We are over an hour yet before these two teams battle but it should be a good one.

This is going to be a closely decided match and hopefully France will do better this time around than they did in Korea/Japan.

Who is going to win this match?

man for man, but the French have more

oh wait, everyone is Swistzerland has a gun

so I guess its not the same when it comes to women and children.

Anyways, the point on the armies is moot, as the superior Swiss navy shall dominate the seas

Probably a draw. They (France) didn't do too well against them in the qualifiying group.

Swiss are defensive. Attacking on the break.

That's easy, just divide by 90 and you'll get an answer in goals/minute. In fact, let's allow 10 extra minutes, so your answer would just be 1 x 10^99 goals per minute. Unless, of course, you're using googolplex, in which case, it would be considerably larger.

But I think France and Switzerland both have defenses that are more capable than that.

The teamwork of the Swiss agains the flair of the French. The hot and humid conditions favour the French style I think. The Swiss are a hard working team, who depend on each other running all the time, whereas one moment of genius from Zidane or Henry can turn the game for the French.

However I am still going with 1 - 1 as a final result.

I don't know... the French are on a roll at the moment. If the Swiss break concentration, France could actually gain a couple of goals.

France are playing a more aggressive game at the moment, in terms of pushing... but the Swiss are being 'aggressive' in being unforgiving... that's - what... 9 fouls called against them now?

It's very close - but that French 'flair' you speak of has been getting more and more obvious over the last 15 minutes. I could easily see France going ahead after halftime.

I am surprised how many people honestly think that Switzerland will do equally well or better than the France. I mean, Swiss football? WTF?

Mind you, I also think it will be a draw, but just because I believe in having one surprising result a day. And I really, really dont see Croatia doing anything against Brazil.

But seriously, Switzerland is 35 in the FIFA rankings, which is (I think) their highest ranking ever!!! They tend to...er....well, kinda suck...

Of course I HOPE Switzerland wins, but that is just because they play against the French. And nobody likes the French.

Well - the statistics make the two teams fairly well matched.

7 meetings... 2 draws, 2 Swiss wins, 3 French wins.

This game - possession - 50% France:50% Switzerland. France have had three real 'shots on goal', Switzerland have had two.

FIFA rankings aren't worth the paper they are written on.

FIFA rankings aren't worth the paper they are written on.

While that is a very true statement, we are comparing the following teams here:

A) The World Champion of 1998, one of the contenders for the title (most bookies give about 1:12 for France, large football nation

against

B) A mediocre football country who have never really performed on any international tournament and whom are quote at about 1:250 to actually win the tournament. In fact, most bookies give odds they dont have much of a chance to make it to the next round.

I mean, seriously.

But anyway: GO SWITZERLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But - we aren't talking about winning the tournament, right here... we are talking about the fact that - historically - Switzerland and France are actually pretty well matched... and, 70 minutes into THIS game, they are STILL well matched.

We still might see a 0-0 draw, here.

Indeed - just a few minutes ago - Gygax almost put Switzerland ahead.

Bookies don't affect the outcome. FIFA rankings are just numbers.

Games get won or lost, by the play of the teams... and it looks like it is swinging back in favour of Switzerland.

Well it ended in deadlock, just as the two qualifying games between these two teams did.

A point about the comparison you make.

Tradition and history do not play the game. The current players, the current teams are what matters. France in 1998 had a magnificent team, most of whom have since retired. Switzerland have a strong young team that are on the way up. Too often here in Brazil, I hear commentators saying that Vasco or Flamengo will win due to the tradition of the club - only to have them lose to a newer team that is currently better.

Saying that France should win as they have a better history would be like saying that Chelsea have to lose next time they play Accrington Stanley. After all, Accrington Stanley were one of the best clubs in the world in the 1890s and Chelsea didn't even exist.

What is the referee smoking on that yellow to Zidane?

Justice. Zidane niggles. He pushes the line on everything, he is one of the players that I have seen get away with things, unpunished, that would earn other players an early bath. As the referee told him to await his signal to restart, and he didn't, then that is dissent and an automatic yellow card.

Having said that the ref was very inconsistent. The refereeing in this World Cup has been very strange so far.
