A guy claims that the funniest joke in the world was written by Spike Milligan during his Goon Show days in 1951. (I've never heard of Spike or his show). The joke goes like this.

Two hunters are out in the woods in New Jersey when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed.

The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps 'My friend is dead! What can I do?' The operator says: 'Calm down, I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.' There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says 'OK, now what?'

Now clearly it's a great joke. It even has a reference to New Jersey, which tends to improve everything. But you'll notice the joke involves one of the hunters "whipping out his phone". Did they even have cell phones in the 1950s? If not, I doubt that joke is that old.

The sketch is this:

Michael Bentine: I just came in and found him lying on the carpet there.

Peter Sellers: Oh, is he dead?

Bentine: I think so.

Sellers: Hadn't you better make sure?

Bentine: All right. Just a minute.

Sound of two gun shots.

Bentine: He's dead.

*No mention of a mobile phone. It could have been set in a house or something.

Well, its in your link ;)

He wrote it and the others did it. It has probably been updated and modernised as the decades passed.

Either that or its the Illuminati again.

Spike Milligan and the Goon Show are excellent; if you've never heard of them you should look them up. The BBC do some CDs if you feel like splashing out.

For shame, for shame, for shame.
You've never heard of Spike, or the Goon show?

I have suddenly lost a great deal of respect for you DCD.

Do yourself a favour and find a copy of "The essential Spike Milligan". It's as good a start point as any.

To say the man was a comic genius would be an understatement.

One of those glorious moments of NS General - I'm reminded of discovering that Letila had never heard Woodt Guthrie.

Does sound a bit suspect, but here's an interesting story for you: under Communist rule in Albania the dictator imposed a blanket ban on all western TV and radio etc, however he made one exception - he was a massive fan of Spike Milligan (British comedian). Anyhow, when the regime collapsed and they opened up their borders to the western world, it turned out that Spike Milligan was a massive celebrity with an enormous cult status.

It sounded more interesting in my head, I guess it's how you tell em.
