Fraggle Rock: Hidden Politics?

The Vallies of Death

Was the creator of the children's classic The Fraggles trying to promote wicked ways? was he a left wing libertarian? On drugs? Is there hidden meaning! discuss.. tell me if im talking rubbish! i dont take myself too seriously :p

Lets see, there is clearly first of all a metaphor of society, with the fraggles being the middleclasses, the raddish growing scary ones are clearly the oppressive overlords. the poor little builder guys are quite clearly the lower classes, who constantly get stomped on, toiling away for what reward? thier cities being EATEN by the fraggles.

Then of course there is the hippy, the slight homosexual undertones between our main character male fraggles, and the CONSTANT joy filled THEFT of raddishes.

and when they are really really stuck, they consult a trash heap for advice.. im slightly stuck on this one!

GREAT tv show though, why did u die! why!

The Fraggles?

such a question, though so short, i find deeply, deeply, disturbing.

Look, it is simple. Fraggle rock is a commentary on the US. The Fraggles represent the US army, and the radishes represent oil. The trash heap represents the preserved brain of McCartney.

We're the old men here Ace.

That show was cancelled before most of the posters here were even thought of.

i like what your saying with the us army refference, perhaps true. but who are the little builder men then.. Third world civilians? or is it the tax payer, whos hard work is eaten up by the tax for military funding

Both, and neither. There are many layers of symbolism to the Fraggles. For example, Sweetums is equivilant to the British Redcoats during the Revolutionary era, the Third Reich, and the Islamic fundamentalists.

AH HA HA HA! excellent, hats off to you sir. Less perhaps the redcoats, but i definetly see islamic fundamentalist there. I think the raddish theft also symbolises the cold war. the fraggles are america, who always make fools of the (seemingly threatening, but never producing results) defenders of the RED raddish, USSR.

You know, it's funny, because I liked Fraggle Rock growing up, but didn't realize how trippy it was until I saw an episode a little while ago.

It was about a war between Fraggle Rock and a previously undiscovered 'Fraggle Cave'... I kid you not. Everyone in Fraggle Cave was boring and ultra-conservative, but had weaponry hidden away just in case...

I don't even remember how it all ended, but there was definitely a war... which is just weird when they spend most of their time swimming or eating doozer buildings.

I have to agree with the OP that there must be some political bent to the show. I'm guessing 'trash heap' is a reference to religion?

The Fraggles have a political agenda about as much as the Teletubbies have a gay agenda.

One of the very first episode was all about ecology. The Great Trashheap made the radishes disappear so the Doozers couldn't build, so the Fraggles couldn't eat, and so the Gorgs couldn't make anti-vanishing cream. It seemed a little convoluted to me but the idea was that everyone depended on everyone else.

I never saw Fraggle Rock, but there was a preview for it on my movies. The VHS version of The Muppet Movie, I think. I always wanted to see it.
