What is going to be the outcome of this one? Lord only knows after a blowout and a nail biter earlier today.

Who do you think is going to win?

To Quote from Wiki:

David Boon

The popularity of the stocky, moustached batsman extended beyond the pitch, where he became something of a cult figure for his drinking exploits and singing of team songs. He famously vomited on the hallowed Adelaide Oval turf in a WSC game in 1988 before a live nationwide TV audience of millions (he went on to make 122 and win Man Of The Match).

...

Boon achieved much fame and notoriety for consuming 52 cans of beer on a flight between London and Sydney before the victorious Ashes tour that saw Australia regain the trophy after five years of English dominance.

Whew, that was close.

And I almost hate to say it, because the Polish team was really better in the first half, and then they were one man short, but in the last half hour Germany was the better team and had what felt like a billion chances, so that goal was totally overdue.

I feel sorry for the Polish team being out, though. :(

But when that goal fell - lots of yelling and whooping in my building and fireworks going off all over the neighborhood, by the sound of it. :p

Also, the commentator mentioned this tiny little interesting bit of statistics trivia: until now, the only times the German team has won its first two World Cup games was in 1974 and 1990. I'm just saying. :D
OcceanDrive

AB Again
14-06-2006, 22:25
its all about complicated tie-breaker rules.

As soon as the regulations have finished downloading (at 1 bit per minute it feels like) I'll check what the tie breaker is.

5. The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as
follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria,
their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between
the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the
teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the
teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World
Cup™.

So if Costra Rica beat Ecuador by say 2 - 0 This would result in Costa Rica and Ecuador having 3 points each and a goal diff of 0, while Germany have 6 points and a goal diff of +3

Then for Germany to be eliminated both Costa Rica and Ecuador would have to win their third game by a margin of 2 goals. Which would transform their goal diffs into +2 and as Germany would have to lose by 2 goals for this to happen they would have a goal diff of +1 at best. So yes it is possible that Germany can still be eliminated, but extremely unlikely.

I'm guessing that a difficult 1:0 in favor of Germany will be the outcome.
Good effort!

Meh, that wasn't all that exciting was it. After the way they played the first game, I'd never have thought it would go like this - either they'd scored plenty, or they'd let in plenty.

Good thing was that the defense stood firm today. They looked pretty shaky against Costa Rica, although I still think that the first goal was just due to Arne Friedrich being asleep and ruining the offside trap. And the second one probably was offside.

Anyways, they played a lot more compact today, which is good. The problem was that Schweinsteiger didn't do nearly as much as he did against Costa Rica and the same goes for Schneider.
What the hell was Friedrich doing running up the field and putting in crosses? He's not that sort of player.

Podolski should probably be flogged for missing those chances, and Klose - well, I suppose he was pretty unlucky as well.

Odonkor I thought was great - for the first five minutes. Was it just me or did he run out of breath in no time flat?

Ballack...meh. He didn't really put his mark on the game, but then he often looks like he won't do anything and then he suddenly scores, like when he hit the crossbar.

So for the next game I'd say they should keep Friedrich in the back, and let Schneider do the crossing. And have a long talk with Schweinsteiger about what one needs to do to justify selection for the World Cup.

Kudos for Poland though. They did very well...just unlucky in the end. Although their goalie is an arsehole. I hate time-wasting.

"...und in der Hinterhand nen Master Plan."
A surprise win for Germany. :rolleyes:
Isn't a surprise when the unexpected happens?
Pffffft, Holland.
I certainly hope this won't come back to haunt me. :S
Nah - I got yer back ;)
Good effort!

Great post, totally agree - except for the bold part: Odonkor has hell of an acceleration, and what a beautiful pass that was to Neuville. That is exactly what this man is good for. Woohoo!

The most exciting moment of the game - that double cross-bar was crazy!!!

Grrr...I was rooting for Poland. It was certainly a heartpounding finish though, so I didn't walk away disappointed!:D

Oddly, a Polish friend of mine was mentioning the coach was being criticized a lot there for not choosing several very good players for the team. Anyone know anything about this?

Poland has a couple of older star players, such as Dudek, that the coach did not include in their World Cup squad. BBC report here. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/poland/4986084.stm)

Nothing more than the fuss in England about taking Walcott and an unfit Rooney instead of fit and more experienced players.

Germany had an unimpressive first half, but were far more convincing in the second; they were unlucky to not win 2-0.

Ukraine and Shevchenko should take a fucking note from Neuville on how to shoot goals.

It's disappointing that they didn't score more, but they were unlucky not to win 2-0 after the double crossbar. And on the upside, they didn't concede. Their defence was pretty strong. And Lehmann had a fairly good game, although Germany's offensive in the second didn't give Poland many chances to test Lehmann.

Oh my God, yes. Drove me crazy. And while I can see why why he was doing it in the final minutes, obviously (still hate it, but eh), he did it every frigging time he had the ball! WTF? It was like watching him swim through syrup. At least the crowd gave him hell for it.

Heh, did we all really watch the same game? I was as happy as the next person when he came in but I thought he was just... bad. I actually kept yelling at the TV because, come one, just because he's fast does not automatically make him just that good. He kept losing the ball time after time after endlessly fumbling around with it and trying to outsmart the Polish defenders descending on him, instead of just, hello, passing it to someone else. I'm firmly of the opinion he would have gotten whipped for his performance if not for that final great pass to Neuville. Really, if it's your job to run fast and get the ball, then just do that and don't try to be Ronaldinho.

I wouldn't know, I was busy baking pepperoni rolls... :( I was going to complain that you didn't bring us any, but then it occurred to me that - once more - the jury is still out on whether you're talking this (http://max.lots-of-dots.de/bilder/pepperoni.jpg) or this (http://www.valerios.co.uk/MEATS%20%20PAGE/MEAT%20SPEC/PEPPERONI%20STICK%20SPEC/images/PEPPERONI-STICK-spec_06.jpg). Heh, did we all really watch the same game? I was as happy as the next person when he came in but I thought he was just... bad.
The point about him is that he ruins an entire defensive setup just by his presence. He scrambles the whole wing because you can count on him to outsprint a marker and put a cross in - which is a huge risk to the defending side.
He can't do it for long, he runs out of breath after a while, but while he's fresh he can turn a game around I reckon.

As for losing the ball...I don't see that as a huge problem. If you push forward, you're gonna lost posession sometimes. It may also just be an issue of communication (this was only Odonkor's third cap I think) which will get better.
