the most idiotic thing I have heard today....

I was running around shopping today, and this lady in line with me starts complaining about gas prices and how she is glad she got this really good deal on this terrible shirt she is holding up

"I got it at 60% off!"

thinking both

A) this is the ugly-est shirt I have ever seen

and

B) that's an awesome deal, even if it is an ugly shirt

I asked to see the tag with the mark down.......

it had been marked down 50% and then had been marked down 10% after that.

stupid idiot.

what's the most idiotic thing you have heard today?

At least they can add the integers 50 + 10 together, we'll start on multiplication of fractions/decimals/percents later.

UM...

She got it at 50% off the original price... then 10% off the 50% price.

So if it was a ten dollar shirt (you did say it was fugly) it was marked down to $5.00, then had another 10% (aka $0.50) taken off.

I saw a car driving down my street at 70mph, in a 30 zone as I was pulling out. I did my civic duty, and called the Hosuton Police on my cell-phone as I drove down the street--had the good luck to catch him at the light, 'cause he was a speeder, but apparently not a runner.

The dispatchers aske me (swear to God!) "What do you want me to do about it?"
I told her whatI would tell anyone with a double-digit Iq who jsut brain-farted; "I want you to do your goddamn job!" I wisely hung-up straightaway after that. You can't beat--or fight--government stupidity.

I shouldn't have been surprised, becasue another dispatcher did the same thing--the exact same thing--when I called a coupel of years ago to report someone doing 50 (80km/h) in a school zone. Our school zones are 20 (about 32km/h), so you can see where that really sucked. They're just lazy here, and they wonder why our murder rate's jumped 30% in the past six months.

How exactly would she be able to get a car there to catch the guy? Is she supposed to take your word for it that he was speeding and put out an APB and pull him over later in the day, speeding or not? What would keep me from calling them a say they you where speeding, then?

Speeding is one of those "have to be there" crimes-I have to agree with the dispatcher, what exactly did you expect her to do?

Interesting cultural contrast here. Without delving into what "should" a person do, you response would be quite untypical in Australia. For example, if there are speed cameras set up somewhere, people who see them flash their lights at approaching cars. Radio stations have a call-in service so the locations can be broadcast.

We do that in the states, too.

You could have gotten the license number and description of the vehicle. Then you could have gone to the police station and sworn out a complaint. The police cannot issue a traffic ticket unless they see the vehicle committing the offense.

So, the next time the dispatcher asks that question just ask where the nearest police station is so you can go there and file a complaint.

I guess it depends on whether you think the purpose of the cameras is to catch speeders or prevent speeders. Personally, I prefer a preventative approach and knowing there are speed cameras in an area will certainly prevent me from speeding. In fact, we might be able to prvent more speeders if we make it appear to be more cameras than there really are. :)

Oh yeah, the wonder dispatcher will get a car there in the blink of an eye so it can catch the person speeding to atually charge them with something. If you don't have a badge and lights, stop wasting the dispatcher's time with speeders.
Did I forget to mention you need a properly calibrated radar as well?
Unless you have some amazing eyes and math skills, you can't eyeball a car's speed.

The dispatchers aske me (swear to God!) "What do you want me to do about it?"

Maybe the despatcher could have issued you a ticket for talking on your cellphone whilst driving at the same time, and creating an even greater hazard than someone that may or may not have been speeding.

I shouldn't have been surprised, becasue another dispatcher did the same thing--the exact same thing--when I called a coupel of years ago to report someone doing 50 (80km/h) in a school zone. OK, I'll assume that your radar vision is recently calibrated so you can judge speeds accurately, what has the lack of reaction to a minor traffic offence got to do with the spiralling murder rate? Maybe it was a murderer fleeing the scene of the crime, or possibly all the cops are busy investigating serious crime and so can't be bothered replying to every idiot with a cell phone that calls them.

I'm glad to see even the law has no time for such a petty narc. Kind of restores some faith in the system. Since when is it your civic duty to be a busybody dick?
