Lawyers: Threats Used Against Marines
Jun 16 8:14 PM US/Eastern

SAN DIEGO

Pentagon investigators threatened the death penalty and used other coercive techniques to obtain statements from some of the seven Marines and a Navy corpsman jailed for the shooting death of an Iraqi civilian, two defense lawyers say.

Attorney Jane Siegel, who represents Marine Pfc. John Jodka, 20, said Naval Criminal Investigative Service officials spoke to her client three times after he was taken into custody May 12. Jodka was questioned for up to eight hours at a time and was not offered water or toilet breaks, Siegel said.

This sound suspiciously similar to complaints made by criminal defendants in other US military prisons where such techniques have apporval at the highest levels (GWB and pals).

edit: removed for questionability - may be back...

Hmmm... yes, maybe the comments were a bit borderline. I'll take them out just to be safe. But the sentiment that this should be rather controversial remains.

The addition to the title (note not seen on the forum page) is an accurate description of the thread. The US military has -potentially- very seriously abused the rights of lower level servicemen in the same manner it has done with the criminal defendants held a gitmo.

US policy in this regard is on the slippery slope and sliding fast. It reminds me of the famous poem:

Als die Nazis die Kommunisten holten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Kommunist.

Als sie die Sozialdemokraten einsperrten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Sozialdemokrat.

Als sie die Gewerkschafter holten,
habe ich nicht protestiert;
ich war ja kein Gewerkschafter.

Als sie die Juden holten,
habe ich nicht protestiert;
ich war ja kein Jude.

Als sie mich holten,
gab es keinen mehr, der protestieren konnte.

(translation)

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

The US government decided they could ignore the rights of one set of prisoners (gitmo), and they got away with it. Then they did it to another set (Iraq), and the people responsible got away with it (by blaiming it on lower levels of management). And now they appear to be trying it yet again with another set, who are natives.
