Across the Middle East, a number of factors will continue to feed a mood of resentment towards the West in general and the U.S. in particular: "the injustice done to the Palestinians, the cruelty of continued sanctions against Iraq.... the repressive and corrupt nature of US-backed Gulf governments." 7 A surgical strike might assassinate Ben Laden and his high command. But as long as these major irritants continue, other terrorists will rise to take his place. Al Qaeda is not an organization; it is a philosophy.

But its not that, they hate our freedom!

Is that serious quote?

'Ben' Laden sounds a lot more cosy and friendly, after all.

Well, Its from an essay which quoted this article (http://www.csmonitor.com/2001/0927/p1s1-wogi.html). The writer made a typo.

I told you to read Zangi, and all of Bin Laden's work - not just the parts you like.
]
Bin Laden quotes Zangi, and uses him as a reference for "how to fight" and what rules to use in war.

And Zangi says "blow anyone up who likes freedom?"

And Zangi says "blow anyone up who likes freedom?"

More likely he says: kill anyone who gets in the way of Islamic Government Everywhere.

Which means pretty much the same.

Tell you what.

So many of you think that it's easy to dismiss things that are in books, especially historical references.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the Arabs are so backwards that little of their historical reference material (primary source) is available on the Internet.

They don't have any entries in Project Gutenberg, for instance.

So, like me, you'll have to buy the book and read it yourself.

But, be assured, Osama talks about Zangi, and references him directly.

Zangi made the rules of war for Sunnis fighting in the First Crusade - and delineated the nature of the conflict which continues to this day. It defines the worldview of Osama today.

Obviously none of us are going to go and buy this book because of the fear that security services will mark us down as terrorists follow us all the way from the bookshop and then shoot us repeatedly from close range as soon as we try to board a tube.

so please can you tell us in here what his rules of engaement are.

No, because someone like Muravyets will say that my translation is a lie, or I omitted some detail which makes me a liar. Basically, better to trust your own eyes.

For those who want the short form, you can buy The Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades (Oxford Illustrated Histories) (Paperback)
by Jonathan Riley-Smith (Editor)

There's a whole chapter in there on Zangi and the rules of war. Pretty basic stuff.

Because the Arab nations are all (except Iraq) ruled by war-mongering tyrants who either support 7th century judicial systems that mutilate petty criminals or adher to soviet-style systems where talk against the Party can get you 'disappeared'.

And the Arab people seem complicit, no democratic regime has survived scarcely over a decade in the Arab world and no leader has ever been overthrown by a mass public movement.

Israel, on the other hand, is a liberal democracy where one can do whatever one wants so long as it is not explosive. Granted it has some issues with Palestinians but at the end of the day they share our values, and I am not ashamed to say that I support the side that shares my values in a conflict.

Hold on, Deep Kimchi, are you talking about Zengi? The Atabeg of Mosul? I know all about him. (sorry for this, I was actually getting confused, until I turned my brain's motor on).

Like Saddam?

Saddam was actually despised by a large chunk of radical islamists due to his secular policies, so yes (for some) like Saddam.

Also lets mention that "we" aren't the ones executing Saddam, but rather the Iraqis people, who have suffered so brutally at his hands for over two decades now. There is also a slight difference in executing someone because of their presiding over genocide and mass murder and wanting to kill someone because they stand in the way of the imposition of a tyrannical, global Islamic theocracy.

These are subtle nuances that we shouldn't ignore.
