Portugal vs. Iran

Well the end of the first half leaves us with a 0-0 score.

Both sides have their chances but just couldn't finish.

Who is going to come out on top?
I V Stalin

Portugal probably. Iran's only hope really is from a set-piece. Portugal are creating a fair few chances and it won't be long until they put at least one away.

Portugal for mine, but if they can't put Iran away, then I don't think they'll go any further than the next round.

I'm waiting for Portuagal to get on track. They are my darkhorse candidate to win it all. Of course they have disappointed in the past, with plenty of talent, but not the will to get the job done.

Nah, Spain and the Czech Republic are the 'dark horses' this time round. Portugal only managed to draw with Liechtenstein in qualifying.

Well, I agree. Too often Ronaldo does all his dinky stepovers then his cross hits the first man. Or is blocked. Or he gets tackled and sits on the floor with his arms in the air like a little kid expecting to be picked up. Mick McCarthy was commenting on Ronaldo as a Portugal player because he was being paid to do so by the BBC during the Portugal - Iran match. Keane's a dick. Great footballer, but a dick.

Ronaldo brings a lot more to United's team than people appreciate. He can actually pass when in the mood, whilst he always constitutes a threat. Defenders are bloody terrified of him, and tend to be gravitate towards him, leaving Rooney, RVN and others free.

Keane is not a dick. He is the best midfielder of his era, and a superb porfessional. You're just upset because he beat Vieira up, all the time.;)

He also happens to be a United legend. If you didn't see his performance in Turin in 1999 you can't understand.

He doesn't always constitute a threat. He tends to become anonymous if the game isn't going his way, and isn't always 'in the mood'. Some defenders are terrified of him, because they're worried he'll dive at any time and get them sent off.

Keane is a dick. He is indeed a great player, as I said before, and I know he's a United legend. I did see the semi-final in '99. This doesn't change the fact that his presence is not exactly conducive to a calm atmosphere at a club. He is far too quick-tempered and vengeful (just ask Haaland). Ergo, he is a dick.

I can't actually dispute that. Keane as a person is a complete twat, however he's sufficiently good to be forgiven

As for Ronaldo, I know. He is terribly inconsistent, but given what he's gone through this season, I feel his performances have been commendable.

Good game. Nice ball possession and control. Great goal by Deco and good team effort overall. The normal starters will rest against Mexico. Portugal looked pretty good. Maniche and Costinha are two luxury midfielders. There are few national sides that can compare with Portugal's midfield ball control trio. Deco, Figo and C. Ronaldo.

Man oh man!!!
C R was on fire.

Actually no he wasn't. He has to play to start playing for the team and not for his ego. Judging his first two games I'd say he's more of an actor than a football player. It will be a shame if he can't get his act together. He has enough talent to win games singlehandedly.

The Czech Republic's horse just got a little darker. I agree with you that Spain should go deep, but I still think Portugal has the talent to win it all, if they can find a way to play as a team.

I don't think they did that today against Iran. They got their three points, but their real test will come against Mexico.

The problem is that this is exactly what CR thinks - and it is the most ridiculous thing that can be said about a football player. Football is a team sport, and no one wins games singlehandedly.

You are right about him being a better actor than player, though he is in my top two of players most likely to make the wrong decision when in possession of the ball - in competition with Robinho.

No it won't. Their real test will begin in the 2nd round when they play Argentina or Holland. Against Mexico most starters will be benched.

I liked the way they played today. Should they play this way with teams that don't park their team bus in front of the goal they might do something nice in this world cup.

What on earth are you on about?

Luxury midfielders? Ball control trio?
Maniche and Costinha are still two of the best defensive midfielders in the game. Remember they were European champions with FC Porto a few years ago. The 69% ball control Portugal enjoyed in the first half was thanks mostly to them.

Ball control trio? I'm speaking of Deco, C. Ronaldo and Figo.
There aren't many national sides that can boast three midfield starters with their ball control and dribbling prowess.
