Saying "My girl"?

Is that considered bigotist chauvinistic or something?

Who got offended by that?

I guess if you used it exclusively, rather than, say, her name.. it might be seen as a bit unusual.. but I don't think it's offensive in itself.

Well, the other two guys she's been seeing may get upset.

Might be a bit possessive, but I doubt it'd bother anyone but a militant feminist.

"My girl" means nothing, they're just words. It only has meaning when you put them into context.

Bah, she digs me.

I swear Swedish girls are so hot. And this one likes Guns too.

It's not really offensive. Just some girls prefer not to be considered belonging to someone. Like my favourite superhero - Polaris. She's a feminist mutant with the power to control magnetism and metal (like Magneto).

But deep down, doesn't Polaris really want to be dominated and owned?

Perhaps. She REALLY got pissed when Havok dumped her (on their wedding day). Whenever Iceman or Havok referred to her as "my girl" she gets mildly pissed.

Nothing wrong with saying "my girl" if the girl concerned doesn't mind...

S**** anyone else.

I, personally, don't have a problem with being called someone's girl. It's the equivalent of saying "my man" which (I don't think) guys think of as a bad thing.

When "My girl" stops being a referrence to the fact that she is your girlfriend and turns into who she is, then it becomes problematic and offensive.

Trust me. I got pissed when people referred to me as someone else's girlfriend and did not know my name. VERY pissed. The person knew my name the next time he saw me, even though I didn't say what it was that time (I had said it before).

I guess some people find "my girl" sounding like the girl is someone's property.

Then again on the other side of things, what it means is that she's the only one for you...

Technically, since you are in a relationship, your affections etc are for that one person only, so in a way you belong to that person....tough idea, I know.

There's nothing offensive about it. Nobody thinks that it is a proclamation that you own her.

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got so much honey the bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh.

I don't need no money, fortune, or fame.
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
with my girl.
I've even got the month of May
with my girl (fade, damn you, FADE!!)

Just because a Swedish girl is so hot does not mean that all of them are!

How did you find one in the US South?

Nothing wrong with saying "my girl" if the girl concerned doesn't mind...
And if she does, just teach her a lesson and put her in her place.

She actually lives up north along the canadian border. If things go good between us this semester I'll go up and visit her folks. She loves kids, goes to church regularly, isn't a raving lunatic, pretty hot, and doesn't mind guns at all.

Arr m'lady, how be thou? [pirate voice]

And if she does, just teach her a lesson and put her in her place.

Personally, I don't like being refered to as 'my man', so I'd never call someone 'my girl'. It just reeks of possessiveness, and that iritates me like sand rubbing against the gooch.

People really get hung up on the semantics of words. I once had the wife of the governor tell me it was improper to call a group of females "ladies". She said ladies indicated that they were weak and needed a "lord" to protect and care for them. According to her it was more proper to use the term "women".
