Brazilians are used to coming out on top in the World Cup - but not when it comes to drinking beer.
A poll published in a German newspaper on Friday (NZ time) had the five times world champions only 16th in a ranking of beer consumption among the 32 countries in the tournament.
The Czech Republic are top of the NZZ poll with 161 litres per person per year, followed by host nation Germany with 116 litres, England 101 and Australia 95.
Consumption in Brazil is 49 litres a year, the second highest in Latin America after Mexico.

Actually the second greatest sport, after sex, which is probably why we don't do so well at beer drinking - we're too busy. :p

Huh. 116 liters? That's less than one bottle a day.
Of course, I don't drink beer every single day, but when I drink beer it usually is more than enough to make up for the rest.

I can't speak from the most recent data, but I do remember an article comparing the per capita beer consumption rates that was posted in the teachers room at my last workplace. That listed the US as 5th behind the Czechs, Germans, Brits, and Aussies. They also listed individual stats for the US states with the higher rates. I'm proud to say that in my homestate of Texas, we out drink the Aussies (and those familiar with Texas' ethnic make up will understand).

The 2002 figures doesn't have the Czech Rep. Are we meant to believe that in 2002 they drank less than 29 litres per person and four years later they drink 161 litres each? What the hell happened there to turn them into such hardened drinkers?
