The Transvestite's room is down the hall...

I just saw a sound bite on it on SNL, and it appears that one city is considering legislation that would require many public facilities to have three bathrooms - men, women, and transvestites. Of course, they pointed out the humor of it by creating a pictograph which was very disturbing.

Opinions on requiring transvestite bathrooms?

(No I don't remember where, and I as of yet have not located an appropriate news article on the subject. I'm still looking.)

I dislike the idea. I think it would only create an uncomfortable enviroment for the transvestites. People would see them go in there, and perhaps make fun of them and harrass them.

If such a legislation were to pass, I would venture to guess the first city to do it would be Toledo, Ohio.

Was it Toledo discussing the legislation? :D

While I respect the idea, I think it's overall unnecessary. Until we have a truly significant portion of the population that is gender queer(All the various mutations, including transvestites, would be included here) then it's actually quite wasteful, fiscally speaking.

That's what I was thinking. It seems to me that if by providing a service for a group you actually create problems for them, you should just refrain from providing the service.

This reminds me of a time when me and some freinds were at one of the local bars.
We came in more than a little high already, and I had had a few Woodchuck ciders in no time flat.

Well, after a while, I felt nature call, and lets just say it wasnt #1.
So I wandered into the bathroom, sat down, and proceed to give anal birth to the devil.

I apparently had been eating toxic waste for lunch, and lets just say the stench was so bad, if I ever write an autobiography, im dedicating a chapter to it.

"Chapter Three: The Evil that Came From My Ass."

Anyways, while doing by business, I happen to glance over at the wall, and noticed the usual graffitti was....different..more feminine sounding.
Perhaps some gay man had decided to declare his love of certain actions to the public via the bathroom wall..

On the way out, I noticed I had taken a crap in the womens bathroom.

Heh....whadda ya do?

In Australia they now build unisex public toilets. I guess unisex translates as all sex, so even alien visitors can use them. (Although I wouldn't want to use the toilet after a Vogon had backed one out.)

But urinals are so much more convenient (and space-efficient) for men. And most men wouldn't want random women to be able to see them at the urinal. Perhaps having a urinal room off to the side of the cubicle room?

no reason why you can't just have a seperate area for the urinals in the same room. it could be just like a cubicle but bigger and with urinals instead of crappers. i honestly don't think i'd be too bothered using a urinal in sight of a girl, can't see what the problem would be. does anyone really care when a girl infiltrates the gents at a club for a laugh? it happens all the time at my work and the girls always get chucked out by the bouncers but i've never heard of anyone actually expressing concern about it happening.

Stalls o thr right, urinals on the left and condom and tampon dispensers against far wall. Never heard anyone complain. Personally I'm not bothered when the cleaning lady comes in while I'm using the urinals, but I can see some people might be. And there's still the argument that urinals are much more space efficient, allowing the toilets ('bathrooms', as they say in America) to serve more people with the same area.

The idea of a urinal is that it's a lot faster.

This is good, especially for concerts. Most people only go in to pee after all.

Therefore, by having a urinal, more women will be able to use the cubicles and everything will go smoother and faster.

Build more cubicles instead of one big urinal that takes up 30% of the room despite hardly ever being used at full capacity, maybe?

Personally, I don't see any difference in the time investment from pissing in a bowl as compared to pissing on a wall, either.

Every concert I've been to has had full usage of the urinals and partial usage of the cubicles, to the point that the women go from the women's bathroom to the men's.

So, more urinals = more cubicles for the women = less waiting time for the women. Except when we want to do more than just shake our willies.

3 urinals per cubicle = 3 men instead of 1 man peeing = 2 cubicles not being taken up by men.

I'm talking about large-scale usage here. If you can't see the economies of scale at work, then that's a bit sad.

Not only that, but urinals use less water per flush = good.

The women will all go into the unisex bathroom because there is no more room in the women's bathroom, the men will go in the unisex bathroom because they don't want anyone to think that they are uncomfortable with their masculinity, and the transvestites will wind up going in the men's bathroom because it's the only place left that isn't full. Finally, someone will just say "screw it" and then all the bathrooms will be unisex.

We cannot all use the same toilet! Women don't understand the etiquette of mens' toilets - women come into the toilet to socialise, they swarm around chatting to eachother, in their shrill womenine voices, hell, I heard that they even talk over the cubicle walls to eachother whilst taking a leak! All of these things are unacceptable and are detrimental to the process of male pissing.

PS. The tone of this is in jest - but the jist is intended.
PPS. The point of urinals is that they use something like 5% of the water of a toilet.

Peeking at what? A closed stall door? It might help lessen perversions if people got used to it. There is nothing going on in a ladies room that is not going on in a men's room. We all have the same bodily functions and it would be healthier if unisex bathrooms brought this home to everyone.

As for those who state it might lead to a rise in rapes, I ask how could having more people using the same facility make it easier to rape a woman? Surely you do not suggest that erely being in a room with a lady using a toilet would incite men to such behavior?

No.. I said my tone was in jest, my reasons are sincere.

Where I'm from men need a certain level of security and confidence in their surroundings in order to releive themselves. A strict routine of etiquette is drilled in from an early age to encourage complete silence, and evasion of eye-contact within a 3ft-radius of a fellow pissee.

Women, through no fault of their own, have no experience of this and are thus disruptive to the environment that men have created for themselves.
