WC: Germany vs Sweden

I'm gonna be first to post this thread.

Who do you think will take it?

I'm for Germany, obviously. I think it is the best German team in many, many years. People like to recite the loss to Italy, but that's months ago now. In the matches against Poland and Ecuador the German defense has been pretty solid I think, and Phillip Lahm has been the best defender of the tournament so far (but then, I'm a pretty offensively minded sort of guy). And up front, I don't think anyone can deny that this German side is extremely dangerous.

They go against a Sweden that drew nil-nil against Trinidad & Tobago and scraped through against Paraguay on a late goal. They played a little better in the second half against England, but overall I wasn't impressed. Some of the German press says that they play like Germany used to play, but what you make of that is your own.

My pick is a 3:1 win for Germany.

Big one today. Already going crazy about the game. Fußballfieber? Oh Yeah!

So, we've played a great game so far - that should give the team much self-confidence. And they're playing in Munich - ever seen that arena? The Ufo has landed - it's impressive when Bayern Munich is playing; it's gonna be unbelievable when Germany is playing.

My pick for today's game: 3:1 for Germany.

12:45 - that means I have another 2,5 hours to kill before I head for the city to watch the game.

And for those who have been "infected" as well - have a great time and cheer our team on! Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

I'm surprised I voted with the majority. Hmm.
I'm still wrecked with doubt and scared that we'll be kicked out of the tournament, despite Neu Leonstein's pep talk last night.

Then again, I figure if I just believe in it enough, it'll totally happen. *nods*

Rationally, I'd then go with Germany winning by 1, but I can almost see the game being a draw for a looooong time and then us making a couple quick, giddy goals in the final minutes.

Meh, I dunno.

They have actualy played bloody well, considering that the Ivory Coast are perhaps equal to Ghana, whilst Serbia and Monetgro conceded only once in qualifying.

However, I believe that, irrespective of their performances as of yet, they are remarkably fallible. Primarily, they are reliant upon Sorin and Rodrguez for width, thus rendering them vulnerable to a rapid counter-attack, whilst Riquelme, their integral player, is frankly pedestrian. Uncontrovertably skilled with the ball, but a lightweight defender and apathetic runner, thus reducing the strength of their midfield, and, assuming their opponents play a DM< rendering Argentina toothless.

Furthermore, they have no particularly vaporous pace anywhere in their team, and their goalkeeper remains decidedly flawed.

Would an opponent defensive midfielder stop Riquelme? Gilberto Silva, one of the most accomplished players in that position, played there for Arsenal in the second leg of the Champions' League semi-final this year, and Riquelme still ran the game.

Riquelme's creativity is second-to-none, and his passing is simply phenomenal. In fact, every player in the Argentinian team can pass superbly, and they play to that - they make space with passes rather than running off the ball, as a team like France or England do.

My point is that the England defence, with a DM, would withstand Argentina for as long as they wanted.

It's 50% the team, and 50% on the day. Ivory Coast probably isn't as great as you think, S&M did just as good in qualifying as Ukraine (and look where they are now), and Holland isn't exactly as good as I thought they were either (it's basically The Ruud Van Nistelrooy Show featuring Holland).

Why did Barca get rid of him then? The problem with Riquelme is that for every good game he has, he has four bad ones where he does nothing other than disrupt the team. If he could be consistent, then he would be on a par with Lampard, Gerrard, Kaká, Scweinsteiger, Ljundberg etc as one of the best midfielders in the world (I exclude Ronaldinho because I am sick of the hype here)

He was under massive pressure to perform, because of the high transfer fee Barcelona paid for him, Louis van Gaal treated him like shit, he was played on the wing rather than in the centre, and he lost his confidence as a result. Oh, and his brother was kidnapped just when he arrived in Spain.

And inconsistent performances don't get you nominated for World Player of the Year.

Honestly I think Luis Roman Riquelme is a total waste of space, but I am English and live in Brazil so I am heavily biased against anyone that plays in light blue and white vertical stripes. I also consider players that consider themselves 'creative' and thus decide that they don't have to do any defensive work at all to be a burden on the other players in the team. This is my main beef with the likes of Riquelme and Ronaldinho - they should look at the work done by the likes of Joe Cole or Kaká. Perhaps, but you can't deny that he would be a fantastic asset to have when your team is attacking. Well, your team is Chelsea, so you'd prefer Cole I guess. He's still a great player, whether he defends or not, simply through sheer skill.

Nor do I. They have had complete domination of possession, but are reduced to shooting from distance for most of the time. "This display" is based on two moments of exceptional ability by one player - Klose. Without him, this German team would be average at best. What has Ballack done, or Schweinsteiger? Nothing. What you see can be deceiving. Besides conceding a penalty, Germany played very well. They held Sweden and kept up the pressure, and that's exactly what they needed to do.

Shame about their next game.
From what I've seen of the performances so far this World Cup, we'll be watching the two best teams play just for a spot in the semis, which doesn't seem fair.

I'm talking about Germany vs Argentina in the quarter finals, btw.

AB Again and Whereyouthinkyougoing - I don't know what you two are expecting out of the German team, but they are the best German team, and becoming the best team in world. Their performance today couldn't have been any better. That penalty kick was unnecessary. The foul from which it stemmed wasn't bad enough to warrant a penalty kick.

So how about the two of you concede that Germany is better than you're allowing, and just move along.

Demented - Well, someone has to lose. I'm hoping that Argentina will lose to either Mexico or Germany. Although, it's more likely that Argentina will beat Mexico in their match later today, and play Germany later. I have faith in the German team to outplay the Argentines in their Quarter-Final's match. That's assuming Argentina plays clean and fair (not likely to happen though).

Yeah, I know someone's gotta lose. I just mean on the face of what we've seen so far (and of course assuming Argentina get past Mexico) we'll be watching the two best attacking, in-form teams play each other in the quarter-finals.
Making that game prob the best game of the tournament.
And which means of course the final isn't going to be as good as it could have been and the 2nd best team ain't going to be 2nd.

Of course this is all conjecture and it might be the most boring game ever.

Oh, I'm not saying they're bad. I would certainly agree that they're far better than anyone could have expected (I wouldn't know about "the best German team", I'd guess there've been better, but we're certainly playing a lot better than in a loooong while). Now "the best team in the world" I wouldn't say. I still feel that we get all excited becasue our team is suddenly playing so good when teams like Argentina are playing on the same level already and everybody is pretty much used to it.

But, hello, I have Argentina, Brazil, or (hopefully) Germany for champion, so I certainly believe we're good! :p

Now as for the second half today, I still say that it wasn't good. I didn't get the feeling that they were consciously trying to simply keep the score. To me, it felt both uncoordinated and uninspired.

But yeah, few games are "good" for all 90 minutes, so I'm not going to insist on my view no matter what. Maybe I was just spoiled by the first half. ;)

Germany, they'll keep the ball down there and consider Germany getting at least one goal and keeping the Swedes down to 0. I picked 2 for Germany since they're bound to get another goal somewhere.

Wow! What a game. I'm really happy about the outcome. And have you watched the Argentinia-Mexico game? Congrats Mexico for a wonderful game - that's a game I'll long remember.

So we're going to play Argentinia now? Suits me ;) While I certainly have respect for Argentinia, they are not unbeatable and I'm looking forward to the next game.

HELL YES!

Well I was totally underwhelmed by the German performance in the second half.
Hell Yes #2

First Half was excellent. They went out there knowing exactly that they would win this, and that's how they played. Sweden didn't know what hit them.
I'm also going to eat my words on the more solid German defense now. If they don't do something, Tevez and Saviola are just going to run straight into the box and score.
I also noticed that their percentage of goals out of all the chances has been pretty poor against Poland, Ecuador and this one. They could've won it 5:0 at least, but they didn't. Against even better opposition, that's going to cost them.
The second half was agony to watch for me. I'm pretty critical of the team whenever they play (Rated R for Frequent Very Coarse Language), and that's basically whenever they're not going forward with full throttle. They seemed to settle for the 2:0, and I don't forgive that sort of thing easily. As I said in the OP, I'm pretty offensively minded. The light at the end of the tunnel is that they might have done that by choice, because when it counted against Poland they played the whole thing pushing forward pretty hard.

As for Argentina...they're going to concede goals, I guarantee that. But if the forwards can reproduce some of those early plays, they might score more than they concede. I'm counting on that.

And the Argentines against Mexico, well the Mexicans were great, but to be honest, it wasn't a real World Cup winning performance then either. So the trick might be to just not be intimidated.

And the theory that other teams play worse when they play Germany is definitely gathering steam. If it wasn't like that, people wouldn't still be talking about every single German win as if it was a meaningless fluke.

Nah, the final will be between the two best teams - Argentina and Spain. Now that will be a great match. I wouldn't care which team wins that (though I'd prefer Spain, because they've got Fabregas and Reyes).
