Holy smokes...this bird is a good imitator.

I wonder what would happen if it lived next to a porn house?
Very smart bird. I wonder HOW it evolved that though? hmm....:D

It's interesting that you equate the ability to mimic without context as a sign of intellegence...

I never said mimicry=intelligence. But HOW did the bird evolve incredibly accurate mimicry?

The only information about the bird is it's ability to mimic. You said, "Very smart bird." Only one way to connect two dots...
It was evolved because the bird with the more complex song got the better mates more frequently, the ones that had a better ability to mimic were able to sing more complicated songs and where selected preferentially. Over the course of time this bred better and better mimics.
It's not hard to figure out.

I didn't hear mimic the sound of a human. But it's still cool neverless!
Wonderful stuff. I like the narrator guy too. Nice, easy voice to listen to.

On the same note, HOW would God ever think to invent a bird that did such?

He could, but would he? My question wasn't CAN God create a bird like that, but HOW God would ever come up with the idea. What would be the point?

Mr. Nameless: Extremely bad form. Perhaps you find Designated's personal views objectionable, but calling him out on a such a technicality is in bad taste. I personally do not understand the underlying vitriol, but I can say that on a thread such as this one it is entirely out of line. DM was simply wishing to expose others who had not seen such a wonderful creature to it.
And before you attempt to engage in a lecture about evolutionary theory you might want to actually present a cogent theory about the bird's preposed evolution. Why would a bird actually develop in such a way as to favor complex songs? Complex songs would tend to establish one's identity as the exact species of prey a predator was looking for. Therefore, it makes no sense for a bird to develop as such. Mimicry, itself, however, does have certain advantages because if a predator cannot identify you as their prey they will tend to ignore you. And those predators who are fooled when they get close will find that "you aren't the bird I was looking for." In more modern times once the ability to create elaborate complexities of noises has been established in the genome, your explanation would be certainly correct, but during the period of evolutionary development it hardly suits as an explanatory model. During interruptions in natural equilibrium those with the greatest natural advantages are predisposed to survive, and so those with songs which would readily identify them as prey would be selected out. Complex songs in and of themselves are not evolutionarily adaptive, but mimicry is.
And as far as the thread goes: that bird is now my second favorite animal after the wolf. Any animal that can make a realistic sounding chainsaw noise is AOK in my book!

Lyrebirds are cool. I've been bushwalking, heard a camera noise & sure enough a Lyrebird walked across the path in front of me. They're beautiful looking birds too.

Presumably he's not known about in the US. Which is why they got Morgan Freeman to narrate March of the Penguins rather then him ;)

No, it was a chainsaw. Logging is common in the Lyrebird's habitat, automatic gunfire is extremely rare to non-existant.

Well he did imitate a car alarm. I figured if he heard car alarms he very well could've got a listen to some gun fire. But yeah.. it was the chainsaw starting up.

on topic: that bird is well cool. i've heard of them before but never actually seen footage of them. it's hard to believe when you just hear an audio track of them that the bird is really making the sound but that was pretty clear. awesome!
