Video games causing crimes?

With all the bills in the state senates that are trying to stop minors from buy or renting M rated games I want your opinons on the subject.

...The parents should be the ones looking at the box and realizing the M means "17+". Not to mention Video games aren't causing crime. If they're related at all, they're reducing it...Or reducing teenage pregnancy, something like that.

If parents and other adults took responsibility for what their kids bought and played, then these bills wouldn't exsist.

According to the FBI, youth crime is at the lowest rate in history in the US. Video Games are not causing crime. And if they pass that bill, I'm going to probably be breaking the law a lot...

I will not respect a law that is directly against the constituition. That document overrides any law these bastards pass. I will stand by my right as a US citizen. They can throw me in jail, if they like: but that bill is unconsititutional, and I will sue the bastards.

Hell no! Congress is just looking for a scapegoat for the increasing violence in the States, and video games happen to be it. I don't know if you've seen the children that play video games 24/7, but they do not look like the type to be commiting crimes. Maybe congress should look at their own welfare system for the answer to preventing violence.

24/7? Are they on drugs or what?

Anyway, I like that parents who allow their kids to constantly play videogames also overfeed them. In case they go on a murdering rampage I should be able to outrun them easily.

The standards for videogames should be the same as standards for any media - whether it's a magazine, movie, or mega man. The universal rating system should be easy to understand - "R" for restricted is just as good as "M" for mature, but they should just decide on one. Most importantly, the average level of sex or violence should be the same in a pg-13 movie or a pg-13 (now known as 'T") game.

all video games do is desencitize the violent crimes no diffrently then then watching a violent movie to many times. video games shouldn't cause urges to commit a crime for the average person, but there are those special cases when people see things like these:mp5: :sniper: :mp5: :sniper: and want to go rob a convienient store. so the new restraints wont keep the right people away and are useless.

Video games do not cause crimes. Slack-jawed morons, criminals, some mentally ill people, and unsocialized kids whose parents put them in front of an expensive video game system to be raised in lieu of actually parenting them cause crimes.

And then lawyers get rich trying to blame the game makers for the failure of the individual and/or his parent.

And then the moral majority causes a tempest in a tea pot wailing over godlessness in games.

I believe that (and yes, I am an avid gamer) you should be within the agegroup of the rating of the game that you are attempting to buy. If this means flashing ID when buying a game, so be it. Ratings are there for a reason, just as ratings for movies are. Parents then, have full discretion in what they are letting their child/young adult play.

If someone has already given this opinion, then good for you! I am too lazy to read through a thread...yes, even one as short as this...*sweatdrop*

You're "too immature" to buy a beer until 21, or a cigarrette until 18.

Statutory laws are uniquely stupid, in that they try to make broad generalizations about people based on age...but we've been doing it forever.

I would think the least of your problems would be worrying about getting a copy of Resident Evil XII.

I sense a misunderstanding here. I'm fine with my parents being able to regulate what I can buy and such (they're always with me when I buy video games) but I am not okay with the government telling me that I cannot play a certain even with my parents permission.

And if those bastards get their hands on the internet, well...my parents are lawyers...and they know many other lawyers. One way or another, there will be hell to pay (no, I'm not one of those idiots who has a myspace account. Those idiots are going to ruin the internet for everyone, I swear.)

Ah, well that is reasonable. It makes perfect sense for parents to be allowed buy M rated games(or any rating for that matter) for their child/ren if they consider them to be mature enough. Considering that they'd be the only ones who'd know if their child was mature enough.

No, videogames don't cause crime. No scientific evidence exists to that effect, nor does logic support it.

On a related tangent - I'm getting sick and tired of the government senselessly regulating the activities of 'children.' Though not a drop of evidence exists to support the idea that nudity or violent images actually harm 'children,' the state has not ceased in its crusade to 'protect the children from these harmful influences.' Though there exists no logical argument for why, at 18, one is capable of deciding who runs the most powerful nation on earth(and die for that nation) but not ready to enjoy a glass of wine or a cold beer, it is firmly illegal to drink until one is 21. Nor can anyone explain why at 16 I have the capacity to drive a 1000-lb vehicle powered by controlled explosions going 65 mph, but I lack the faculty to decide whether I wish to fornicate with another individual.

It's highly frustrating. What I wouldn't give for an iota of sense in government...

Video games don't cause crime, any more than role playing games, movies, religions or music cause crime. If you are angry, unbalanced, and generally looking for an excuse then those things can provide a focus, but happy, well-adjusted people won't become violent criminals just because the play a particular game, belong to a certain religion, or listen to a song.

If they are really looking for correlations with violent crime, they don't have to look for things as obscure as video games. What do more than 90% of violent criminals have in common? Testicles. Obviously testicles should be outlawed immediately. :p

If I recall correctly, this game would prohibit anyone from providing games for underagers, even their parents. Not going to be much way to inforce that (but just in case, I won't buy Xbox Live so they can't, ehem, watch out for my safety).

Still, that is only going to affect minors who live independently, like emancipated minors (a very small group) and young university students living away from home. As long as there are adults living in the home, most of the junk in the home is considered to belong to them, not to the kids.

Imagine the scene: Police in full riot gear break down the door to your house, they herd your family into the kitchen, pass your dad the search warrant, and then start tearing the place up. Sure enough, they find a game console with a Mature rated game next to it. In a menacing tone of voice, the officer in charge asks, "Who does this belong too?" Your mom answers, "That belongs to my son Timmy, I gave it to him for Christmas." And then the police drag your mom off to jail.

Really?

If the crime rate ever gets so low that local police forces are actively hunting down kids who own mature rated video games, and the people that bought those games for them, I'd just be thankful that there aren't any real crimes around any more.

GTA cited as car-chase motive
New York man gets two charges after car chase with cops; thought he could outrun police because he did it in Grand Theft Auto.
From the life-does-not-always-imitate-art department, an Albany, New York, resident was sentenced to jail for second-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault, reports the online branch of Capital 9 News.
Tyrone McMillan was taken into custody last year after leading police on a car chase when officers attempted to pull him over for a parole violation. After slamming into two cars, McMillan told police that he thought he could outrun them because he played games from Rockstar's controversial Grand Theft Auto franchise.
McMillan, in his 30s, apparently thought that his gaming skills translated to the real world. His experience navigating the fictional streets of San Andreas and Vice City with a PlayStation 2 controller led to a 55-minute real-life car chase, part of which had his girlfriend's 11-year-old daughter and her 10-year-old cousin in the backseat. The girls leapt from the moving car while it was turning onto a highway.
But not even hours of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney could help him today, as a court judge slapped him with two concurrent seven-year jail terms. After serving time, he will be on parole for 10 years.
This isn't the first time Rockstar's top-selling franchise has been part of a criminal case. Devin Moore stands trial for the slayings of three Alabama police officers, an act which prosecuting attorneys say was influenced by playing Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Game blamed for hammer murder

Stefan was repeatedly battered and stabbed by his older friend
The parents of a boy who was murdered with a claw hammer by a friend have blamed a violent video game which the teenage killer was "obsessed" with.
Warren Leblanc, 17, repeatedly stabbed 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah after luring him to a Leicester park to steal from him on 27 February.

He pleaded guilty to murder at Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday.

Stefan's mother described Leblanc, who confessed to police moments after the assault, as "inherently evil".

Video game 'obsession'

Stefan's mother, Giselle, a research nurse, had to leave court when the evidence in the case became too harrowing.

Following the hearing she said her son's killer had mimicked a game called Manhunt, developed by Edinburgh-based Rockstar North, in which the players score points for violent killings.

Leblanc armed himself with a claw hammer and a knife
Manhunt was banned six months ago in New Zealand by censorship officials.

Mrs Pakeerah said: "I heard some of Warren's friends say that he was obsessed by this game.

"To quote from the website that promotes it, it calls it a psychological experience, not a game, and it encourages brutal killing.

"If he was obsessed by it, it could well be that the boundaries for him became quite hazy."

Mrs Pakeerah, 36, called for violent video games to be banned.

Covered in blood

She said: "I can't believe that this sort of material is allowed in a society where anarchy is not that far removed.

"It should not be available and it should not be available to young people."

I don't play these games but if they are influencing kids to go out and kill people then you don't want them on the shelves

Patrick Pakeerah, victim's father

Leblanc, of Braunstone Frith, Leicester, persuaded his victim to go to nearby Stoke Woods Park, known locally as The Dumps - to meet two girls.

The court heard how he armed himself with a knife and claw hammer to carry out the attack.

He confessed to the killing moments later when he was found covered in blood by two police officers.

Outside court Stefan's father, Patrick, said: "They were playing a game called Manhunt.

"The way Warren committed the murder is how the game is set out - killing people using weapons like hammers and knives.

"There is some connection between the game and what he has done."

Game ban

Echoing his former partner, the civil servant said: "I don't play these games but if they are influencing kids to go out and kill people then you don't want them on the shelves."

When police discovered Stefan, they found he had sustained horrific and fatal injuries.

Giselle Pakeerah has called for a ban on violent video games

The boy had been hit so hard with the hammer he had suffered deep cuts to his head and neck. His head had been fractured in several places.

He had multiple stab wounds, with the knife being plunged so deep that it had caused serious injuries to his kidney and liver.

A spokesman for the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers' Association said: "We sympathise enormously with the family and parents of Stefan Pakeerah.

"However, we reject any suggestion or association between the tragic events and the sale of the video game Manhunt.

"The game in question is classified 18 by the British Board of Film Classification and therefore should not be in the possession of a juvenile.

"Simply being in someone's possession does not and should not lead to the conclusion that a game is responsible for these tragic events."

Judge Michael Stokes QC said Leblanc had carried out "a brutal, cold-blooded murder" and could expect a life sentence.

Sentencing was adjourned for reports.

I believe that the parents and the people who take video games too seriously are responsible. Parents who let there minor children buy mature rated games should think more about what they're doing. I love video games but after playing them, such as grand theft auto, i've learned that they are a little too violent for a 7 or 8 yr. old kid. The games probably exposes that kid to different situations which he/she will think is alright to be doing.

Yes, but (and here you'll notice I've been hanging around the serious threads too much today) since the suicide by the detainees at Guantanamo is an act of war, therefor the suicide of any emo would be a crime. And if said suicide is done after listening to emo music (Like Britney Spears, whom could make anybody emo) then... Playing emo music would perhaps be seen as an act of terror? Yeah! With all the bills in the state senates that are trying to stop minors from buy or renting M rated games I want your opinons on the subject.

I'm majoring in psychology. I have yet to meet a fellow psychologist that agrees with these alarmists that video games are a direct cause of violence. If anything, it's the examples of behaviour demonstrated by the childrens' family that would determine it. If you grow up with parents that don't teach you how to control yourself, or they lash out, you'll grow up along the same lines, most likely. People need to stop blaming the games for a moment and quite possibly blame the parents. Granted, I don't think exposing young children to violent and/or lewd games a wise choice, but I do not think it will necessarily bring about those same behaviours.
