These things are great for spotting who likes what bands. If a group is listed more than once with random songs, the person likes x-group and that is probably the only reason they are on the list.

Thats why I hate these threads.
No one ever really chooses the songs/artists/albums they actually feel are "the greatest ever"...they pick thier personal favorites.

NOT the same.

Yeah as far as you go. Music man it's 100% subjective just coz you don't think The Unforgiven is Metalicas best song, that don't mean that the poster thinks like that.

Shit I like Metalica, but I would not place any of their songs in the top ten. Also go on I dare you to jot down what you really consider the best 10 songs every with only two mins to think about it. I couldn't even narrow it down to my ten best songs, what about the best 100 in no particular order?

6. Sweet Child of Mine- Guns n Roses

3. Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix
2. Paint it Black- The Doors
1.Sweet Home Alabama (all right, so it may be a some what country song, but nothing gets a bar rocking faster and people dancing than this song-- and I am drawing a blank on the artist right now)

Yeah, but what the hell, there's no way you can subjectively pick the 10 best albums - what criteria do you use? Sales? The degree of influence? Musical complexity? Originality? It's impossible to take a non-partial viewpoint...

So I picked my personal favourites.

I'm not going to try to put them in order, but off the top of my head, I'd say that "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Satisfaction," "Imagine," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Respect," "Layla," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and "Yesterday" are all strong contenders for the top ten. "Won't Get Fooled Again" in particular has to be on my top ten list, since I've always seen it as being sort of the archetypal rock song.

Smoke on the water

Okeydoke.

It's remarkable that the songs like that one, with fairly simple music, seem to come in first so much-- I've seen a lot of Beatles and stuff like that on people's lists (I'm not really one to talk, but hey). Sure, the Beatles are good, and simple songs can be great too, but doesn't greatness involve not only songwriting talent but also some exercise of musical ability?

I did mean added to a list. I haven't seen them all, but I'm going to bet that it's not on here. There are a lot of AC/DC songs which could be used to represent a great deal of the rock universe.
Quite so. I'll take it onto my list, which makes two:
Tuff--American Hairbands
AC/DC--Ballbreaker

It suggests to me there were way too many boomers on the voting list. A top-ten list of great rock n' roll songs without Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, or even Hendrix mentioned, and with the Beach Boys (?) is one that can only arise through the hazy nostalgia of boomerdom, not through any accurate reflection of musical skill or quality. It also seems they were intent on playing up the social consciousness of rock. Of course, they ignore the fact that Ozzy, Trent Reznor, and Zach De La Rocha all make better socially-conscious music than what was listed. This again is indicative of boomerdom, because if it actually critiques the plastic world boomers made, it doesn't really count.

Very true. The Beach Boys suck, let's face it. Their music was catchy, but in terms of quality, I'd pick Avril Levigne over them anyday (and I don't like Avril). Let's see: what did the Beach Boys sing about? Cars, surfing, and chicks. Entertaining, perhaps, but if Monet or Renoir had just painted hot chicks standing next to sports cars on the beach, would anybody give a fuck? No, absolutely not. Why? Because if they did that, their art would not matter.

I second this.

However, something to think about. If Renoir and Monet painted chicks, cars, and surfing, it would be some of the most impressive artistic work ever created, as only the chicks had been invented yet.

That's right. Too commonplace. Nothing special about it if someone implements exactly the same ideas everyone else has.

Everyone is simply listing their personal favorite rock songs. How about establishing a criteria for "greatest?"

The most influential? The longest on the charts? The best selling? The most staying power? The most frequently covered? The most likely to be remember 100 years from now?

Tell us why they are the greatest, as opposed to just listing ten songs you would put on your own party mix CD.

I would pick The Beatles as the most influential, I have read many band bios and they all seem to pay homage to The Beatles.
Longest on the charts: I think The Beatles still hold that (does anyone know for sure?)
The most covered song is "Yesterday"
I would say The Beatles will definatly be remembered, even 200 years from now.

The most covered song is "Yesterday"

Perhaps.

Giving Yesterday a run for the money would be Louie Louie. A Californian radio station played 63 hours and 800 versions of the song in a row

The site below has an interesting story of Louie, Louie and its famous chord progression that has found it way into the Yardbirds My Girl Sloopy, the McCoys' Hang On Sloopy, the Troggs' Wild Thing, the Remain's Why Do I Cry, the Rumors' Hold Me Now, Outlaws' Don't Tread On Me, the Stones' Get Off Of My Cloud, the Righteous Brothers' You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', and Lou Reed's Vicious.

10. God Only Knows- The Beach Boys
9. Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen
8. I Am The Walrus- The Beatles
7.Don't Stop Believing- Journey
6.Wouldnt it Be nice- The Beach Boys
5. Like a Rollin Stone- Bob Dylan
4. Imagine- John Lennon

Honorably Mentions- About a Girl- Nirvana
Octopuses Garden- The Beatles
Carry on our wayward son- Boston
I want to hold your hand - The Beatles
Blowing in the wind- Bob Dylan

There's some damn good songs on your list. I'm happy and surprised to see "About a Girl" get some recognition in particular -- it's pretty underrated, even among Nirvana fans. I'd exchange "Octopus's Garden" for another Beatles song, though.

A possible Top Ten of mine:

1. "Yesterday" - The Beatles
2. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana
3. "Wish You Were Here" - Pink Floyd
4. "Baba O'Reilly" - The Who
5. "Dazed and Confused" - Led Zeppelin
6. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" - U2
7. "Debaser" - Pixies
8. "Saving Grace" - Tom Petty
9. "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith
10. "Purple Haze" - Jimi Hendrix Experience

All of those are very influential and seminal classics.
