It's easy to tell the difference between Japan and China;

Run down the street naked, shouting like a lunatic and throwing pieces of ham everywhere. If they throw you in prison, you're in China. If they give you a game show, you're in Japan. :)

Or experience doing so in China and Japan?

Well unfortunately I've never been to China or Japan. I do, however, make it a point to study international silliness and I consider myself well versed on the cultural reactions to naked ham-flinging wackos.

Just for future reference, however, I should point out that including my home country I have been naked in publc in four different nations. The U.S.A., France, Italy and Spain. *nod*

Well, coming from a network of professionally trained journalists, who are supposed to correct each other and keep things on a solid information base, they sure are FUCK UPS.

Not surprising coming from the same organization that vehemently accepted a Microsoft Word document as a "real" document from the 1960s.

It's not a matter of not making mistakes.

It's a matter of admitting that they are making them, and are not the high and mighty, all-certified, qualified, worship-me-because-I'm-a-fucking-journalist who can't admit I have a political axe to grind so I'll fake the fucking news.

And this coming from a man who uses conservative blogs in his arguments.

It was a funny mistake, CBS corrected and issued a retraction just like they did with the Bush memo. Funny, but your 'news' sources don't offer the same. So get off your high fucking horse.

I mean I understand why there might be issues with caucasians in general; US caucasians don't represent the world of white people, but I can see why that might lead up to some issues with white people in general.

But I honestly don't understand why/how native americans (as in Pueblo and Inca relatives) or polynesians could give you a fit.

Maybe there is some historical occurrence with Japan that I am not aware of? Last I checked it was China that got carved up not Japan in the late 19th and early 20th century. But I guess I could be missing some other reason for national/racial animosity?

Depends upon by what you mean fond of. Do they open up for a flood ala the US, no. Have I been treated with respect since I came to Japan, yes.

And if Japan REALLY doesn't like us, pray tell why international marriages are fast gaining traction?

If you think I am alone you are sadly mistaken.

Let me see....Where did I say any of those things? I love Japanese culture and my homeland, I wish to protect it. But I also have a huge respect for other cultures as well, Chinese and Korean culture because what they have given us. I have always like the roman empire and Italy. Lovely country.

It's hard to say if Japanese people even want one or not, I do but america having troops in Japan isn't frowned upon for some reason. The figure was up 1.9 percent from a year ago and foreign nationals now account for 1.57 percent of the total population.Japan Times, May 26, 2006 on the number of registered residents in Japan.

Ah Wiki... Let's expand this a little to show off how much that snippit leaves out, m'k?

President Truman never directly asked for the removal of the Showa Emperor. Nor did he actually activly seak his removal from the throne, or the removal of the throne period. A number of Congressmen did, but the President instead made grumbling noises.

What he DID demand of SCAP was proof as to why the Emperor Showa should not face charges in the Tokyo Tribunal, proof that SCAP happily supplied (And ignored proof to the contrary). It provided the poltical screening President Truman needed to keep Congress from demanding the Emperor Showa dance at the end of a rope.

Indeed, later on President Truman was unhappy about the cost of the Showa Emperor's Japan tours, which SCAP got rid of as soon as President Truman demanded it. Now, if SCAP acted so damn fast about the tours, why do you think President Truman was gung ho about removing the Emperor, only to be blocked by his own general (and please remember that said president had no problem removing said general when he was unhappy with the Korean War. Having acknowledged the poor standard of geography in the US (with the title: Many Americans don't know where Iraq is, and a picture of the Suez Canal. *doh*), the media now seeks to educate Americans. By puting the wrong flag in the picture, they were hoping to get a number of corrections, allowing young Americans to learn the difference between China and Japan (To be fair: They thought it was a Korean flag; but at least they're trying, right?).

Yell at the Japanese government, they are the ones who have released the numbers and the survey. I still have not seen a poll that shows the majority of Japanese opposed to immigration.

And do you have proof of such feelings? Please post said proof.

And?
And obviously acceptance of international marriage and 外国人 is increasing. If more mixed couples are going to tie the knott, more and more immigrants are coming into Japan.

And more families are accepting the idea of an American or a Brazilian, or a Chinese as a son or daughter in law.

They have ever right to think however they want. They need to tone down a bit and the Japanese will listen, but they don't need to change their views to humor you.

And so you go back? How nice for you. I go home each year too and find out that the US has changed quite a bit in the time I was away. My fiancee has been out of Japan for 5 years states the very same thing. Everytime she returns to Japan, she is amazed at what has changed.

I get angry when people call me a colombian, for example. One bright guy in Miami once thought it was a good idea to call me "cuban mamita", just because I was talking in spanish. I still wonder what pissed me more, if the cuban or the mamita.

Next time I'll see an american I'll say "Hi, german", I'm sure he will loooove it.

Being proud about your nationality and culture is not wrong at all. You americans for sure know a lot of that. See how you are reacting just because someone actually told you that she thinks her country is better than yours!

ANATHEMA!well, actually, if you said "Hi German", you could be correct. American is not our ethnicity. That is what we are talking about. And I would react the same way to a german getting pissed about being called french. Its stupid. thats all there is to it. So the person made a mistake and called you the wrong ethnicity. Correct them. Don't friggin slap them.
And in Miami, it is fairly safe to assume those who speak spanish are cuban...considering most of the population is cuban

Yell at the Japanese government, they are the ones who have released the numbers and the survey. I still have not seen a poll that shows the majority of Japanese opposed to immigration.

if the governement did why are they still being accused of altering numbers?

And do you have proof of such feelings? Please post said proof.

What? You want me to go back in time and record my visit?

And obviously acceptance of international marriage and 外国人 is increasing. If more mixed couples are going to tie the knott, more and more immigrants are coming into Japan.

And more families are accepting the idea of an American or a Brazilian, or a Chinese as a son or daughter in law.

You are going overboard, Immigration is still very low and 1 in 22 or 1 or 21 or whatever is still low. 4.5 to 4.7%

Did I state that they need to change their view points to suit ME? I was talking about how their view points are extream to the majority of the Japanese (and probably causes deafness).

You said they should change their views. if they tone down the Japanese people will listen. Few want another Tojo.

What part of the majority of the Japanese people are not interested in nationalism and it's traditional talking points right now are you not understanding?

What does that have to do with what I said?

Because traditionally Japanese who leave Japan have a hard time reajusting to life in Japan.

And so you go back? How nice for you. I go home each year too and find out that the US has changed quite a bit in the time I was away. My fiancee has been out of Japan for 5 years states the very same thing. Everytime she returns to Japan, she is amazed at what has changed.

Again you are wrong, The last time I was in Japan it hadn't changed that much.

But they had no way to transport them. So far from what I have seen of your WWII knowledge, you have a very roisy colored view of it.

Yeesh. It was possible if they had the ability to.

The problem is in the assuming.

For example, I am not assuming that you as an United Stater, a land filled with thousands of idiots, are an idiot. That would be just a mistake and a unforgivable generalization, letting myself fall into stereotypes.

Assuming that someone speaking in spanish in Miami is cuban because he/she is cuban is kinda silly, and only shows how closeminded are you, not remembering that a huge load of other countries speak spanish and that Miami CAN be a tourism spot.

Like assuming blacks are criminals, or asian are smart, and the like.

I'm not into the slap, really, I do not think violence solves anything, and I also thnk that true ladies do not raise their hands to smite those who offend them, as hand fighting is reserved for peasants. And german is not an ethnicity, it is a nationality, like United Stater, and unlike american.

Without getting into the whole United Stater vs. American debate, German is considered an ethnicity, as is English, Welsh, French, Spanish, etc. They are both nationality and ethnicity. German, iirc, would be decended from the Goths and a few other groups. American, or USer, or whatever the fuck we're calling it today, is only a nationality.

90% of the people that speak english around here are americans. Perhaps more. And yet it is polite to ask "where are you from". I had ran into two aussies, a handful of british and a south african that way. They wouldn't liked that I called them "americans", as maybe you wouldn't like to be called an australian in Japan, perhaps?

German is a nationality, not an ethnicity. Nor english, French or Spanish are, at far as I know. Watch the french soccer team, for instance, yeah, they sure are an ethnicity, no?

Spain have like four or five different ethnicities, taking a most extensive example. And none of them are named "spanish"!, thus spanish is a nationality, not an ethnicity.

N refers to a population. The idea being that you chose you N to reflect the population you wish to study. An N of 20 college students from one college only reflects upon that college and is not applicable to college students nation wide. So to say that from a meeting in one area of Japan you were able to achive a N that relates to the whole of the Japanese people is more than a little far fetched.

Another example of the US-centrism that annoys the world.

Your comment is another example of superiority that annoys Americans.

It's FAKE. A poorly Photoshopped screenshot. If CBS News truly did that, you wouldn't be finding out about it on a NationStates forum.

As an aside, if your country was huge, had a strong pop culture and media presence of its own, and was arguably the strongest military power in the world, you'd be ethnocentric too.

I live in Florida, and it takes about the same time to fly to San Francisco (7-8 hours) as it does to fly to London (7-8 hours). And in San Francisco, I'm still about 1000 miles from the nearest international border. And in San Francisco, although the politics and culture are different in some obvious ways, it's still the U.S.; I don't have to adjust to another language or other food (unless I specifically make an effort to do so) or even drastically different laws. It's not like it is in Europe, where you could drive from Paris to Madrid for the weekend and experience a completely different culture.

So stop piling on Americans as ethno-centric... we're just living our lives, and as a whole, don't have to deal with other cultures unless we make a specific -- and very expensive -- effort to do so. Just deal!

I stand by my comment. Japan could have taken Hawaii if it wanted to. But pearl harbor wasn't about invading the area.

While I know the main intention was to destroy the US Fleet, and especially the carriers, I thought - and maybe I should check my sources - that there was at least some plan to start an uprising among the Japanese-Americans living in Hawaii, coinciding with or right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. I guess such an idea could just have been made to cause trouble, but it seems like if it succeeded it would be a natural precursor to occupation.

But speaking hypothetically for a minute, I don't believe that Japan could have taken Hawaii, even if it had wanted to (which is probably why they didn't try. It would have been a far more devestating blow to lose that base and staging area in the first attack than to lose most of the fleet - even if the Japanese had caught a carrier or two as well). First off, there's the logistical difficulty: even getting the Japanese carriers within striking distance required a fairly large fleet, and several tankers. If you added an invasion force to that, with the requisite number of extra destroyers, takers, and a battleship or a couple cruisers, even with the sloppiness of American air patrols I don't see how it could have gone undetected. And with detection, the entire operation would have had only the most limited success - probably about half of what it did accomplish, although I don't remember the strength of the Hawaii garrison - and the invasion wouldn't have come off. After the war started, there would have been no way to bring off the operation secretly. By the day after the attack - maybe two days - air patrols were out, and thorough. Which is one of the reasons Yamamoto determined that Midway needed to be taken first.

For Japan to have managed a sneak attack and invasion, assuming all of Japan's other operations were also carried out per historical record, would imply a Japanese fleet large enough for American surrender (or, possibly, immediate increase in research/development of long-range planes, an interesting hypothetical) to be the only plausible option - any new American fleet would have been picked apart as it was made. The Japanese fleet was impressive even as it was, but it had a lot of territory to cover after the conquests in 1941. The Midway fleet was about the largest force the Japanese could plausibly - safely - assemble after that while keeping an eye out on the conquered territory (the fleet that made the diversionary attack towards the Aelutians might be justified, but probably left some of the defensive line of the Japanese fleet weakened, if the Allies had known where to strike). By the time of, say, the battle of Leyte Gulf, the Japanese fleet assembled may have been bigger, but it had less territory to concentrate on.

Anyway, that's all extremely hyptothetical, not to mention a bit of a shallow analysis of the history, but I disagree with your assertion.

Not "United Stateser", but "United Stater" would be a better translation for "Estadounidense", which is the most widely used and correct word in South America. I still have to see the phrase "El presidente americano George W Bush", because that would mean he's the President of America.

I rarely hear/see Bush called "President of America" either. Almost always "The President of the United States" or (since I live in the US) just "the President". But we call ourselves Americans because... well, we are, for one thing. We don't say you aren't (assuming you live in the Americas), but a lot of us still only have a vague idea of this whole United States thing. Sure, we're patriotic, we know what our country is, but we tend to identify ourselves - and especially other Americans - first by region.

Weird but true. At least around here, in Michigan, Canadians, Californians, and New Yorkers are all about equally weird, except that Canadians say "eh", New Yorkers can't drive, and Californians are a bunch of hippies. ;) Regardless of the facts of the matter, people I know in the US tend to think of themselves as part of "America", an attitude that goes back at least to Monroe.

Of course, the weakness of this is that we then recursively start identifying "America" as the US, the whole US, and nothing but the US, but that's just human stupidity, not the root of the name. When have we ever been anything but "Americans", except formally? That's what other people call us. All the foreign exchange students I've known have started out, when I first knew them, calling us Americans.

Maybe it's geographically inaccurate, but the name's more or less a fait accompli right now, and as long as everyone knows what you mean, why bother about it? Or is that too much of a "USian" attitude to deal with?

Bunny: Holy shit, you see that fucking head come apart, man? Shit, I've never seen brains like that before, man.

Just deal!
Ah... no. It was quite real. And quite funny.
I also beg to differ...
http://www.google.com/search?q=cbs+japan+china+flag+moon&btnG=Search
Googling it doesn't find anything. A mistake like that would have prompted much grandstanding from rival media outlets, not to mention the Chinese government.
I beg to differ myself, considering I am the one who took the screen shot. But don't believe me, believe CBS.

Let me break it down for you guys. When someone has to deal with Racism from another group, like an asian getting racism from whites they develop problems with that group. A lot of Blacks still have problems with whites as do Mexicans. Now when that person states the racism they have gotten to members of that group, like I did here and all that happens is that group calls that person a racist...Guess what happens? It come across as if you are ok with that Racism the person recieved and it is acceptable, therefore making that person develop a bigger problem. Whatever happened to denouncing that racism and make it clear that you don't condone it? I haven't gotten that here today.

Or perhaps they have a problem with racism of all types regardless of whether or not you make excuses. People are talking about YOUR racism because you're here. Bring the people who you are talking here and they'll get the same response. Their racism is not an excuse for yours. Someone has to stop it. You are as guilty as the people you complain about. Racism - 2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

Hatred is not a requirement for racism. You prejudge people based on race. In the case of white people, you have a general problem with them becuase of what some individual people have done. Would I be justified in having a problem with Japanese people after encountering you?

That's exactly what you're asking people to do. However, the reason you're not hearing about the people who did it to you as often is because they aren't in this thread. You are. Saying you have a limited vocabulary when you don't know the definition of racism is not a flame. It's an observation.

Who is talking about slurs? Slurs can be racist, yes, but they are not the only thing that is racist. You are clearly being racist. You have a problem with white people because some individual white people mistreated you. If you don't realize that's racist then you HAVE a limited vocabulary.

Not realizing that your irrational behavior towards all white people based on the actions of a few is racism is because you don't realize the meaning of the term... That's caused by a limited vocabulary.

Edit: By the way, there are levels of racism. While you're brand might be mild, but it's still dangerous. People should be discouraged from mistreating people or judging people based on the color of their skin EVERY time they do it.
