Got a horrible crick in my back from putting up the ramp today at work (10x10 steel ramp used to drive mowers on and off the boxtruck). Is there ANYTHING that will take the edge off it? ANYTHING? I don't care if it's redneck accupuncture, I will try it.

Or, if thats not possible, just an OTC painkiller. Personally, I just use the generic ibuprofen. Just don't overdose yourself. Please.

I hate taking drugs, with the exception of alergy meds. I wouldn't last long without them-I work landscaping and I don't mix too well with grass. Other than allergy meds, I don't take drugs of any kind...

But for this I will give ibuprofen a shot.

How can you OD on the stuff? Eitherway, Amy would kill me if I did.

If you take a ridiculous amount, it can cause liver damage.

Anyway, I think your pain is coming from a misalignment of the spine caused by habitual knee-jerking.

(scampers away, giggling.)

Alleve Naproxin is pretty good OTC pain relief.

If its muscular DMSO horse liniment is good if you have EXTREMELY clean hands.

Chiropractors work wonders.

Lift with your legs in the future or your back will feel like this for half your life. Dont lift stuff thats too heavy or you might someday find your balls hanging down at sock level.

it fucks with your liver. very painful death. you die from liver failure long before you have enough painkillingness in you to knock you out.

IB proufen always does me wonders, you might not be able to find it under that name, but its just generic non-asprin pain killer anyway.

Failing that, the only thing left is the industrial strength stuff, codeine and what not.

you can take up to 4 otc painkillers every 4 hours in general (note: CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR. I DO NOT KNOW YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY, NOR AM I A DOCTOR). That is what I take for my knee, under the reccomendation of my father, who is a dr...generally motrin or ibuprofen, because they are anti-inflamitory.

Icyhot might help, or a heatpad, or hot shower/bath. Rest is the best thing for it...not too much stress for the next few days...lie down for a while...just take it easy in general/

I want to second that comment!

My kid screwed up my back when she tried to launch off me using her feet on my chest. It was either drop her or take the damage.

I tried to "man" it out with painkillers and then she did it again.

I didn't belive in them but at that point I was in sooo much pain, I gave it a try.

I went in walking like an 80 year old man and left with a normal walk.

My lower back is much stronger then is used to be. I am working on my middle and then I am done!

Isn't that with drinking involved?

4 every 4 hours is possible, but safe practice is more like four every 8.
Personally, I never need more than 2 or 3 every 6 hours and that very rarely.

it is important to note that chiropractors aren't doctors. Much like a massage therapist or accupuncturist, their methods work WITH medical attention, not as a replacement. They can help, and sometimes cure a problem pretty well...but sometimes a trip to the doctor is needed.

here is the deal with most OTC painkillers...

acetaminophen, sold under the brand name Tylenol and Nyquil, is very damaging to the liver. Ibuprofen, sold under the brand name IBProfen, is harsh on the stomach. Same applies for asprin, but asprin also thins your blood. These effects are magnified when mixed with alcohol, but exist at all times.

Never mix OTCs with alcohol. Take the reccomended dosage unless otherwise instructed. I have personally been instructed to take 4 every 4 hours by my doctor. This is considered a very high dosage, but is safe assuming you are in otherwise good health.

Ibuprofen, sold under the brand name IBProfen, is harsh on the stomach.

It should be noted, though, that in doses over 80-100 mg/kg of Ibuprofen one risks symptoms of intoxication. So, it can be said that over 8 g will lead to moderate intoxication, and over 20 g to very severe intoxication in an adult. Symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting (sometimes bloody), headache, tinnitus, lethargy, loss of consciousness, seizures, nystagmus, metabolic acidosis, hypernatremia, renal failure, hematuria, hypothermia, and in some cases ARDS.

A close friend of mine is slowly losing her life to liver cancer. Sad sad sad man :( .

Peech, you rock. A LONG HAWT shower made things feel so much better. Tommorow I'll have two of the high school kids take care of the ramp, I'm too old to do that sort of heavy lifting.

;)

Thanks all. I hope tommorow it will be better. Hot shower was probably a temporary fix, but oh does it feel GOOD!

Ahh but you have to question the Doctor as well.

When my back was fragged the doc said take some drugs and lay in bed.

The US docs seem to push pills all the time these days. Even when you say you don't want them.

I have to keep telling them I am not after the quick fix. I want to do it right.

I get strange looks. ;)

depends on the doctor...the ones that work with my father suggest the best treatment they can. This isn't always the best treatment, but often the best that insurance will cover.

For example, lets say the doctor things you have X. Test A is 80% accurate, but cheap. Test B is 95% accurate, but expensive. To get the best answer, test A and B should be given. At the very least, if one is chosen, it should be test B. The insurance company says "they get test A or they pay out of pocket". Well, there is the doctors reccomendation, made by an MBA in Hartford, CT.

Also, sometimes the pills are the best solution, not just the fast one.

the problem is not inherent in these non-medical practicioners...My mother is a massage therapist as well as an RN. The problem are the ones who claim they can replace medicine.

Oh I am not suggesting it's a replacement. A reputible chiropracter will work with the doctor. Mine sends his reports to him all the time.

Just as it shouldn't be a replacement, it shouldn't be discounted as well.

Before I started going I was prone to migraines. Since I have been going they have been greatly reduced. A couple docs said all I needed was migraine meds.

I have them because I still get them but I don't take them as much......

definatly shouldn't be discounted...I just tend to say to go the medical route first, and then seek the suppliments...that way you will have a better chance of finding several methods that work well for you

Sometimes the "earthy" type stores have it.

I've found it at whole foods...sadly that is a bit of a hike for me, so I only go when I really need it, not when I just want to get revenge.

However, there is a walgreens opening down the street from me...maybe they'll stock it. CVS and Brooks don't :(

Maybe they'll have some in Boston when I move back up there. My plan is to put it on the soap bar. My roommates will love me so :)

First get a turkey baster, and liquefy some fine shredded turkey with some rhubarb and a small amount of Rose 151. Make sure its smooth, but not TOO smooth. Add a small amount of club soda for effervescence, and a light sprinkling of vanilla and very finely ground coffee. Mix again.
Warm it up a smidge, and take three LONG draws from the tonic with the baster.
The next step, you should ask Sarkhaan to explain. I recommend a good leather strap to chew on and some yoga experience. I believe that MXC has a segment called "Log Drop" where they have names for a few of the positions that are applicable here.
After application, AGAIN yoga positions would work well. I recommend giving yourself a half-nelson (same one Rosanne Barr used on that episode where she was trying to get pregnant).
As is - that particular position also alleviates somewhat the pain incurred by kidney stones.

Repeat as necessary/desired.

If you want a little memento of the experience, get a large blank canvas and position yourself over/on it, and be prepared to laminate the results.

...did you say "back pain"?
