USA vs. Czech Republic

Well it is finally here. FIFA Ranked 5th USA takes on the team from the Czech Republic.

Who is going to win?

The Czechs, without too much problem at all. They are, after all, the FIFA no 2 ranked team, given that you put that much emphasis on the FIFA rankings.

i think its funny how espn and SI are pushing people to watch this match, or US soccer in the worldcup in general.

sadly, no one is going to care/watch this game. hell, japan/australia was a better match.

fifa rankings are bullshit. USA at 5th? please, they never play anyone.

I actually think that ESPN and SI are doing the right thing. In other countries, the games involving the national team are much more hyped than other matches. (You would not believe the hype here for Brazil vs Croatia tomorrow).

Part of the idea of the World Cup is to be nationalistic and support your team.

Having said that the USA are not that good a team, and certainly are not the fifth best in the world.

3:0 for Czech. I think they'll make the best achievement of the WC so far today.

As far as I remember, they had the 3rd place in the European Championship, just behind Portugal and Greece.

Indeed not. They're nowhere near fifth best, but they're improving steadily. I predict a 2-0 win for the Czech Republic. (I see the Czechs getting all the way to the semis.) A draw would be a surprise, but not a huge one.

The Czechs are clearly the better team, but the USians shouldn't be discounted as helpless.

Does the rest of the world even know that most of the US doesnt even know that an american soccer team exists. Nobody cares. Like we are completely apathetic. There are maybe 1 million out of 300 million who are actually looking foreward to the world cup. Easy. Sure, American players are SEEN as good because they all play in American leagues, and we all know that sucks. (Brad Friedel is an excellent Player though)

And how is american football a god game, the shows lasts 4 hours and the game last one, oh yeah, it's very tactical, get it over the line, You DONT EVEN HAVE TO GET IT DOWN!

What exactly is the benefit of being killed playing a SPORT? It does make it silly in a way.

I have played American Football (and Rugby Union) and still find Association Football fun to watch, more so than the American version. (Rugby Union may be the best spectator sport ever, but their world cup is not being played now.)

not the point...its not a "silly sport," its a hard game where you need more strength and endurance to fend off a 500 lb lineman so you gont get pummled into the dirt. Where as your "silly sport" all you have to do is runaway from david beckham.

No, it's nothing like that. First of all I wasn't saying American Football's not a sport, second of all baseball uses a proper ball. You know, a sphere. So the name is accurate.

American Football doesn't use a proper ball, so the name is inaccurate.

Well, if you find 10 seconds of action followed by 2 minutes of waiting around for the next 10 seconds of action interesting, then watch American Football all you want.

Personally, I prefer Rubgy Union over them all. 40 minutes of action, maybe punctuated with one or two 10 second stops, followed by a 10 minute half time, followed by another 40 minutes. Best spectator sport in the world.

Please people, let's not make this a Football (or soccer, if you must) vs. American Football discussion, you can do that in another thread, this is about the upcoming Czech Republic vs. USA match. If you don't like ASSOCIATION football, I don't see what you're doing in a thread about it. Anyway, association football IS more popular in the world than American football, so there. :p

Anyway, the Czechs were my favourite team in the EC 2004, they should've won it instead of Greece (but still good work from the Greeks). They should beat the USA, although I'm not familiar with the latter team. Let's hope for a riveting match.

And I reckon they will also manage to get a draw against the Czech, while the US and the Czech will be able to beat Ghana. Then finally, the only important match in this group is Italy-US: 2-0

Also:

The FIFA World Rankings aren't worth the paper they're written on. There are too many obvious discrepancies -- USA and Mexico ranked ahead of Italy, England, Germany, Portugal and Spain, for instance... Czech Republic #2 when they took second in their qualifying group... etc. -- for them to be taken seriously by any knowledgeable soccer fan.

Italy are among the favorites to win the World Cup. It would take a miracle for the USA to beat them. If the USA play like they did today, Italy will rape them.

The USA cannot lose another game if they want to get out of the tournemant, and barring major injuries to Italy's main players (although Italy's second team could have beaten us 2-0 today), we aren't going to be nearly good enough to beat Italy.

It was not a fluke, but the Czech team is one of the best in the world at the moment. They are likely to win the group ahead of Italy. I really don't see any chance of the USA making it out of the group phase, so you really should choose a second team to root for. (The czechs would not be a bad one at that)

I hope America (not that they will, there's no way they'll beat Italy) do better because then people in the US might realise what real football is. I'm also hoping for a US v Iran game although that would mean Iran doing well which I don't want.

I think you're reading far too much into the match. The major problem today was a lack of defensive concentration and a lack of fighting spirit. Don't mistake that for a lack of skill. I'm not one to tell you the U.S. is one of the best teams in the world, but we can compete with and beat anyone on our day. Let's see how the squad comes out against Italy. I think we have a good chance.
I personally think our media and pretty much everyone outside the Czech Republic has underrated the Czechs in a big way. People were buying into that propaganda the Czech management was putting out about how, "we're old and injured". The fact of the matter is that they're one of the most balanced teams in the world from what I can tell. I think this was our toughest match.
I'm hoping for a better effort and a win against Italy. That would really throw a wrench in the Group E works.

Spain vs Ukraine on Wednesday should be a good one. Spain are one of the top European sides, and the Ukraine were the first side from Europe to qualify. This should be the match that decides who finishes first and who finishes second in group H.

There are two different types of games tomorrow. Brazil vs Croatia should be comfortable for Brazil, and a chance for them to show off a little - might be fun - then there will be a tough match between two neighbours - France and Switzerland. This is likely to be a cagey affair, much more tactical and defence minded. Both are going to be worth seeing, but they will be very different.

I personally think our media and pretty much everyone outside the Czech Republic has underrated the Czechs in a big way. I can tell you that the Czech team is not underestimated in most of the world. They are on most pundits short list of teams for the semi-finals maybe further. It may have been your toughest match, but the difference between the Czech Rep and Italy in ability is a matter of opinion, and Ghana are not far behind. However we will all see. If the results could be decided by press or public opinion, there would be no need for the matches.

I'm just pointing out that it's the nature of the beast, much like the unending threads on politics. And, yeah, I think it's probably too much to ask of some people (particularly the US bashers). They just can't resist. That's why they pop into anything related to the US and try to slime the thread.

I suppose I am naive to believe that politics can stayed canned outside of sports...

That's probably why the separation of church and state really doesn't exist...

I suspect church and state separation is much easier than international sport and the national pride which brings in the politics...

Exactly so. Well put

Corneliu, that's really too much. The US has a chance, but Italy is the clear favourite.

I'm trying to be as impartial as possible here. The biggest problem the US football team has is that it is a bit... well, provincial. All the good and excellent teams are located somewhere else. You can't get better if for your usual opponents are Nicaragua or Haiti. South America has two excellent teams (Brazil and Argentina) and several good ones (Uruguay, Paraguay, Columbia). Europe also has some excellent teams and many good ones. North America has no excellent teams and just a few good ones. The competition is much less intense there, compared with Europe or South America. To give just an example, Romania defeated the Czech Repulic 2-0 and yet didn't qualify (we had a draw with Armenia which cost us two points). Unless the competiton in the CONCACAF area gets more intense, the US team has no chance in hell of becoming trully the 5th best team in the world.

Edit: and the only way I see the US winning is if Italy scores an early goal, then concentrates only on defending and makes a mistakes, thus getting a late goal in the match. So it certainly won't be 1-0 for America.

I admire your spirit... but "we can compete with and beat anyone on our day" would only be true if the opposition were NOT having 'their day'.

There are certain teams that 'have it', and certain teams that don't. Italy 'has it'. The US doesn't.

As an ex-Englishman, I have vague recollections that, once upon a time, England 'had it'. Now... not so much.

We just have to get used to the fact that, while it is nice of the World Cup hosts to let us come and kick a ball around in their backyard.. it's a kindness. The US is there as very much a second-tier team.

Well - it's true. The Czechs had a pretty good game, but nothing spectacular... it wan't 'their day' - put it that way. And they managed a 3-0 win.

Italy, on a bad day, are STILL one of the very top echelon of teams. The chances of the US beating them are 'fairly slim'.

If I were a gambling man, I wouldn't be putting anything on USA for the win.
