The Top Ten Greatest Rock Albums

Amrotville
14-06-2006, 20:46
10. The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds.

You know, it's a peeve of mine. When I start listing the bands I listen to, everyone always adds The Beach Boys. I hate the Beach Boys! However, the album Pet Sounds is magnificent. It's one of those albums that would go over people's heads these days, about the young, ideaological, golden age Era youth realizing how bad things really are as the sixties go on. Today, people don't sit down and listen to Music like they should. They usually don't listen to music unless they are on the road.

9. The Clash-London Calling

I'm going to apologize for the lack of Punk rock on the list, but Punk really never made for good Album listening. The Exception is, of course, London Calling. It falls together as an album better then any other punk album I've downloaded, I mean listened to.

8. Meatloaf-Bat out of Hell

Meatloaf has something in common with Peter Framptom: Overall, not that good, but with one amazing album. Bat out of Hell scored number eight. Where do you suppose Framptom Comes Alive will score?

7. Supertramp- Breakfast in America

Supertramp has two albums on my list. This one has the better songs. Every song on it is a classic, from Gone Hollywood to Logical Song to Goodbye Stranger... It's as if the only Supertramp people know is on this CD.

6. Jethro Tull- Aqualung

This is pretty much the standard for Jethro Tull albums. What can I say, besides the fact that their is not a bad track on the thing?

5. Electric Light Orchestra- Time

ELO CDs have a tendency to piss me off. Tons of great songs, plus a few that really piss me off. This Album would probably be number Three or Four on the list, if not for "The Lights Go Down" which is a pitiful attempt at music on an otherwise brilliant Concept album.

4.The Beatles-Revolver

I thought about putting a tie between Revolver/Rubber Soul. Or just listing them as a double album. I consider the two a double album. So, why does this one get the list? Oh, obviously Elanor Rigby, one of the greatest songs ever written. Both Albums, however, show the transformation of the Beatles, from Pop Band to Artists.

3. Supertramp- Crime of the Century

Unlike Breakfast in America, this has a few tracks that aren't bad, but they do have to grow on you. Also unlike Breakfast in America, this one is an epic story of two people, friends who are very much unlike eachother. It's a sad story, really, and we wonder who is the more tragic, the one who had the life of success or the one with the life of poverty.

2. Peter Framptom-Framptom Comes Alive

I really considered making this the Number one spot. It was kind of hard not to. It's a fucking amazing album that should be part of everyone's collection. Probably has a high point with "Baby I Love Your Way" or "Do You Feel Like We Do".

1. Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run

Born to Run is obviously one of the best Rock songs ever written. So, why wouldn't the album that has it, along side Thunder Road, She's the One and Jungleland be number one?

This is my list. Comment, make your lists, ect.

Honorable mentions:

The Ramones-Rocket to Russia
System of a Down-Toxicity (not a system of a down fan, but this album is amazing)
The Beatles-Abbey Road
Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds
The Moody Blues-Days of Future Past
Styx-The Grand Illusion

I know it isnt an album exactly but what can I say? Im a dead head from Bakerspatch I'm allowed

Not really a big Floyd fan... I've taken alot of crap for this list already, and would like to elaborate on it:

These are not my favorite bands in order. Many exceptional bands make good songs, and not good albums. Also, there are certain biases. System of a Down-Toxicity gets an honorable mention over other albums I know are better. Why? Because, well, to make up for the lack of albums made before 1990. If I went on to 20 or 25, it would probably be lower on my list.

Anyway, back to Pink Floyd: I like bands who have more range then they do. However, I would like to say that had I expanded this, you would see The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon.
Not bad

In no particular order:

1.Queen-A Night at the Opera
2.Queen-A Day at the Races
3.The Beatles-Sgt. Pepper
4.Bon-Jovi-Slippery When Wet
5.Meatloaf-Bat Out of Hell
6.The Beatles-Abbey Road
7.Pink Floyd-The Wall
8.Meatloaf-Bat Out Of Hell II
9.Queen-Queen I
10.Queen-Queen II

Many of the albums people have listed i haven't listened to because i am not a huge fan of the bands, hence them not making the list. I am huge fan of Queen, as you can see, but i truly think their early albums are amazing.

You should listen to SOAD's eponymous debut. It's fucking brilliant, IMO one of the best metal albums ever made. Toxicity verges on both ridiculousness (Bounce, Psycho) and nu-metal (Chop Suey) too much for it to be a classic album.

My top 10? Not got a clue. The Fall of Math (by 65daysofstatic) would be in there, as would Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables (Dead Kennedys). Aphex Twin would most likely be in there as well, though I'm not sure which album. Dresden Dolls' debut would possibly make it, although more likely would be an honourable mention. Truth is, my top 10 changes too much all the time for me to give an absolute list.

Edit: Yes, I know Aphex Twin isn't exactly rock, but...meh.

3. Metallica - Garage, Inc.

   What?! That pile of......*deflates*...*sighs*

I'm not a massive fan of Metallica (hell, I went to see Killing Joke instead of Metallica at Download last weekend), but I'll admit they've done some great albums. Namely the Black Album, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. But Garage, Inc? It's shite!

I don't know ... a hint maybe? Is that Patton's new abomination? ;)
He did *some* good with Fantomas ... and Bjork.
But his dining music album was really a little too much, and his lessons for voice was somewhat difficult unless you really felt like it was worth the time.

Although he's a genius, that album was the erratic accretia that comes from someone sacrificing art for ... well, i'm not really sure what. He's already a risk taker, obviously, but i really don't know how many people actually appreciate the real idea behind the album (i don't - i don't know wtf he was on or why bother with the $ and time).

So are they worth it? I don't want to say i want some of his older stuff, but at the same time, i do.

1. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
No other album has ever had the impact that this one has. EVER.
This is really the Beatles at the zenith of thier creativity, if not thier ability.

2. The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds.
Brian Wilson's opus...nuff said.

3. The Who: Live at Leeds.
The best live album ever. (Sorry Deadheads)

4. Black Sabbath: Volume IV.

Its debatable among Black Sabbath fans wich is thier best, but none of them deny that this is probably thier heaviest.
This is also a contender for best Metal album ever.
Black Sabbath were the "Beatles of Heavy Metal", before them, it didnt exist.
If anyone who considers themselves a fan of either rock, or metal doesnt own this album, take note: YOU ARE A POSER.

5. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon.
The Best Concept Album Ever Recorded.

6. Im going to give a Tie for this one to The Eagles, and Boston.
Although I dislike, both, they each have an album in the top five best selling records of all time list, so this deserves respect, even if I dont believe that "it sold a lot of records" equates to "It was a really good album".

7. Led Zeppelin 4.
Who the hell doesnt own this record?!
Yes, its been played to death, but you cant deny its brilliant.

8. The Rolling Stones: Beggars Banquet.
The Rolling Stones are probably the second best band ever, even if I didnt give them a top-five slot.
Heres an example of why theyre respected so much, by so many.

9. Metallica: Master of Puppets.

Okay...hold on...
Yes...they suck balls now, but once upon a time, Metallica rocked harder than anyone else.
A good friend of mine says that "...and Justice for All" is thier opus, but I consider it to be this one.
Either way, this is one of the best heavy metal albums ever written, and therefore, deserves to be given the respect its due.

10. Tie between :
Alice Cooper, Killer.
The first Shock-Rocker.....this album has some really, really cool songs on it.
I pity anyone who doesnt have it.

Aerosmith, Get your Wings.
Once again...today, these guys suck.
Once upon a time...they did not.
This is the album they established themselves as having something over the rest of the Stones-esque bands of the early 70's.
Seasons of Wither, anyone?

1) Nirvana - Nevermind
No other album comes even close to the sheer magnificence of this album. (Not even other Nirvana albums.)

2) The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Okay, this is sort of cheating because it's a double album and not all of the songs are good, but there is more than a single album's worth of excellent songs here.

3) Metallica - Metallica
The only other album they have where all of the songs are good is Ride the Lightning, but this one has more songs, so it's better by default.

4) Local H - As Good As Dead
A woefully underrated band. They're what's called alternative rock, but aren't afraid to get a little bit experimental, too, although I have to admit this is their least experimental of all of their albums.

5) Motörhead - Overkill
This one was their first big hit, and can be said to have kickstarted the speed metal movement.

6) Babes In Toyland - Fontanelle
This album is excellent, and has the added bonus of fulfilling my women who rock quota (shame on the rest of you. ;))

7) Jack Off Jill - Clear Hearts Grey Flowers
More women who rock. Sadly, this is only the second of the band's two albums, they are no more.

8) The Gits - Frenching the Bully
Perhaps the single best punk album. Mia Zapata R.I.P.

9) The Melvins - Houdini
The long suffering and little-recognized band was on a major label, and this was their major-label debut. Kurt Cobain plays on two tracks on this album.

10) Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Manages to be both slow and heavy, an excellent doom record. Cathedral does doom better than Black Sabbath does.

Warning: Do not take anything this boy says seriously. He is young and has noit developed a decent mind for thinking. He may be indecent at times, and please ignore it. He has no selfrespect, and a suckish life. He may rip things off of Dave CHappelle, Carlos Mencia, Jon Stewart, or Stephen Colbert. Ignore that as well. In fact, thinking to hard about what he says may make your face implode. Thank you for reading this disclaimer.

After I glue this to half my poists, you people STILL don't get the point. I don't give a flying f*** about what I'm supposed to do. I do whatever the f*** I want to. I did not realize what this thread was about, I admit I am unobservent, but even now that I know, I'm not gonna say "sorry," and then kiss your feet. F*** you, and leave my skewed unobservency alone.

Seriously... Off the Deep End is good, but Poodle Hat and Running With Scissors are both better albums. So is Bad Hair Day. You can't really beat "We've been spendin' most our lives, living in an Amish paradise/No cops or traffic lights, livin' in an Amish paradise"
_______________________
In no particular order:

Leave A Whisper - Shinedown

"Rh-" - Siddharta (the album's name is "R h negative", and it's absolutely amazing. If you like any sort of heavy metal at all, get it right now. Anyone from Slovenia knows how much they rock. I have one of the very few English versions, though, so you better start learning Slovene;) :p )

Metallica - Metallica (and S&M for that matter, though it's not original songs for the most part)

Dark Side of the Moon

Appetite for Destruction - Guns 'n' Roses

Led Zeppelin IV

Anything by Bruce Springsteen (I can't pick a favorite, unless it's his Live in NYC)

Mezmerize/Hypnotize - System of a Down (they're technically separate albums, but then they're not, they're really a double album, and both parts are fairly short, and they kick ass)

The Battle of Los Angeles - Rage Against the Machine (ok, you might not consider it rock, but if it's got guitar riffs, it's good enough for me  )

Is that ten? Roughly.

Now, let me see:

Pink Floyd - The Wall, and The Dark Side of the Moon. Both ace albums, really show Floyd at their best.

Metallica - Metallica (The Black Album) and Master Of Puppets. Both show different qualities in Metallica, far more than are commonly attributed to them

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengence. The opening combination of 'The Hellion' and 'Electric Eye' is one of the best I've ever heard

AC/DC - Back in Black, and also Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

Megadeth - Rude Awakening, their live album from a few years ago. Listening to Mustaine sing 'Sweating Bullets' live still give me chills. Given that it was made after Mustaine got his injury and recovered, it just makes it all the better

Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell. I'm no Meatloaf fan, but I do recognise the quality of this album.

Guns N' Roses - The entire 'Use Your Illusion' album (yes, it was originally going to be a single album, so it counts) shows the variety that GNR can work with. Favourite track is 'Estranged' without a shadow of a doubt.

2. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
3. Led Zeppelin II
4. Crosby, Stills, & Nash - "Crosby, Stills, & Nash"

6. The Doors - "The Doors"
7. Santana - "Abraxas
8. AC/DC - "Back in Black"
9. Iron Maiden - "Iron Maiden"
10. Slayer - "Reign in Blood"

But that's not in perfect order.

I'm surpriesed that the Beatles didnt make as many lists as I thought, they have the top ten albums on my list.

True, thats why I don't cout beatles in any list because it would dominate it all and take away any variety from the list.

The only albums for me are Smiths albums (okay, that's not quite true). My personal favourite is Hatful of Hollow, but the one with the biggest musical impact is The Queen is Dead. It's an album that most ordinary citizens haven't heard of, but one that's influenced scores of modern musicians.

Seriously... Off the Deep End is good, but Poodle Hat and Running With Scissors are both better albums. So is Bad Hair Day. You can't really beat "We've been spendin' most our lives, living in an Amish paradise/No cops or traffic lights, livin' in an Amish paradise"
My my , this here Anakin guy..

3. Electric Light Orchestra - Eldorado

Too right it's cool. "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" is just about my favourite pop song of all time.

I love it too, especially since, now that I'm older, I can appreciate the lyrics. The whole album is probably my favourite complete piece by any band. Rock and classical music were meant to be together.
