Anti-Dutch sentiment has reached a new low as Dutch fans wearing orange trousers with a lions tail were told to take them off before they could watch the recent match against the Ivory Coast because they had the logo of a brewery other then Budweiser (the official Sponsor of the World Cup) on them.

This seems pretty absurd to me, but I suppose it makes good business sense to someone.

So is FIFA just acting as axman for the greedy special interests that now control the game?
Or is this Anti-Dutch?
Or just standard operatind precedure?

You decide.

You decide. No, FIFA is obviously anti-Coalition of the Willing. They'd never do anything like this to anyone who isn't fighting in Iraq...

Yeah. It's actually masked anti-Americanism.

It´s about sponsorship deals. The deal with Budweiser probably runs along the lines of:-

"Show no graven images of other alcoholic beverages, smiteth the blasphemer with the rod of debagging, raketh in the groats, and watereth not the beer, for indeed it needeth it not".

Yeah. It's actually masked anti-Americanism.Maybe FIFA is anticipating that the US won't make it to the next round, and they have to pick new targets for their evil anti-American agenda. How dare they use capitalism against us?!

How did a complaint by a dutch fan translate into anti americanism??

Or is this Anti-Dutch?
This was on the Dutch news broadcasts some two weeks ago. I haven't heard any response here (Netherlands) saying it's anti-Dutch. It's a sponsorship thing. People could get a 'leeuwenhose' (or 'lionhose', a lederhose with a lion's tail) with a case of Bavaria beer. I think banning it is s widely considered childish commercialism. They're missing the point, it's supposed to be a joke.

There's been more like this. Couple of months ago there was a discussion about orange nazi helmets (http://www.helmpje.nl/) being banned for bad taste. Which they are, obviously. Think we'll have to leave our German hosts to be the judge of that, though.

FIFA attacks Dutch fans. The Netherlands are in the coalition of the willing, ie supoorting the US. Therefore this is a veilled attack on US.

Obvious really ;)

I need more sleep. This thread is playing on a similar thread based on an article on Strategypage that bitched on about how anti-American FIFA was for not giving the broadcasting rights of the World Cup to the Armed Forces Network (AFN) so that US servicemen and women in Iraq or elsewhere could watch it.

i like the dutch :)

But they are evil I tell you. They go wearing orange lederhosen, with tails on them.

(Though that of course pales in comparison to their real crime, daring to challenge their corporate betters)

There were also allegations yesterday that England supporters at last Thursday's Trinidad and Tobago match were forced to hand over Nike clothing at the entrance of the stadium in Nuremberg, because Adidas - the German sportswear giant and Nike's deadly rival - is the official World Cup sponsor. Last night, however, Fifa denied that any Nike clothing had been confiscated.

so were the England supporters

Anti-Dutch? The FIFA officials just seem a bit overeager to get their hands on some Dutch tail. I'd rather say that's being overly fond of the Dutch.

Pfft, if they want the Dutch not to wear the trousers then they should give them part of the sponsership fee.

Exactly. If I didn't get paid by Budweiser, I'm not going to abide by their restrictions.

It's bad enough that only Bud is available at the venues. Bud. In Germany. There are innumerable superior beers available, especially in Germany, and yet we're stuck with Bud.

It ain't Polish Budvar either, which is a lot better than the USian piss-water that dares call itself "Budweiser."

If I was Dutch, I'd just show up to all the following games in my underwear. Make a bit of a statement I suppose.
