I believe I'm not going on too much of a stretch here when I say: the odds are that Italy's the one.
they dont have to beat italy, they have to beat ghana, and at least tie italy, then hope the czech beat italy, then they'll be tied and Goal Diff will come in, so pretty much ignore everything i just said  US needs to beat italy, or italy needs to give up a bunch of goals to the czech to outdo the US's self massacure
and yea, if they US aren't on their A-game, they might as well give up

There are probably some 16 other matches before this one. Don't get impatient to be eliminated.

I agree with you on there being too many commercials, but I want to at least be entertained when the game is on. Not see pass....pass....pass...stolen....pass...pass....pass.... for 45 minutes.

That's quite wrong. I'm not an avid fan of football, but i can easily sit through a match without getting bored- especially if something like the worldcup is at stake. More goals =/= more interesting.

I have to say there is a certain amount of charm to the naivety with which some a lot of Americans are viewing this tournament, I don't mean that condescendingly, it's quite refreshing.
Whereas most of us in Europe have grown up on a diet of football, in the US "soccer" only just seems to be off. In that respect I would imagine that most Americans would know more or less as much about the tactical complexities and general nature of the game as I would about American football, i.e. not a lot.
As countries go the US seems pretty insular and the majority of its citizens rarely feel inclined to look beyond it's borders, as a result you end up with a nation where a substantial people think the US have a shot at winning the world cup and were blissfully unaware that both the Czechs and the Italians have vastly superior teams. But yet there was an almost boyish innocence to the way they viewed the tournament, and that's the kind of attitude which, in part, really makes the World Cup the truly wonderful tournament that it is.

That's because you don't understand football and don't appreciate the skills involved.

it wasn't the rankings that gave us confidence, cause everyone knows the rankings are a sham, it was the combination of nearly beating Germany in 02 and then winning CONCACAF in qualifying, added to the vast amount of skill on the team. And then they go and rip our hearts out by not even showing up to play and turning a difficult task in advancing through this group to near impossible. Americans need to put all hopes away until after the Italy game, and then only our hopes can be rekindled if we manage a win.

Absolutely agree. Today's Italy vs. Ghana match was a tight game (well, the second came late, so it was tight until then), but it was easily the best game I've seen so far, in my opinion - and I've seen all the games so far. The skill involved in the footwork alone is amazing. In fact, I'm far more likely to lose interest in a game like basketball, where points are scored left, right, and centre. I can barely sit for twenty seconds through a basketball game without something being sunk, and where's the fun in that? At least in football, every goal is some special worth celebrating.
By the by, I'm behind Italy all the way - hope they cream the US. And the Czechs, actually. :p Forza Azzurri! Forza Itaaaaalia!
uh...not much to say here. As an American, I'll just read up on the news to see the score at one glance, and not watch my nation's team get pummelled for 90 minutes.

Australia's another minnow in the World Cup, it's been 32 years since we've quallifed to play in it.

But how was that win last night against Japan. 3 - 1
And we managed to score all 3 goals in the last 8 minutes. Couldn't believe it.

Quite a few of the US team play in Europe, so the footballing world knows about them. In addition some parts of the world have the doubtful privelege of receiving the occasional MLS match via ESPN. (They seem to think it is a useful filler for Latin America for example). AS such we have a pretty good idea of the level of the US play, and to be honest, what they did today/yesterday (depending on where you are) is pretty close to the limits of their ability.
Remember that most soccer skills require control of the ball which takes half a second or so to establish, time that is not available at an international or top European level. The US players do have some skills, and are appreciated in Europe as good, hard working players, but they simply were never given the chance to display the sort of skills you wanted them to show.
The difference between the Ronaldinhos and Henrys of this world and Landon Donovan and Josh Wolf is in the ability to instantly control the ball that the big name European and South American stars have. You have to grow up with a ball at your feet to acquire this.

Baseball they have a forty five second break every five seconds. Football it's forty seconds for every fifteen seconds. Basketball is a break every minute or so. Hockey is good.
It will be between Italy and Czech. Ghana isn't too bad and will probably beat the US, who will be lucky to escape without three losses. Their ranking was ridiculously high and they will not measure up to their next opponents.
Italy always needs a scandal to galvanize themselves and the Czechs are, well, the Czechs. Always a good team. The third match should be interesting, provided the two don't overlook their next opponents.

But then, when you make an American Football thread, I don't spend my time writing messages about how much I hate American Football in there.
Just accept that Football is probably the world's most popular game, that the World Cup is the biggest event in that sport and that most of the world will be interested on some level - which will invariably include this forum.
