Aye, Poland should win it. They've got a stronger team. Probably with 2-3 goals I'd say.

YEs, when the Ecuadorians don't play 3km above sea level, they dont seem to be that good

Ecuador got the early goal I predicted, and now there will be no more scoring until Polands short fast shot soon after halftime. Later Ecuador will score the winning goal.

Ecuador have some nice strikers...they're really pushing the Polish defense. I predicted Ecuador to win 2-1, and I'm sticking with that.

Is Ecuador a good team? I mean, I know next to nothing about them.
The Gupta Dynasty
09-06-2006, 20:41
Moderately good. They, like most South Americans, play football as children and love it (I should know, one of my old high school coaches used to be from Ecuador).

Two early yellows set the tone for what should be a physical match.

The Gupta Dynasty
09-06-2006, 20:46
6-2? Your kidding. Look at the possetion percentage; it's 50-50. Anyway, for my running commentary: Poland should have tied 1-1. They should have got a free kick and the Ecuadorian goalie justmade huge mistake. Oh, wrll.

No. Poland is playing really slowly, defense is poopy and their offence has only very, very breif moments of competence.

Final Score - Ecuador: 2 Poland: 1

Watch these few minutes after halftime, Poland is going to score their first and only goal of the game from in close! Later, at the end of this bit, Ecuador will get a nice long shot in for the win.

That push in the 18th was a shocker and that wall was the biggest i have ever seen.

Ok, so from the first half we can know that the Ecuador keeper can't catch and hates crosses and doesn't like corners.

Poland can't cope with set pieces and don't pick up De La Cruz when he roames forward.

Still, its 50-50, but Ecuador lead with 9 shots overall 5 on target to Polands 1 shot on target and 2 off.

That said Poland have had 5 corners to 2 so if they can test the goalie more then I think they'll get a chance again, but they need to make it count.

10 fouls to Ecuador and 4 to Poland with 1 yellow card each. Not a bad game, pretty even, but Ecuador are just edging it, Poland seem a little toothless and need to push another striker on up front IMHO.

Yeah, the polish have opened terribly. I think they'll win though, as long as their coach goes down hard on them.

Well below average as a South American team.

They only qualified due to the altitude at Quito. Look at the distribution of points Home and away in qualifying.
Home 23 points
Away 5 points (3 of those being at La Paz - also at altitude)

Yes, they play football as kids and love it, but so do the Maltese.

Meh, South America rules as a football continent anyway. ;) But you're right.

Poland's opened a little better in the second half...they seem to be controlling the tempo a lot better, and are passing a good deal better two, though they need to improve their finishing skills if they are to win.

EDIT: As they just did. Nice shot.

IT'S OVER!!! Final Verdict: This is why we watch the game. Excitement, skill, and an element of the unexpected. Poland were obviously the more skilled team, but Ecuador came through with an early goal and played lockdown defense after that. Poland missed a few close chances in the final seconds, but that wouldn't have won the game for them. Ecuador played with heart and fire. My man-of-the-match award goes to the Ecuadorian Defense who played like I have never seen them before. Captain Ivan Hurtado lead by example. Overall, it was a well-played, well-reffed, game. Poland will go home disappointed, but Ecuador will know that they deserved what they got.

Well, the last 15 minutes or so of the second half anyway.

They had some great ball control throughout the second half, but on the whole you are right. However, I think that irrational outburst of shots near the end of the second half was due more to Ecuador's complacency, than to Poland's skill. Ecuador was more in the "yeah, we'll win anyway, let's relax" mentality, which left some openings in their previously unbroken defense.

True, I think, at one point, I even saw all 11 Ecuadoran players packed into their own area. Yikes. Talk about collapsing the defense.

I thought so. They didn't hold the shot long enough for me to get a count. I saw it, though, and thought, "WTF? Do they really?!?" Then they cut away from the shot. In my nearly 30 years of playing and coaching football, I've never been with a team that's done that.

They were nothing whatsoever like the Polish side that played in the qualifiers, nor even the side that beat Ecuador 3 - 0 in Barcelona last November.

But congrats to Ecuador, who now have to plan on how to beat Costa Rica to qualify for the last 16. (Where it is most likely that they would meet England).

Ecuador were the better team last night. Ecuadors defensive game was well played and in my opinion deserved the win. Told ya the world cup was known for its upsets.
