TOKYO (Reuters) - More sex.

That's what one expert says is needed to solve Japan's baby
shortage.

"Japanese people simply aren't having sex," Dr. Kunio
Kitamura, director of the Japan Family Planning Association,
was quoted as saying by the Japan Times, an English language
daily.

An association survey of 936 people between the ages of 16
and 49 showed 31 percent had not had sex for more than a month
"for no particular reason" -- a condition known as "sexless."

"As much as subsidies and welfare programs are important,
sexlessness is also a critical issue in this problem."

Japan's fertility rate -- the average number of children a
woman bears in her lifetime -- fell to an all-time low of 1.25
last year. Demographers say a rate of 2.1 is needed to keep a
population from declining.

Japan came last among 41 nations in a poll last year by
condom manufacturer Durex, with lovers there having sex just 45
times a year compared to a global average of 103 times a year.

Kitamura said that while many men in workaholic Japan are
simply too "stressed out" from their jobs to have enough energy
for sex, many other couples simply do not have sex regularly.

In the association's survey, 44 percent of the people who
said they weren't having much sex felt that having a
relationship with the opposite sex was "very tiresome" or
"tiresome."

Kitamura's advice? Couples should talk to each other.

"Ultimately, it's these interactions with the opposite sex
that bring out the inevitable animal instinct in us -- to
reproduce," he said.

Well, sure. Sexlessness is a problem. But what are the reasons for it? Lack of communication, as someone suggested? Or is it simply that in a society with long hours of work no one has time or inclination to make babies?

I don't have much respect for people who complain about lowered birth rates in their country. (coughNNcough) More sex would seem to be in order. (Same goes for anyone who is complaining, in general.)

Be sincere. Insist that she's beautiful. Tell her how amazing she is in a different way every day. Do nice things for her that she doesn't expect. Write her a poem, give her flowers, take care of her when she's sick, and cheer her up when she's down. Give her a hug when she needs support, a kiss when she looks lovingly at you, and let her know that you're always there for her no matter what.

First off, I've got to wonder why they're looking for an increased population anyway. They've got a whole lot more people than should be found on a small island chain already.

Second, I find it wildly screwy for people to be called "sexless" if they've been out of the game for longer than a month. Maybe June's just a bad month for 44% of Japanese couples. Come on.

Rather old problem, actually. Japan's been worried about the sexless marriages for almost as long as I've been living here (15 years). And it's not just due to stress and overwork. There're lots of cultural issues at.

I don't think they want to increase the population, but stablize population. A shrinking population makes retirement benefits hard to procure not to mention their Japanese version of social security with so many less young people. Plus a shrinking population hurts the economy. Besides if this birth rate continues in Japan there will be only 1 person in Japan by the year 3300. Also this trend is not unique to Japan. All industrialized nations are shrinking in population and the trend is accelerating everywhere including Europe and America. The trend is also starting to spread to 3rd world nations. While their populations are still increasing, the fertility rate continues to drop lower and lower. A few places are still remaining strong such as Subharan Africa and Afghanistan.

Because when the population shrinks, so does your economy. And when it ages AS its shrinks, you start spending more and more on medical care and pensions per worker.

Second, I find it wildly screwy for people to be called "sexless" if they've been out of the game for longer than a month. Maybe June's just a bad month for 44% of Japanese couples. Come on.
It's more along the lines of no sex for a month with out a particular reason (distance or medical) and no foreseeable change to the situation.

Bingo. If you look at projected population pyramids (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/ipc/idbpyrs.pl?cty=JA&out=s&ymax=250), Japan's is set to invert...

Note that part of the study was done by a condom company. I can't say I'm an expert in the field, but I'd assume that our insistence upon safe sex to prevent disease (entirely justified, prevalent in richer nations, notably absent in Africa, and only recently-spread to other third-world countries) might have something to do with a decreased birth rate. Horny people are a lot more likely to have condoms (again, for the justified fear of disease) than not-horny people...and I'd assume further that horny people are more likely to be the ones having sex...

But again, I'm no expert.

I agree that safe sex is probably encouraging this trend, but I think the reasons behind it are far more complex. I think retirement benefits contribute to this because before the social security of people were their children especially for the poor. Second, a rising standard of living in the industrialized nations and certain 3rd world ones is also a negative factor. Third, a move away from the nuclear family with more people being single. There are probably many other reasons besides this, too. We can argue forever about whether or not the earth is overpopulated, but regardless its probably best for the inhabitants of the Earth if there are only mild shifts in population up or down opposed to gigantic shifts.

Not in the case of Japan. The problem is that something like 1/3 of all married couples don't have sex at all, for a variety of reasons: stress, lack of time, lack of interest, attitudes towards sex and marriage (Japanese married couples rarely sleep in the same bed, wives are often seen as a mother figure, and so on).

Add the expense of raising children here and the changes in social pattrerns (gender role reversal is getting talked about a lot these days), and a myriad of other factors that end up with women being unwilling to bear children.

The government is really going to have to get serious about promoting child leave for men AND women along with making it possible for women to come back to work after kids (and making it more attractive to have kids in the first place).

I think the number one problem though is changing the idea that child rearing is for women only and that a real Japanese man never helps out with such things.
