NS General throwing pop ups?

Is this happening to anyone else? It only happens when I hit links on this site. It never happens anywhere else. I have Adaware, anti-virus and I'm sitting behind a $50,000.00 firewall...

I get no popups from NS general. Maybe you've got some kind of adware that's sending you popups.

Hehehe... nope. Are you running IE?

It's most likely Jolt itself, or possibly some spies making pop-ups which run .exes in which they can look at your entire computer and its files or somesuch.

i get a lot of pop ups on here at work, but the IE is way out of date, and their adware protection is shite, i have no problems at home though.

Yes, but I'm fanatical about updates. I have Adaware and Spy Doctor installed, I have Innoculant... I even restored to a previous system from before it started happening and it won't stop. It was only today that I realized it only happens when I'm active here. If I leave here for an hour nothing will happen. If I do that and then come back and post it will happen.

I get them too when I'm not on my company network. From Intellion. They are very frequent. I think it's a Jolt thing, but I could be wrong.

Four. Perhaps we should see if we're all seeing the same sites in the popups.

It has been an increasingly troublesome problem for IE users. Your best bet is to add your name to the thread in Technical, maybe then moderation will believe us instead of saying "you just have a personal adware problem". For me, the window will disengage from my mouse- so I will have to click on the page to reselect the window for my mouse input, and when I do, the pop-up opens. It is really annoying because they somehow get around pop-up blockers. It doesn't seem to be an issue until you have been on the jolt site for say, 20 minutes or so.

edit: the thread in technical that delt with it is no longer there- maybe they have decided to do something about it

That is exactly how it happens to me. I'll try to hit submit on a post and it will disengage and a little tiny popup appears in teh upper left and then turns into an Intellion ad usually. Sometimes it hangs and if I try to kill the process it closes the NS general window, too.

no, but i have noticed the ads are no longer just for jolt services or game reviews...

one especially annoying one for some myspace style thing. really pisses me off, that one, and takes ages to load
so bad i'm considering migrating to firefox and adblock just to get rid of it

I'm using Netscape, though.

Start a poll with different browser options. That way we can tell if it really is IE that's to blame.

Intellion is the most frequent, but sometimes I get Pacific Poker too. And few others. I am sure it is IE adware imbedded in one of the new ad's that jolt has- when you are on the site long enough and that ad comes up, it imbeds into your temporary internet files- thereafter popping up repeatedly the rest of your online session.

Okay. I'll try to pay attention to the banner they run to see if I can figure out which one.

I just got an inteliton ad while the GTA ad was in the banner and Planetarion came up after. I don't think it's related to the ads because I have seen those two up a million times and nothing ever happened before.

Same for me... Is there ANY way to stop this? It even gets around my pop-up blocker.

Also, If I click on something, (usually a link) I get a rapid staccato of the link activate sound. Its like a barrage of clicking noises.

And there is no question NS General is doing this. I have five windows open as I always do and I only get popups when I click a link here. I'm going to report this. This is lame.

Ditto.

AFAIK, in the past most of these problems have been determined to be due to IE. From the replies here, it still seems to be the case.

Using Firefox and ZoneAlarm. No pop-ups whatsoever. I'd recommend running a spyware scan on your computer. If your current program doesn't detect anything, try Spybot - Search & Destroy.

I had problems on SBC Yahoo's browser last night, and it got worse for a while before stopping. Now, I'm using Firefox on my laptop so there are no problems; I haven't even had a notice at the top about popups being blocked.

All the mods say is "you r teh stoopid" if you have IE. Sorry for not having money for five browsers, all I got is the most used one in the world. It was never a problem until now.

 Yes, I'm sure I have talked about people's level of intelligence for using IE.

I use Firefox (free!) ZoneAlarm (free!), Spybot Search and Destroy (free!) Spyware Blaster (free!) AdAware (free!) and CounterSpy (not free).

I get zero pop-ups.

I have every kind of virus, spyware, popup blocker protection thingy you can think of and I still get pop ups here. It only started happening recently. Say 30 days or less. It's never happened before and it's not like I just joined or anything. So I dunno guys. The internet is a strange place.

I wasn't speaking of you, but of certain other moderators who have expressed a certain disdian for IE and people who refuse to abandon it, even though in certain work/school settings people are unable to use anything else. Nor are they able to add/download software at will. I am stuck with XP, IE, and McAfee, and that's it, for this be a work owned computer.

You're not the first person to ask this question - man, way to make feel out of the loop. But yeah, it is. I never knew so few people were using it anymore.
Over the years, I've had Mozilla and Opera, but something always didn't work out so great.
A year ago or so I thought about getting Firefox, but I read about too many bugs and didn't. They're probably long fixed by now but I'm too lazy to make the change. Plus, I get awfully used to the looks and layout of my browser, so I don't do change very well.

But yeah, Netscape has some annyoing ticks, too (at least on my laptop it has), so I dunno.

But I only keep IE around for the handful of pages/video links/login-thingies that just won't work with Netscape.

My Firefox at work tells me it's blocked popups occasionally but I don't get them at home (also FF).

The new Netscape sucks. The old ones are much better. Not user friendly at all and no better protection that I've seen than IE.

don't know if you started a new thread or not on this but...

i started experiencing this last week. Didn't know if it was other websites or not, but i found that it only happens when i'm browsing this forum.

I ran ad-aware, ccleaner, and easy cleaner(by toniarts) and it seems to have taken care of the problem.

i also liked it how the mods were condescending and closed the moderation thread started.

I've got an idea. How about not letting your site throw pop-ups? They are coming from here. I use IE because the web-based FTPs I need to use for my job don't work on other browsers. Also, as someone said, it is the most widely used browser in the world. It's really not hard to not throw popups at your users. All you have to do is not do it.

The dismissiveness of certain other mods isn't Katganistan's fault. But I agree with you that I would appreciate the NS mods bringing it to the attention of our Jolt overlords that they need to screen their new ads for imbedded adware, rather then dismissing our complaints with prejudice.
