This is probably a silly question but why do severla people insist on typing 'G-d' instead of 'God' I thought it was just on this website but I was searching the web and found lots of people do it I was wondering why?

It's mostly a Jewish custom, but some Christians who want to act like they care about the Old Testament do it, too. The name of God is supposed to be holy and you're not supposed to defile it, or erase it or anything like that. Seeing as it is so easy in electronic media to efface the term, they don't write it and so avoid the occurrence.

Because they need a new keyb-ard. Their '-' key is -bvi-usly br-ken.

maybe theyve lost the O key off their keyboard. That would be awful. Not as bad as the E though.

Fass has it right. Its a Jewish custom to avoid defiling the Name.

It originally applied only to the actual Name, but many Jews today carry it over into English. I'm not sure if there is an actual halachic ruling against typing 'God' in English or not.

I thought that could be a possibility but I noticed they could put o's in other words.
I had a feeling it might be some kind of 'the name of God is holy' stuff buthow do they know that god's name is God anyway? (wooops there's already been a thread on this, better not start the whole what's God's name thing again)

The Torah tells us what God's name is. If its true, accurate, etc. is a whole other issue. However, the Torah contains what Jews believe to be the Name of God, as well as the prohibition on defiling the Name. So thats where it comes from.

That's quite simply:

G-d is the male version.

God is the female version.

God is the female version.

I was afraid of that

Is it 'I Am' or 'Yahweh' or neither?

Actually it's YHWH, the original Jewish alphabet does not have vowels.
So God becomes GD in some silly way ...
