According to the handy-dandy statistics thingy on my MSNSpace, it seems that several NSG folks have already seen my personal site (Fallout from the NS Men's Pagent, I suppose). As such people probably noticed, however, the vast majority of the pics I have posted are landscapes.

So anyway, feel free to look if you like. It is the third link in my signature. I put up some nice sunset shots yesterday.

it is one of relatively few places in the world to have two high-tides in a day (hence its use as a major industrial port)
The Titanic sailed from here (unlike what happened in the movie, iirc)
During WW2 the Spitfire aircraft was made in the greater southampton area, and approx 25,000 local civilians lost their lives

Nothing of any real note about this place. The Queen's official impersonator lived here at one point. She may still do. There's some story linking the village to the Knights Templar. The pickled knight story is fairly interesting. And supposedly the devil once nicked one of the bells from the church, but it was too heavy for him and he dropped it in the woods.

Would post a pic, but those Image/File/CrapShacks are taking forever... So, imagine a down in soutern CA with a ~3500 acre lake in the middle and several thousand 2-3 story buildings surrounding it's north and east shores, and more rural housing to the west, near some mountains.

I really do not think the moon would let that happen... It could be that your spot has particularly high tides, or perhaps even minimalised ones. As far as I know there really is no way to get around the universal nature of how tides work on Earth.

Its funny how moon science gets in the way of truth sometimes

Southampton has 4 high tides a day and 2 low tides a day

Double high water
To try to understand the reasoning behind the description 'Double High Water', one has to look first at the tidal flow throughout the English Channel. When it is High Water at Dover it is Low Water at Land's End and vice versa. Imagine the English Channel as a rectangular tank 300 nautical miles in length and having a uniform depth of 36 fathoms pivoted at its mid-length. If inclined in either direction the water flows towards the lower end, thus giving the effect of High and Low Water at opposite ends. At the point of pivot, however, the level remains constant. Of course the English Channel does not tip, but external forces created by the position of the moon and sun relative to the earth create the same effect, originating from the Atlantic Pulse which keeps the English Channel alternating between High and Low Water with the time of High Water at one end coinciding approximately with the time of Low Water at the other. This effect is called an oscillation and occurs twice daily. If the actual physical features conformed to this ideal pattern there would be no tidal rise or fall at mid-length, but though the tides at each end of the Channel do conform approximately to this pattern the friction, irregular depths and restrictions in width of the Channel between the Isle of Wight and the Cherbourg Peninsula result in a further four oscillations daily within an area bounded by Portland, Cherbourg, Littlehampton and Le Havre. Combined with the natural twice daily oscillations, this produces the 'Double High Water' curve as experienced in the Port of Southampton. In the shallower waters within the Isle of Wight and in the Port of Southampton up to thirty further oscillations of varying magnitude again vary the 'Double High Water' curve to produce the ultimate Southampton tidal curve embodying the local tidal features, namely, the short duration of the ebb tide, the 'young flood stand' and the pronounced fall between first and second High Water stands.

I'm from/live in Belfast in Northern Ireland.

It's beautiful. Fantastic. I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world.

Just has something about it that nowhere else I've been has. And I don't know what that something is. Just something I can't describe that I love.

Maybe it's the people; so friendly. Maybe it's the fact that no matter where you are in the city you can always see the countryside, the hills, mountains, and that you're never more than a 15 minute drive from the country. Maybe it's because it's right by the sea. Maybe it's the beautiful Victorian and Georgian architecture. Maybe it's the huge industrial heritage.

I don't know.

But I do know there's no nicer place to be on a fine summer's day than Belfast city centre. I wouldn't change it for the world.

I haven't lived in the same home for more than 3 & 1/2 years, so I don't have a "home town."

Currently I'm going to school in Riverside, California, and my parents live in Livermore, California. I was born in a hospital in Norfolk, VA, and lived in Virginia Beach for the first year of my life.

Course in about a year I will either end in up Virginia, Georgia, or Pennsylvania depending on what job I end up with.

Not much I can say other than my dad's ex-military so I moved around a lot as a kid, and even after he retired we still moved around because of DOD/DOE related work.
