Proud to be human?

I must say, for many years, in fact most of my short life as it stands, I have not been.

The constant bloodshed and the actions towards other humans had bought me to such a conclusion, as I am sure it did for many of you. However, my view has changed this morning. Here I am bright and early getting ready for a band practice, and 15 mins ago I was watching the news over a nice bowl of cereal. They were interviewing an English family who went to the see the world cup game against Paraguay yesterday. They said they couldnt get seats anywhere in the stadium but the Paraguay area, dressed in England jerseys.

They didnt say so, but Im sure they were a bit frightened. However, this is the bit that made me proud to be human. "The Paraguay fans were so friendly and welcoming, talking to us and wanting to make us feel like one of them."

Struck a heartstring? It did with me. But then.. "Its what the world cup is all about, what makes it so great. All the different people from around the world, merging in one place and sharing the experience."

I am proud to be human for the first time.

I am proud to be human for the first time.

I'm glad to hear it. I've had many of those moments in life, some small and some great, but each one brings a measure of hope to my world. :)

Yahyah.

I love stuff like that. I just wish that this unity could be managed in more than just the bloody World Cup and the Olympics. Why can't people realize that we're all human and killing each other over stupid differences like religion, race, sexual orientation, or what have you is just...well...stupid?

That happens to me sometimes... then the shittiness of humanity overwhelms it again...

Sorry.

I've never had a moment like that. I have no pride in being human. In fact, I hate humanity. I think it needs to be destroyed.

In fact, stories like that make me wanna beat a baby's head in with a red-hot iron bar.

I agree that in the whole, Im still not proud. But right now, I am! We are still killing each other, but if English fans (stressing the English due to everyones apparent hate for our sterotypical yobbish behaviour) can sit in the opposition stands and be welcomed with open arms, its a step in the right direction.

Think of it as an army marching into enemy territory with a peace treaty and not being fired upon, but being welcomed for their peace. I know it wouldnt happen, dont be stupid, but its that kind of idea.

No. Thats still one small army in one small war, probably somewhere inconsequential to the international community as a whole. It wouldn't be much. Against all of humanity? That is nothing.

I'm not especially proud to be human, but I am pretty happy with the human race in general.

The part I don't like is everyone is so eager to fark all the farking time. Everything, everywhere. I find even I am affected by this as I walk down the street or browse on the Internet seeing girls do their gig, their baiting dance, their lure. I wish the mating instinct wasn't so damned strong and the mating season limited, like the Vulcans' Pon Farr. Further, I would wish that people DID need a license to procreate. If there is anything that we have done that ever needed regulation, it would be procreation. People feel they are a success just because they managed to bring another person into their usually miserable life (really, how happy can you be if you consider becoming pregnant to equate to making you a success in life?).

However, the part I am quite fond of is that no human group has ever given up completely.

None whatsoever.

The slaves rebelled (some in small ways), no occupying force has ever succeeded (invasions like the white invasion of America doesn't count, after all they killed most Indians and the rest merged into the society. Indians are not considered second-class citizens). The Aborigines in Australia formed a powerful lobbying group and have managed to preserve their culture. The only part I'm not seeing is the weak of the more backward societies (notice I didn't say cultures). This includes women, children, mentally and physically feeble, so on and so forth.

At the end, we really have nothing we can compare ourselves against. If whales and dolphins are really as intelligent as us, we can't adequately compare our society to theirs as we have no common communication medium and they lack usable manipulating appendages (thumbs, fingers). This is why I hope to retain conciousness and coherent thought when we meet the first alien civilization (formally, at least). I want to know, for sure, that we are not alone in our imperfection. That we are not a failure as a species. That we are not the lazy, violent, psychopathic, beautifully insane virii that we make ourselves out to be.
