al-Q Claims to Kidnap US Soldiers, Russian diplomats

An umbrella group linked to al-Qaida in Iraq claimed Monday that it had kidnapped two American soldiers reported missing south of Baghdad, where 8,000 Iraqi and U.S. troops were conducting a massive search.

The group, called the Mujahedeen Shura Council, also claimed it had kidnapped four Russian diplomats and killed a fifth in Baghdad on June 3.

I understand the US soldiers part - but why kidnap Russian diplomats? Want to force the Russians to give you money and arms? I don't see the Russians as part of the "coalition" nor do I see them as involved in Iraq in any major way.

Russia's problems with Chechnya (sp?) may be the motivating factor. Just a show of support for their Muslim brothers who murdered all those children at that school last year.

Now they're involving the Russians even though they haven't done anything? This could only lead to another country entering the war if the diplomats aren't released. World War 3 anyone?

I hope if they really did get two US soldiers, we are able to get them back, intact and unharmed, really quickly.

I can only see them grabbing Russians as an attempt to turn the Russians against us.

World War 3

i can see a massive war being underway in the up comming decades if not years. but i do not believe it will be called world war 3, that is if it has a name at all.

i think people will try and prevent calling another "world war"

Welcome young n00b. The points you made were excellent

Anyway this could prove to be a fatal mistake on Al-Qaedas part.

Because the Muhajadeen were the group that fought the Soviets in their war in Afghanistan, so they've got a bit of a grudge.

And they've got the US soldiers because the Muhajadeen are now really the Taliban.

Wow.

Anyway, I was reading the Wiki article on the Brelan Massacre, and it says that Russia believes that Al Qaeda was involved in at least the financial stage. I think it's safe to say that Russia is more than a bit pissed off at Al Qaeda already, and if Al Qaeda is involved in Chechnya, they probably see snagging Russian diplomats in Iraq as just a chance to get at Russians wherever they can. Something like the embassy bombings in Africa several years back or the USS Cole attack.

Getting Russia more involved only benefits Al Qaeda.

It wouldn't work without a subtitle. I'm thinking:

You can torture someone just as easily in some hut as you can in cuba or abu ghraib.

No reason to saw off a head when they can follow our example.

Umm - hate to break it to you, but these people don't take prisoners (military ones) and let them live - Guantanamo notwithstanding.

The Americans in i-rawk WILL find their comrades and the guys who captured them. Although it remains to be seen whether it will be alive-I'd have to assume they are as good as dead.

Another point, WHY on earth did they surrender? You already know what they will do to you. Pull a grenade out and take some with you....

The russians have been at chechnya for years, ever since the breakup of the USSR. Alqaeda's been involved for a while.

On a side note, I hope russia beheads everyone of the chechen terrorists. Beslan, the two russian airliners...bad stuff.

Lyube man! Those guys rock!

Looks like thats what they did this time. A video will probably surface soon.

Hopefully, by that time, the one responsible for the torture and mutilation of these two soldiers will have received their justice.
