Well, alright. It played in California, so unless there are posters in Hawaii it's pretty safe to go on about it...

I really liked this Doctor, it's really too bad-this new one, I don't know...I guess they went through the first one fast to establish the concept early. Or, you know, some other reason that everyone already knows about but me...

Interesting man kiss.

The flashing lights without the sound of "EXTERMINATE" was cool.

I like that the Tardis still 'flys' like it's being drug along on a string, flipping about...

A bit of a Deus Ex Machina ending. Somewhere I got the impression that there where going to be Cybermen in the final episodes (I knew that wasn't the case by last week, but anyway...)

Didn't you watch the 2nd episode? They have emotion inhibiter chips and a central nervous system. They don't feel emotion, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't feel pain. Maybe when they got seriously damaged, the chip broke.

I was actually a little disappointed by the latest incarnation of the Cybermen. I thought they were cooler when they made no noise.

I thought the new/alternative cybermen weren't too bad, and certainly an improvement on any of their post-Troughton incarnations, but for my money the best cybermen remain the original open/closed-mouth ones from the Hartnell era. I have nothing against camp, but cyberleaders doing groin thrusts with their hands on their hips as they declare things 'EXCELLENT', is just too much for me. It was kind of strange seeing a credit to the writer of Spare Parts as an inspiration on the cybermen two-parter, especially since Spare Parts was by a long mile a much, much better story.

Odd. My clear memory of the original cybermen is that they had no voice at all, which I found uniquely scary. But you're right, they did speak. I guess my personal emotional inhibiter of choice at that age, The Cushion, must also have been effective against sound waves.

Meh. I like the fact that the earliest versions do look fucked up, ugly and unfinished. The design of the alternative-cybermen is one which has been created by human artists and designers in the corporation, whereas the old ones were just something which a scientist concerned more with getting something working would throw together. Their lack of attractive aesthetic creates a stronger link to the whole debate about transplant culture and the mechanisation of the human, whereas the new ones just look too otherly. The first Hartnell cybermen were Frankenstein's monsters, whereas the Tennant cybermen were Metropolis.

Maybe this just reflects the difference in popular culture as far as the attitude to consumer uptake of new technology between the 60's and our current decade: technology is now embraced and desired, if only often for reasons of fashion or look. It is now sexy, whereas cutting edge technology of the 60's always had something clumpy, oversized, cumbersome and unfinished about it. Anybody want to draw a relation between the introduction of miniaturised production techniques in the Far East and the much more sleek designs of cybermen that we saw in the 70's?

Not that I know of, but he is set to star in the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485301/).

IMDB doesn't have him down in any of the current series (Well, it lists him as being in the one on recently, but he wasn't in it, so maybe he might be in a future one and there is a mistake).

-----

Personally I wasn't hugely impressed with the new Cybermen (bear in mind I haven't seen any of the old Doctor Who for the next part). They seemed to me to be a rehashing of the last season's Daleks.

Big boss robot (Robo-Lumic/Dalek Emperor), terminal catch-phrase (Exterminate, Exterminate/ Delete, Delete, Delete).

Maybe I was missing something, but I wasn't hugely impressed. Meh, gotta track down the old serials.

Though it did inspire a very good cartoon by Steve Bell.

2nd episode of the current season is pretty damn good. Bringing back some classic characters and I thought the story telling was pretty good. The series is darker, the background music is moodier. The acting got better and the story lines are awesome. Its all grown up, but I still like the corny previous 26 or so seasons.

I thought Christopher Eccleston did an excellent job as the Dr. He had this sarcasm that made him likable.

David tennant is ok but it was kind of like losing Tom Baker in the original run. You get used to an actor and how he does his lines and you hate to see a replacement.

Yes they will (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/). It looks like it's directed by Jon Favreau (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0269463/), directer of Made, Swingers and most recently Zathura. He's also directing Jon Carter of Mars (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401729/), which according to the trivia was going to be directed by first Robert Rodriguez before he quit the DGA over Sin City for some reason and then by Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow's Kerry Conran-who I think would have been a fantastic choice.

He look, I over answered a film question. Imagine...

Tom Baker is probably the most liked in the states because of how many years he was on in England. It translated to a lot of re-runs over here in the states. If you ask anyone that watched the show, most of them only knew Tom Baker. He was the first I remember watching and watched it for years before I knew there were more.

I just liked his style, plus he's a sentimental favourite as the first Doctor I saw. I caught up on the earlier ones (well, the episodes that still exist anyway) when they were aired here in the US, and while I really liked the Pertwee stories, Tom Baker is still my favourite.

(By various counts, the above "series one or two" could be identified as at least "series 27 or 28", by my reckoning. (

But in terms of "21st century Doctor Who" (post-Eccleston), it looks like you in the US are watching Series One, while Series Two is currently on show here in the UK.

(Quickly checking some sources, we're saw, yesterday in the UK, the 178th 'Story', and have already had maybe 340-odd 'pre millenium' episodes. Am I showing my geekiness yet? ;))

Actually, the better question is do you say "Reinos" for Spain and "Bundesrepubliks" for Germany. (As Spain is a Kingdom and Germany a Republic).

We are Americans, of the United States of America. There is no such thing as a USian. Not in common use, not in any media. We are states united (thus United States of America).

As for the rest of the continent, I've never heard of Canadians refer to themselves as otherwise, nor Cubans, etc. SOUTH Americans are from South America. If they wish to become Americans, come here (like so many do), or have their country join our Union. A Chilean is a South American, not a American. QED.

And I'd rather forget the Colin Baker years.

One of the ironies with Colin Baker is that despite the fact that his run on the series is almost universally hated, in the Big Finish audios of the four main characters who have played the doctor (the fifth through the eighth), it is in fact Colin Baker who shines best in that environment. It is sufficient to make you think that the problems during his run weren't his fault, but rather belonged to the producer.

I will say this for Colin: watching "Trial of a Time Lord" in one sitting is *Excellent*. Unfortunately, in half hour or so installments, it was only slightly better than watching Monty Python muted with Slovak subtitles. :(
