Executions for the prisoners on the go!
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-06-14-death-van_x.htm?csp=34
While I personally don't see much difference between being shot by a firing squad and being lethally injected with chemicals (you're dead in either case), somehow this is being spun as being more civilized.
Ok, I'll buy that it's less messy, but I've always felt that lethal injection was actually intended to make killing easier on the executioner. If you're going to kill people as judicial punishment, it shouldn't be easy, or hidden in a van (or closed room). It should be out in the open, and it should be messy - just to remind everyone that what we're doing is execution, and not some minor administrative procedure.

Nice to know where the ChiComs are taking their lessons from.

Considering that there's 70 crimes for which you can be sentenced to death for in China and that there something like a 99% prosecution rate, having new, faster and more exciting ways of killing doesn't really make me any more keen on China than I already am.

I'm sure that if it picks up live passengers and throws dead bodies out on the pavement, it's going to disrupt a parade without making any noise at all.

That's not good enough. If they like they can call it Massacre Transit.

Dumping a large amount of potassium intracardiac causes cardiac arrest.
Not exactly my idea of a quick way to die (you get to enjoy the heart attack, which is undoubtably painful).

In the US, they usually use barbituates to put you to sleep first so you don't feel the heart attack that the potassium gives you.
Sort of a "kinder, gentler" thing.

From the article you linked to
There is no such debate in China, which uses the same three-drug cocktail as the U.S. federal government and most U.S. states: sodium thiopental to make the condemned unconscious, pancuronium bromide to stop breathing, potassium chloride to stop the heart.Hmm.. Sodium thiopental is a barbiturate. Didn't know that.

I still feel that if you're going to be in the business of killing people, that lethal injection is actually making it psychologically easier on the executioner. I don't believe that's a good step.
If people don't have the will to kill people the hard way, then they shouldn't be killing at all.

I think that if you can't stomach public executions by the more traditional methods (shooting, hanging, beheading, electrocution) then you should not have capital punishment.

It's not for everyone. And I think that by making it "easy" on the executioner, you foist it off on people who might otherwise object.
If you had to kill your own food, would you still eat meat?

Good for you then. And if you can't kill a convicted prisoner with a gun or a rope, you shouldn't be doing capital punishment (I think if you can't watch it you shouldn't be doing it).

The guy executed in the article reminds me of a Dick Tracy character:
CHONGQING, China — Zhang Shiqiang, known as the Nine-Fingered Devil, first tasted justice at 13. His father caught him stealing and cut off one of Zhang's fingers.
Oh no, its the nine-fingered devil! Run for your lives!

You can't make this stuff up. It's more convienient for the criminal. Doesn't that just give you a warm fuzzy feeling?

Yes, instead of being captured, taken to prison, tried in a courtroom, and executed in a deathhouse, they can just drive to your house and do everything right there in the van.

yeah, I never ever understood that. or the fact, that in the US, you cannot execute a sick man (or woman).
"I am sorry warden, I have the sniffles"
"well, that's OK, we will give you the best medical care that the taxpayers can afford"
"great, then I won't be executed?"
"nope, we'll make ya well, then we'll kill ya"
"oh"
sorry, don't agree with the death penalty, and hence, some of the backward "rules"

Local executions
Makers of death vans say they save money for poor localities that would otherwise have to pay to construct execution facilities in prisons or court buildings. The vans ensure that prisoners sentenced to death can be executed locally, closer to communities where they broke the law.
That "deters others from committing crime and has more impact" than executions carried out elsewhere, Kang says.
Good grief.....some people get nervous when they see a police car patroling an area. I can't imagine the mood of the public when they see "The Death Van" rolling by.
Edit: Death Van not Car.
