ENGLAND: Where/how can I get involved in various CAMPAIGNS?

UK...UK...ENGLAND...UK...UK

As anyone who really knows me knows, sexual assault, child abuse (sexual or not), and rape really anger me.

I will run for Prime Minister at the next election, but before then, does anyone know where/how I can get involved with campaigns to change laws relating to the following issues (I know there are places that deal with such issues, but I'm talking about specific campaigns)?

Rape

Paedophilia

Non-sexual child abuse

Homelessness

The fact that nurses can't throw people out of hospital unless they become violent (they have to put up with verbal abuse)

I mean like the laws that allow child abusers to be given stupidly short sentences.

Are you a member of a political party? Because otherwise I think it might be hard for you to run for PM....

Know what's cool? I got to talk to the Prime Minister of Canada (before he became the Prime Minister) personally about those subjects.

Seriously though, the National Association for People Abused in Childhood is one that's prominent in the news at the mo, I think. As for the others, google is your friend, although I want to know what you want to do about the homeless - I'm assuming you want to give them housing and not just cleanse the streets...

Alternatively you could just read the tabloid press and base your views of the world on their editorials, not letting the facts get in the way of a good rant.

Protest votes like that wouldn't be necessary if the politicians would get their heads out of their arses and actually listen to the people for a change.

I find that local politicians can and do listen to their people - at least, those in their immediate area. It seems to be the higher up people that ignore us.

I have more the impression that locals do listen but immediatly forget about it once their back in their offices. Unless you live in a small village. And yes about the higher politicians.

Back to the OP... it depends what you mean by change. And running for MP at the head of the winning party, which would make you PM, seems a tad unrealistic for one person. Shelter and the RSPCC would indeed be the better places to go if you really want to improve lives.

Oh: and depending on your age and walk of life, you might consider going into social work full time.

Try becoming MP before you think about becoming PM.

Try learning something about our constitution. You cannot "run for Prime Minister." The Prime Minister is the leader of the largest parliamentary party.

No, not quite. The Prime Minister is appointed by the sovereign on the basis of being the best able to have support from the members of the house. This is not the same as merely being the leader of the largest party.

Theoretically we could imagine an election where some extremist party hated by all other members gained 40% of seats, whereas two other major parties each gained 30%, and in such a case the sovereign would be within their rights to amount a PM from one of the parties only holding 30%, if it was a case that the appointment of a PM from the 40% party would cause such ill-feeling and lack of desire to co-operate in other MPs that the house would grind to a halt.
