I'll start this thread now, but I won't be posting in it very much, if at all, while the match is on. We sooooooooooo need this one!

And feck all if my neighbours aren't home and will hear me screaming at the television. Meh, they heard probably the worst they'll ever hear outta me on Saturday when we played Italy.

(Unofficially, I know we're going to get killed at least 3-1 by Ghana. Bah! :P)

It does seem that way, which boggles my mind. Ghana's top two scoring threats are out with two yellows. What the feck are we defending against? Plus, we've yet to score a goal on our own. How're we gonna score when we're all hanging back on defense?

*thwap back* I didn't know that.....Anyway the USA should play something like a 4 4 2 or 4 3 3. Both plays give decent defence and a good offence.

I'd rather see the 4-4-2. That'd give McBride some help up front but still get better control of midfield.

Okay, the formation's been changed since the initial announcement. We're playing a 4-5-1. I'd still rather see a 4-4-2, which is what Ghana's playing.

Italy - Czech is ten times more interesting from an objetive point of view...

They aren't even broadcasting the US match in the local TV around here, we all are watching the italians, too many people of italian descent around here, too few...people from the United States.

I believe that we are starting in a 4-5-1 because we are missing two key defenders for the match. However, it is likely that sometime during the match (if we aren't scoring) we will switch to a 4-4-2.

We must score or obviously we are out, I didn't get the 5-4-1 atleast the 4-5-1 makes a bit more sense. Indeed their top scorers on Ghana had second yellows, due to our situation I'd likely go for a 4-4-2 and adjust it to a 4-5-1 if we score, and depending on the circumstances. If we try to imitate the Italian defence, I think we'll be sorry. We need to put the pressure on Ghana a bit too.

It's been my general observation that we tend to play about one good game out of every three total. And this gets us the odd win or draw necessary to qualify. Now, I don't understand the FIFA rankings at all, but that's beside the point. There's also this issue that we still have an inferiority complex, so that amking the WC is a victory sufficient to satisfy the players... that's my theory.

Why Soccer is retarded reason # 235

We are living in an age of communicating with Sattelites on MARS for christ sakes. Your going to tell me we cant find a way to update the TIME on a scoreboard 100 YARDS away so the fans ACTUALLY know how much time is ACTUALLY left in a half instead of sitting there with a thumb up your ass going...is it ending yet? No... Dempsey was in front of everyone, passed it forward to Beasley who was running full-speed... Beasley was in front of his defender, that's why you might have thought he was offsides. However, that does not matter because Dempsey was already ahead of the pack. In that situation, a team can never be offsides.

I am not bothered by who wins this game so my opinion is pretty unbiased.

Dempsey was behind Beasley when the ball was passed (this is clear on the replays) so no offside.

The penalty, however, was invented by the ref. Absolutely nothing there to give a free kick for.

Um, wrong in so many ways.

1. Beasley passed to Dempsey - not the other way around.

2. Dempsey was behind Beasley when the ball was passed.

3. The position of the passing player with respect to the opposition has no bearing on the offside rule. All that matters is the position of the receiving player when the ball is passed with respect to a) the passer, b) the opposition and c) the half way line. If he is behind any of these three it is not offside. If he is in front of al three it is off side.

To succeed the USA need to move to a more attacking formation. I hope they come out in the second half playing a 3 - 5 - 2 and attack Ghana on the wings. That way they have a chance. (Not much, but more than they have playing 5 - 4 - 1 or 4 - 4 - 2) They could always do what England did agains T&T and go mad and play a 2 - 4 - 4, but I dont see Bruce Arena going fr that.

Ghana played a normal game, there was nothing deserving of a red card. The ref was trying to make up for his mistake by giving every possible fre kick he could to the USA in the second half.

The only players I saw playing anything like dirty were the USA players in the last ten minutes - just desperation to get the ball back whenever Ghana had it.

My opinion:

The red on Mastroeni in the Italy game was the worst call I've seen in this World Cup so far. I don't agree with anybody who says that ref called a good game and to back it up: not only is it true that he tied a record for most reds in any of the World Cup final matches but also that he had been suspended from the World Cup for "irregularity" concerning his job against USA of all teams.

The red on Eddie I believe was justifiable, and yet when people complain I hear that as their complaint. Eddie played a dirty game against Italy, wheras Matroeni only had one foul and the other tackle, in which he even got the ball.

The free kick that set up Italy's goal, which noone talks about, was also bad, as it was a foul awarded as a free kick after Italy's nice scene where the guy took dive without being touched.

This game today, USA didn't play well enough to win but the PK was terrible.

And certainly, by contrast this ref was shaking too much to give a red after last time where the ref handed out reds like they were tickets for his concert.
Fire Sky

To EVEN further back my claims, look at the USA total red / yellows, exc Italy game and.... We had more cards in that than in the other 2 combined. So.... did the ref call bad game? Think its clear

Try 12 out of the 23 on the roster. That's 7 playing in England (1 for Man. U., 1 for Man. City but on loan to Everton, 1 for Leeds U., 2 for Fulham, and 2 for Reading), 4 in Germany (Hannover, 1860 Munich, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Standard Liège), and 1 in the Metherlands (PSV Eindhoven).

Ta for the stats. Knew of two in the premiership. I wouldn't take much notice of the lower leagues tho which is why I missed em. And there's just too much going on across all the european leagues for me to keep up with. Thought Keller would turn up somewhere tho. He is useful.

However....Tim Howard "Plays for" Man U on a technicality. He has played 6 matches. All but one of those have been in cup matches where Man U clearly did not give a toss and put out a B team. The only premiership match he has played in....was as a substitute. So it would be more accurate to say he plays for Man U reserves.

S'cuse me but there are as many Trinidad and Tobago players active in the premiership as there are US players. So americans are still a bit of a novelty and tend to stick out. I put the (?) after the two cos I had no idea other than the two at Fulham.

However, the point was that some of your countrymen appear to be surprised at how the game is played in terms of timewasting etc. From watching years of domestic, european and international matches I find nothing unusual about it. See the reference to Klinsmann earlier as a further example.

I think we should be talking about international experience at the top level instead

The US league is not exactly considered by the rest of the world to be....challenging. Take a look at the top qualifying teams. How many of them have players that play in the US? Now how many have players who play in or have played in the English Premiership.

I'm using the premiership as a comparison since its what I know, incidentally. There are more challenging leagues than the prem.

Players aspire to the Italian, Spanish and English leagues (16 of 23 in the argentine squad for example)

Premiership players are only attracted to the US league by huge salaries when they are about to retire

I hear people claiming the premiership is the best league in the world. Its not, but its not bad.

For the record, I don't think England have that great a team but at least they are used to playing against the best international players on a regular basis. If not domestically, then in European club tournaments.

Well, at least the US can join in the old football tradition of blaiming it all on the ref...

The red cards issued to the U.S. by Jorge Larrionda during the Italy-U.S. match were harsh and issued in error. The penalty kick given to Ghana was uncalled for. However, none of that makes a difference and doesn't rise to the level of "blaming it all on the ref" for the simply reason the U.S. didn't get the job done.

Even if the U.S. hadn't gotten the two reds in the Italy match, managing somehow to score AND if Ghana hadn't gotten the penalty kick and the game ended in a draw the U.S. still wouldn't have moved on, based on goal differential.

Therefore the calls made no difference.

You only get to complain about the refs if your team actually showed up to play and was robbed by the officiating. Our boys never showed up.
