For all you civilian forum go-ers, whatever country you may live in (provided it has a military), how do you view the prospect of enlisting in your country's armed forces?

Obviously, if you are a civilian, you are not in the service - for one reason or another. This poll is not asking whether you have enlisted, or are going to enlist, but rather how you feel about the option of enlisting.

In most forseeable futures, I cannot picture myself joining the military. That's not to say it isn't appealing to me in any way, just that I currently have different plans for my future. I'm a student. As of present, I can only envision myself joining an armed force in the highly unlikely events of civil war, revolution, or global war.

Not appealing - I am a "pacifist."
Not appealing - I just couldn't hack it.
Somewhat appealing - Perhaps if I trusted my country more.
Somewhat appealing - If we entered a major war and my country needed me.
Appealing - I've got nothing for me at home.
Appealing - Serving one's country is a prideful duty.
Appealing - I want to kill a man/woman.

I enlisted after I had a college degree and a successful career. After a successful tour, I went back to school and am now enjoying another career.

I had a good time in the Army, and saw a lot of the world. It's not for everyone, but it's a positive experience for me.

Also, in civil wars, you don't always get a choice on whether or not you're going to join a military or rebel group.

Deserters in civil wars are usually hung or shot.

I'll be enlisting in a couple years. I believe it's every citizen's duty to protect their nation in some way.

Is there a reason you started two threads on this?

Anyway, it is extremely unappealing to me; I would never do it, for a wide variety of reasons.

I thought about enlisting after highschool, got a perfect score on my asvab, but got married and had kids instead. I would enlist if I felt my country truely needed me, but right now I have decided to be selfish and raise my children.
