The World Cup is upon us and whether or not you are aware our first game is against the Czech Republic tommorrow. I have found myself strangley interested in the match. I actually watched Mexico play Iran. It was as boring as is normally stereotyped, but it did have its moments. Its better than golf, much much better than golf. So I will probably stay tuned and see who wins.

The Germany game was better. I think the important question is - is the USA team even going to make it through to the next round?

I want the US to beat mexico, more than anything. I don't care if we lose to the suckiest team, I want to beat Mexico.
Not bad

better than golf but not quite as good as bowling fishing 9 ball or poker.

A real nap-fest

A message for all americans planning on being interested in the World Cup: don't. Or at least, don't go down to the level where you can't go to the supermarket without pictures of Wayne Rooney leering at you at every aisle.

It's driving me to distraction, I havent been this cynical since the last General Election!

I'm not a soccer person, but from what I read they have a chance to at least make to the next round.

At least you guys have a team that advances a bit... I am from Canada... :(

Although despite the lack of direct connection to the WM, I have been following it semi-closely (Not as much as the Stanley Cup, but still I have watched a few games).

Well, they SHOULD beat Ghana... but they might not beat the Czech Republic, and they are going to get it handed to them by Italy.

The problem is - these other teams play Football, seriously - and the US just doesn't really have a world presence.

I think we need to beat our division before we get that chance. I'm not quite sure how the tournament works. I think we have games against the Czechs, the Ghanans and the [edit] Italians, not Brazil. I hope that we can at least get 2 wins out of that.

Lets beat all of them first and then the mexicans.

Mexico is actually in a pretty good group for it. Unfortunately, the US isn't so far above it's competition... indeed, we have one of the top contenders in our group... and it's not us.

i think you guys are being a bit too unfair to yourselves. More recently the US team has been climbing the ratings, and in one i saw you guys in the top 5 (ok 5th, but that still counts!), that rating was based on win losses ratios against who (as in the difficulty).

Mad but true.

Actually - it usually works out that one of the 'pick' teams is in each group, to maximise the odds that serious competition will follow the eliminations.

In Group E - unfortunately - the top team is Italy... that puts at least 8 teams 'ahead' of us.

I've watched every match so far and plan on watching all of them. With the growing amount of injuries to the Czech side and the scadal in Italy, the path to the 2nd round is paved and we merely have to play our game and we will advance. Hopefully we can win the group and not have to face Brazil in the next round.

I'm too lazy to click on over to the ABC website (sad aint it). Anyone know if ABC is going to televise the game tommorrow. All they have on Monday afternoon is crappy soaps and infomercials. The game would be a vast improvement.

Read an interesting article in the guardian. Basically said the US doesn't empahsise football because they cannot handle not winning at something. Seems reasonable when the baseball 'world series' has all of 2 countries in it and apparently the odds of the US team winning are 1/80 *shrugs*.

Football doesn't divide nicely into marketable sectors with friendly advertising space, either.
