Ecuador v. Costa Rica

I V Stalin
15-06-2006, 13:27
This is the most important match of the tournament so far - a draw will see Germany qualify top of group A, a win for Ecuador will see both them and Germany qualify, while a win for Costa Rica all but eliminates Poland from the competition.

So. Predictions? I'm going for a narrow Ecuador victory - either 2-1 or 3-1.

Hey, I V, I've not seen you about for a while.

Who will Germany meet in the next round if they qualify top?
Aelosia

Ecuador wins for 1 or two goals...

2-0 or 3-1 being the score...

But then, it is a close call, Ecuador has a pretty good assembled team, but Costa Rica has Wamchope

Hey, I V, I've not seen you about for a while.

Who will Germany meet in the next round if they qualify top?
:) Nice to know people miss me. I was away for the weekend and I always find it a bit difficult to get back into the swing of things when I've been away for a few days.

If they finish top, they meet the team that finishes second in group B (England's group). The next two group B matches are at 5 and 8 pm today, England v. Trinidad and Tobago, and Sweden v Paraguay. Assuming England win, they'll qualify, and the other team to qualify will most likely be the winner of Sweden v. Paraguay. If that ends as a draw, the group B table will look like this:
England, played 2, won 2, 6 points
Sweden, played 2, drawn 2, 2 points
Paraguay, played 2, drawn 1, lost 1, 1 point
T&T, played 2, drawn 1, lost 1, 1 point

I'm assuming England beat T&T by more than 1 goal there. Sweden play England in their last game, and would have to win or hope for a draw in the other match for them to qualify.

I've got a bad feeling about the England game. I think they'll win, but now that Rooney has been declared 'match fit' I hope they don't chuck him in too early and have him do even more serious damage.

As for the game today, I'd go with Ecuador 2-0.

I missed Ecuador's first match of this World Cup, but from the first 10 minutes of this one I can tell they are a hell of a lot more organised as a team than they were at the last World Cup. It's hardly surprising they're doing so much better than they did last time.

Half an hour into the game, and Costa Rica look as if they're going to make a fight of this. In the last 10 minutes they've shown more attacking promise, but are finding it hard to break down a stubborn Ecuador defence. Ecuador's attack is playing well - they've had several good chances. They seem happy to let Costa Rica attack then hit them on the break. While this tactic works in principle, I think they should be going for a second before sitting back. We know Costa Rica can score as they put two past Germany.

One of the choices in the poll was about US invading so if you don't like what you read ask the poll maker to change the alternatives.

And on a related note, somewhat, how can the US be ranked 5:th in the world? Everyone knows they're not that good. What mechanisms decide the ranking anyway?

What option is that? There isn't any option about a US invasion. I see a PITCH (meaning FIELD) invasion so what the heck are you smoking?

"Pitch invasion leads to America declaring war on both countries"
So I replaced "declares war on" with "invade" but that's not too big a stretch of imagination.

I predict 2 - 0 to Ecuador and then an interesting match to determine the first and second place on the 20th.

Technically not. If Costa rica win this then the table is:

Germany 6 points
Ecuador 3 points
Costa Rica 3 points
Poland 0 points

Then if Germany beat Ecuador and Poland destroy Costa Rica by 5 goals or so then the final table would be

Germany 9 points
Poland 3 points
Ecuador 3 points
Costa Rica 3 points

with Poland getting through on goal difference.

It is a long shot, but still mathematically possible.

Probably not. I mean, he's tied on two with 7(?) other players and I don't think Ecuador will get past the second round. At most he'll score 5 (one more in this match, one against Germany, one in the second round), and I think someone will easily score more than that. I too gave them no chance before the tournament, based on their qualifying campaign. However they have played much better than expected. Either that, or the opposition has been very weak. Group A is supposed to be the weakest group (though if Ukraine carry on like yesterday group H will compete for this epithet), so it is difficult to judge their real potential. Let us see how they do against Germany, but even that may not be really indicative as I am willing to bet that both teams will rest some players.
