There are startlingly few music threads. Lets change that.
What are you listening to right now? What about what you've been listening to lately?
Lately I've been listening to a few bands I've come across. Mostly sally (www.sallymusic.com) and Transfer (http://www.myspace.com/transfer).
Sprinkled with a bit of Joanna Newsom (http://myspace.com/joannanewsom).

Virgin Radio. "White Wedding" by Billy Idol at the mo.
"It's a... Nice day to start agaaaaiiiiiin!"
Pah, just finished. Think it's the Stereophonics now, but don't know the song. Considering Virgin's playlist must be all of 20 songs I should know them all backwards by now...
Well, I'm not listening to anything at this particular moment (I'm at work)...
...however, lately I've been listening to a lot of Tool, with some Beastie Boys and Blind Guardian to mix it up.

The same stuff I always listen to. Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Wagner, etc. I have been looking into composers I've ignored so far, like Dvořák and Bizet, though. However, I've never found myself interested in most Baroque music (Bach has some great stuff, but he seems to have had a lot of crappy contemporaries). Most of the 20th century composers are also not my thing. I think a lot of them spent too much of their careers on ideas that were, to be blunt, rather stupid, like total serialism.

You should really listen to some 20th C Composers. Shoenberg isn't my thing either but try... Concerto for Orchestra by Bela Bartok, St Lukes Passion by Penderecki, Harmonium by John Adams (also Short ride in a fast machine is a classic. On the baroque side: Scarlatti's harpsichord sonatas are really worth your time.

I've been meaning to look into Bartok, actually. However, I can't stand the minimalist composers. Their work bores the hell out of me. It's too repetitive and lacks the developmental and contrasting qualities I've come to enjoy in most classical music.

Quite a bit of Dead Kennedys for me recently. In fact, as I type this I'm listening to California Uber Alles, although my favourite song by them will probably always be Holiday in Cambodia.
On a slightly stranger note (haha, its a pun! Get it? ;) ) I was recently browsing through a box of CDs at a jumble sale when I came upon a CD by a Japanese band I'd never heard of for the low, low price of 20p. I decided that it was a risk worth taking, and bought it. The CD was Shibu-hata by Shibusashirazu, a contemporary jazz group. Not usually my thing, but its been growing on me ever since.

Yes! I just saw the musical on stage on Saturday, and I'm already obsessed with the phantom. Not to mention I absolutely love Michael Crawford's voice, the way it's so expressive, beautiful, and haunting.
Although it is kind of weird to hear him sing "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar...mostly because he still kind of sounds like the phantom.
Anyway, that's pretty much what I've been listening to.

First of all, ALL of the bands you mentioned are mainstream. I still remember how much that 1000 Foot Krutch song got overplayed...
Second, Nirvana is probably the most mainstream rock band, ever.

AFI is mediocre, not horrible, Sing the Sorrow wasn't bad, but their recent stuff doesn't sound too good, and the stuff before Sing the Sorrow pretty well sucked.
Pantera had one good album.

Well, I've been going through a punk rock stage lately. Well, not exactly. I got into the Ramones after seeing the Roger Corman Masterpiece "Rock and Roll High School" and that sort of got me listening to "The Clash" who seemed to have more intelligent, better crafted music, that does what most modern rock can't: Play to the genres that inspired rock in the first place.
On my player: The Clash "I'm Not Down."
The Sex Pistols were recommended, but, well, really couldn't get into them. It's like the flipside of "The Clash".
If anyone can recommend a couple good songs by the Sex Pistols I might change my mind on them.

The Sex Pistols aren't everyone's cup of tea. You might like Wire...i'm not familiar with all of their work but they seem to be of that more streamlined brand of punk.
I would highly recommend giving the Stiff Little Fingers a shot too, but I don't know if they're exactly what you're looking for.
If you want to look at American punk/hardcore, I usually suggest the Dead Kennedys, but you might find them too abrasive. Another is Bad Brains, they have an interesting blend of reggae and hardcore that is worth having a look at.
I'm guessing you prefer London Calling over the first two Clash albums? (Personally, I greatly prefer their earlier work.)

See, the reason I got into the Ramones and the Clash is they seem closer to their roots then other Punk I've listened to. Most punk just sounds like shouting to me.
And, with no offense to the Clash's earlier stuff, I do think that a band has one defining album. With Jethro Tull, it's Aqualung. With the Beach Boys, it's Pet Sounds. No matter what kind of music, there will be that defining album. And with the Clash, it's London Calling.
But that's probably more because the songs on the album are more CONSISTANTLY good, as opposed to some really good songs mixed in some of the ones I am less found of. Of course, i have the American Self titled as opposed to the UK one, which I believe does not have "Clash City Rockers" which is a song that, well, I just don't like.
Don't kill me for this... (http://www.sovmusic.ru/)

Thought so. Give Wire a try then. The bad news is that most punk is pretty abrasive by definition - you'd probably be better off looking at some of the artier punk influenced bands of the 80s and 90s rather than typical punk acts if you want a sound more in line with London Calling. I'm fond of The Birthday Party....the Cure are pretty good too but not very recognisably punk. I hear good things about Joy Division as well but I don't know a lot of their stuff. I'm clutching at straws a little, you might hate the style of those groups. :p
Sonic Youth would probably be worth a look too, but they're a little different.
If you want to go back further in time, there's the Velvet Underground as well.

To be honest, I find London Calling a bit boring and "just OK" rather than anything amazing...but that's just me.

Check out The Undertones. Classic melodies, impassioned singing, great guitar work and a whole string of hit singles. A little poppy, but then, so were The Ramones.
Or, if you want it a bit more rock, go for The Undertones' spin-off group, That Petrol Emotion; though they were more patchy.
