Who Is The Greatest Association Football Player in the world today? And of all time?

Yon title pretty much says it all....

My humble opinion -

Todays greatest player = Steven Gerrard - put him anywhere on the pitch and he will perform - a great defender, the best defensive midfielder there is, one of the best wingers and central midfielders there is, the second best attacking midfielder in the world (to Frank Lampard, just), a highly competent striker. Never seen him play in goal... Add to that his ridiculously good record for club and country and the fact he is only 26 and just coming into his prime, "unbelievably good" as Alan Hansen qould say.

All Time greatest player = not sure, too many candidates. Was thinking Pele, Best, Gerrard again but never that cheating SOB Maradona (though his goal following his damn handball was incredible  )

Why? Because I went with Steven Gerrard? Ask Pele what he thinks - then tell me I'm being a rampant British Nationalist.

Or because I dislike a fat cheating Argentine?

I don't know about best player right now... But in 10 years I'd be willing to place a bet that Freddy Adu is going to be one hell of a football player.

Nah, it is the same fat cheating Argentinian I hate, so not for that...

It is...Gerrard as the ALL TIMES BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD?

And I also expected a better performance of the british team, they are quite sucking right now.

Fabregas
Messi
Cambiasso
Ballack
Deco
Ronaldinho
(Even Beckham for christ's sake!)

Any of those could dispute the claim of Gerrard, as it is difficult to decide.

Let's see England winning the WC, at least, then we can talk

Goalie: Lev Yashin
Defense: Franz Beckenbauer
Striker: Gerd Müller

Note that I don't know much about the history of football, that's why I named two Germans (although those two ultimately make most lists anyways).

Here is list of the Top 100: http://www.rediff.com/sports/2004/mar/05fifa.htm

With my limited knowledge, I'd say:

Current - don't know. Edit: maybe Thierry Henry?

Past - Johan Cruyff.

Past - Easy. George Best, hands down.

Current - Difficult. Possibly Ronaldhino, Gerrard or Henry. Give Rooney another 5 years even.

"The fans, they look only for forwards, always a forward," Pele told Sky Sports News. "Somebody who scores.

"Sometimes you have a player like Gerrard.

"For me, for the last five years Gerrard has been the best player in the world.

"He is a midfielder, he plays very good. People didn't mention Gerrard, now they mention Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Messi because they are forwards."

Now - Riquelme, Messi, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Henry...too many to list.

Past - Maradona.

Past 'keeper - Yashin
Past defender - Beckenbauer, Moore
Past midfielder - Garrincha
Past forward - Maradona

Brazil would have won the World Cup without Pele. Germany would have won it without Muller, and without Beckenbauer (though probably not without both). Argentina would not have won the World Cup without Maradona. He carried a team that would have struggled to make the semi finals all the way to the trophy. Yes, he may have cheated against England, and he may have become a drug addict, but surely people aren't going to let that blind them to his, frankly amazing, skill
