Wait a second. What happened to the conspiracy of coverup, the orders from Cheney to massacre civilians with impunity...
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Three members of the 101st Airborne Division have been charged in connection with the deaths of three detainees during an operation near in southern Salaheddin Province, Iraq, on May 9, the U.S. military announced Monday.
A military news release said the charges in the case include murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, communicating a threat, and obstructing justice.
The release said the unit commander ordered an investigation on the day the alleged murders occurred, and the Army's Criminal Investigative Division is continuing the probe.
The soldiers charged in the case are in pretrial confinement, the release said, while it is determined if enough evidence exists to proceed with courts-martial.

No, it sounds like a court martial to me.

the US military clearly can act promptly. so why in the scores of other cases are they dragging their heels?

Obviously, we have a unit commander that wants a promotion. He must think that this will secure it.
Or, possibly he was originally a supply or disbursing officer and doesn't understand troop handling.

No, he's doing his job properly, he probably wants to go home.

Due process. availability of forensic evidence .Conflicting accounts of events ...etc.
If they are dragging any heels its to be sure they dont end up in their mouth by making stupid mistakes in a rush to judgement.
You just lifted up your dress and showed your leftist , guilty until proven innocent adgenda .
did i? did i really?
i just think its interesting that they can take 9 months, they can take 9 hours.
the optics and politics of who and how they prosecute for murder is more important than protecting innocent iraqi's?

Can you give an example of people charging Cheney et al with the above conspiracy? Because I don't remember anyone throwing that one around. Now, I could have missed it, but certainly something that inflammatory ought to be easy to dig up...
I'll wait.

I expect no less from the military. This is as basic as it gets.
But it is good to see that the unit commander is doing his duty.

The other thing to consider is that this is pre-trial confinement, based on a charge by a commanding officer. There has been no investigation to cause this to be brought to trial. That is forthcoming. Even in the UCMJ, there is the basic presumption of innocence. But not on General, no sir. An accusation is as good as a verdict.

its how the US military decide to do justice and the right cant just start whining haebus corpus when it suits them

Ummm... if you do your job properly, you get to stay much longer, especially if you're an officer.

I've got this feeling, just an unfounded suspicion, that this was an order from higher headquarters. Something like -- "We need to look better in the press on this civilian murder thing. Bring me a case to try." Or, "Captain, I need three scapegoats. Now!"
I am kind of surpised that the Marine Corps isn't the service that is rushing to prosecute. They usually eat their young like no one else.
