Too bad you folks don't own guns. Imagine how much fun it would be to try to shoot them as you drive past.

They'll have to start setting up cameras to watch people vandalising the speed cameras. And cameras watching the new anti-vandalism cameras to stop people vandalising them. And more cameras watching them. And so on.

the great American pastime of shooting road signs, mailboxes, street lights, and now red light cameras and speed cameras...

Don't give them any more ideas. They're already talking about monitoring travel. I'm waiting for the vidscreens you can't shut off.

Oh, like the one on the train that goes from Heathrow to Paddington. The one with the "special" version of BBC.

Fucking motorists. When will they realise that speed cameras are there for a reason? You'll only get fined when you are wrecklessly putting someone else's life at risk - try and play the victim as much as you want but all that sympathy's going to sap away when you finally hit someone.

Yeah! What are they going to do if the king of England decides to start taxing their tea or quartering redcoats in their homes? Nothing, that's what. They don't have any blackpowder rifles to fight back.

There were so many TV screens I couldn't turn off, and so many CCTV cameras when I went to London, that I thought I was playing Half-Life 2.

Especially when the train from Heathrow pulled into Paddington. All that was missing was the guards with the face masks and cattle prods.

nyah we do not need guns, we have knives, its far more masculine to fight with a knife than a gun, gun's are for pussies and fags

btw i dont have a knife and i dont do knife fights ( well i do obviously have a knife, or else eating would be a bit less civilised)

Really? Firearms are harder to use effectively than you realize.

Trained police, in real-life situations, will miss with a majority of their shots at ranges as close as 2 meters.

Knives are also hard to effectively use - unless you're an expert and your opponent is holding still, you may end up stabbing them 20 or 30 times, and not get much more than a trip to the hospital out of it.

err... i think the saying you are refering to is "the sun never sets on the british empire". england and the flag have nothing to do with it. or this for that matter. and if you need guns to feel masculine i feel sorry for you :p

There is one on the A34 just south of Congleton, it has stood toasted for a year, and now tree growth is concealing the road from its view. :p

I like the way the newspapers moan about speed cameras being unnecersary, but the moment a foreigner causes an accident by going over the limit it's front page news.

Of course, seeing cameras filled with expanding builders foam is fun!

I hate people who exceed the speed limit, I hate being a passenger in any car driven by almost everyone I know, but I hate speed cameras more.

Why?

Because they are contrived.

They don't keep people under the speed limit. The 10-mile stretch of A34 near my house has a speed limit that shifts...

40mph --> 60mph --> 40mph --> 60mph --> 50mph...

...and even used to have a 30mph segment in there, sandwiched between 60mph and 50mph. And a pair of cameras at each boundary, and one or two in the middle of each segment.

Does anything about the road change to warrant this messing with the speed limit? Does it fuck. What it does, is create a situation where everyone is forced to perform emergency braking maneuvres every couple of miles, to avoid running into the back of someone who is new to the area and doesn't realise that behind the next hedge is a sign telling him to drop 20mph NOW or the cameras a hundred metres away will remove his license.

Those cameras have created a traffic hazard, where none existed. But I am sure they are profitable.
