Now my seven year old is his grade champion in spelling too. All his end of year tests are over and school is just a half day this week.
Today, he beat all the other 2nd graders in a spelling contest. He's following in his older brother's footsteps. (My 12 year old went on to the tri state competiton sponsored by Scripps-Howard)
We have to celebrate now.
My wife and I have read to all of our children since they were born on a regular basis-we also play Scrabble and Boggle, among other board games, with them often.
I firmly believe that this type of support and encouragement plays a large role in children's future success. Sometomes its hard to set aside time to give kids the attention they need-time flies and there is so much to do.
But-If you can make it happen, it seems to pay off.
Its working for me right now. I hope it keeps working for them.

Get your son to post so we can compare the spelling of some people here to that of a 7 year old.

I'm feeling it wont. The area we're moving to is fairly affluent, the school is new-and good.
I'm optimistic. If it turns out to be bad, we'll have to consider our alternatives. My wife and I can live anywhere with our jobs.

Thanks- they may have done well without my efforts, but I like to think I had a small part in it.
I dont know if I would say genius, but they are bright and enthusiastic. At the very least, they are above average.

All you need to do is help keep them interested. It's a tough road ahead but they have plenty of time. Parents play a key role in the lives of children, especially young ones. Just be there for them and give them positive reinforcement.

I agree and that where my efforts are.
We celebrate these events, so we are taking them out to eat tonight and we'll find something else fun to do-his choice-to mark the occaision.

That's wonderful to hear :) and well done! Even if it's a natural talent they have, you've put the effort into nurturing that and encouraging that and that's fantastic.
Just make sure they're aware that their success has no effect on your love for them. I'm sure you do, but I have to warn based on my own experiences - I got plenty of praise and encouragement, but ended up feeling like I'd disappoint/make them less proud/etc if I didn't maintain ridiculously high standards. Much more healthy attitude now, but suffered quite a lot because of that. The balance is important.
Overall, a resounding yay for you and your children :fluffle:
And now I must be off to bed. Huw does a good job at, uh, tiring me out....
