someother stuff. (that's the really short version)

No offence intended, I think I've been looking at http://b3ta.com too much<g>.
A mate of mine is a celiac but I always put it down to him being an only child and hypochondrial. I think he thinks he's a bloody werewolf tbh.

Throw silver at him to find out.

There is a poster here who has a kid with it and she's posted about it before. Name starts with a "Smu" or something like that. (She'll kill me for forgetting her name, but, it's early in the morning! Have mercy!)

Edit: Smunkeeville! *escapes her wrath*

"Baguetten" what kind of a name is that, on this thread, I asks you.

one of my flatmates has it. i don't like her very much so i don't really care i'm afraid. i understand it can be quite uncomfortable, so you have my sympathy if you have it. i have chronic indigestion, that's uncomfortable too.

There are baguettes which are gluten free. We'll just pretend my moniker refers to one of those.

I think it's nonsense. I have quite a few friends who claim to have it and have medical certificates confirming it, I sneak wheat into their food and they seem fine... until I tell them... that's all I'm saying

Aren't the affects delayed? IIRC, my counsellor told me that the biggest problem, besides stomach aches, was her susceptibility to Chrones, should she eat wheat.

"Bloating" and "discomfort"... come on, back in the good old days we accepted these as normal side effect of eating. But, in the interests of science, I will continue "experimenting" (also known as potentially endangering the health) on my friends...

You've apparently never seen a child suffering malnutrition because of this, or a biopsy of its intestinal mucosa and how injured it is.

This is a normal mucosa with normal intestinal villi:
http://www.gihealth.com/newsletter/29/normal_villi.jpg

This is a mucosa of a patient with celiac disease:
http://www.gihealth.com/newsletter/29/loss-villi.jpg

See the difference? The normal histology is pretty mush effaced.

This is not an "allergy" in the sense that you eat something and you break out and get symptoms at once. This is an "allergy" in the sense that the body, when you ingest gluten, breaks down your intestinal mucosa making it exceedingly difficult to absorb nutrients from your food, which leads to all sorts of delayed symptoms.

So, stop being a jerk and stop making your "friends" ill.

There's no tactful way to put it, you are an idiot. I can reasonably estimate every rational person had determined I would not actually test the medical legitimacy of a disease on my friends

There is no tactful way to put it, you are Rotovia. I can reasonably estimate every rational person would not have a higher expectation, seeing as you just lied and trolled about feeding people with celiac disease wheat, and this isn't the first time you claim similar acts.

Don't be surprised to be taken for a jerk when you attempt to regale people with stories of being one.

I cannot believe, even after having this explained to you, that you cannot grasp this concept.

Actually, Celiac disease often has no symptoms; unfortunately, the damage is still occuring. That's why if it runs in the family it might be wise to regulate consumption of gluten just to be on the safe side.

They even have gluten-free croissants these days. My mum makes them from rice flour and... something.

There's tons of stuff available. I can't guarantee how all of it tastes, but in reality most of the stuff we eat doesn't contain a lot of gluten.

You could probably eat modest amounts of it without problems as long as you did other things to keep the digestive system healthy (tea, yogurt, beneficial bacteria, nutritional supplements, etc.).

It depends on the severity of the case. My BIL can get away w/ some but my nephew starts having problems w/ even something as small as a hot dog bun. It's a real pain for him to go to B-day parties and friends houses. His teenage years are going to be loads of fun.

IIRC, even most name brand ice creams have gone to a gluten based preservatives to be "all natural" so the cheap stuff is better for him ironically.

...WRONG WRONG WRONG!!

I can't BELIEVE the ignorance of you. It's not necessarily your fault, its just a lack of understanding.

There is no middle ground. Sure, some people don't realise its happening, but the damage is still being done. ANY gluten sets it off. They've done experiements, and six parts per million is the absolute lowest their instruments can measure, and that still sets it off, not just a little but the full blown symptoms.

Ok, that was a little harsh, I'm sorry, but I'm a little bit sensetive as I got diagnosed with it just the other week. Basically, I just get to eat cardboard, rice, unprocessed meat, unprocessed vegetables, and nothing processed. I have to have my own toaster, my own butter, my own everything. Heres a little story: I was just getting better, when I suddenly got worse again. Wanna know why? Its because I sat down to dinner, all the food was gluten free, but there was a tiny wet patch of someones spilt beer, which i put my knife in, which then transferred to my food and then my stomach. I had diahhroea (sorry, spelling is crap), headaches, stomach cramps, bloating and a pissed off attitude for another fortnight. I get pretty strong symptoms, but by no means are they the strongest ever.

I was talking to my aunt the other day, who also has it, and she said I should count myself lucky. Most people didn't even know what celiac disease was five years ago. This is thanks in no small part to Sue Shephard (http://www.coeliacresearch.com/committee.asp) and the rest of the committee. Now Its actually possible to go to some, god forbid, RESTAURANTS and get gf food. This is a pretty new phenomenon here in Australia. Dunno what it's like elsewhere though

Ok, I'm done. If anyone wants to know anything else, I can tell you whatever you need to know. I spent loooong hours talking with Sue and other experts.

Oh yes, my remaining teenage years are gonna be fun (I'm 15 now). Apparently I have to watch what any prospective girls I would be kissing have eaten and drunk :(

I think they can now screen you out of existence at the zygote stage. Isn't that nice.
