Too Many Cards at the World Cup

I think that there are too many yellow cards being handed out this time around.

Theres a lot of players who wont be at their 3rd games, and many games end with teams having 10 players.

Theres waaay too many cards, I've been seeing this in all the games I've watched. There should be more warnings, the game cant be played this way

I assume you mean USA-Italy

Since I'm sure we are really talking about one game in particular, yes the USA getting those two red cards was complete bullshit. Still managed to tie however. :)

Says the expert. It can, but it will just be much less interesting. Not that tou can beat the boringness-osity of the cup as it is.

I didn't say anything about you caring about the US but that the game was a great example of the cards coming out really fast.

The game did remind me of the situation, but that was really pushing it, that game was filled with fights

Yeah, of course I did.

As for the rest - I'm not sure, actually.

On one hand, I think the rules are at times so strictly in favour of a yellow card that it takes away some of the referees' discretion - which, in some cases, is not the perfect outcome.

On the other hand, this reduction of referee discretion is often enough a good thing (well, duh, which is why they made the rules in the first place) seeing how it reduces those widely varying decisions we used to have which only depended on the individual referee.

I find it interesting that a ref that had been suspended for "Irregularites" in his calls several years ago is all of a sudden allowed to ref a Cup match. What a disaster. Hey you urugauyan POS ref :upyours:

Deserved, right. That first one especially looked like it came from something I've seen before and would only get a yellow at most. I don't even know what that second one was about. That ref didn't know what the hell he was doing.

It's not 'all of a sudden'. There's a list as long of your arm of high profile games this guy has refereed since the suspension.

It looked like red to me (coming in with two legs), the second one was second yellow card and thus red.

132 yellows, 10 reds, in 26 games. 5 yellows per game, one red every 2.6 games. It's slightly above average (IIRC, league season averages are generally 3.5 yellows per game and one red every four games). Could be worse.

I tihnk they should hand out more!
But for diving and being 'gay' on the ground.
Either man on man action after a goal is scored or 'owwies mommy i'm not really hurt just faking it'.

Are they EPL stats cause i think it might have something to do with the percentage of 'Europeans' collected in one place at a time?

Nah, I'm sad and geekily interested in football stats, so I looked at the top division for England, Spain, Italy and Germany.

Well that is pretty definitive then isn't it?
How many of these have gone to African nations?
Angola had 5 players sent off against Portugal in a 'friendly' early this year apparently.

I'm not surprised. To get into the round of 16 is priority of all teams - for smaller teams like Australia, they are more likely to get a few cards.

The Serbs however where getting alot.

Some of those yellows were dubious ... 4 for Australia so far. Serbs are a little hot-headed so their tackles are nasty at times. Didn't work, Argies trashed them.

Two reds have gone to Africans - one for Togo, one for Angola. 29 yellows to Africans, which is above the average. Assuming they were evenly distributed, there'd be five yellows per game, so 2.5 for each side. There have been eight games involving African teams, so they should have 20 yellows in total. Conclusion: African teams are 50% more likely than average to get yellows.

That is bloody brilliant!
2 reds in 10 Is 20% but they only make up roughly 12% of the teams so they have a higher number for them too.
You didn't count Tunisia though.:p

Yeah, I saw that, but I figured that it's too low a number to be significant. America have 2 red cards as well, and they make up 3.125% of the teams...

Didn't I? I thought I had...

Yes, I did.

I think Angola have the worst discipline so far, with 8 yellows and one red. Serbia are close behind on 7/1.
