Assuming that there is indeed a God, what do you think the deity's gender is? What's your reason for believing this?

A priest told me that in Genesis, the original Hebrew of God's name was a masculine root with a feminine extension. Jewish scholars please inform me if this is wrong.

One would assume that God is hermaphrodite, that is both sexes. However, in the animal world, when hermaphrodites mate, often the strongest one playes the male role. Since God is so much stronger than mortals this suggests that he will be male when he rapes us. For example when he made Mary pregnant with Jesus. (Since no consent was asked for, this was rape.)

Ok guys, I don't know if anyone here believes in God, but if you do, God is neither male or female. When Jesus came to earth (if u believe that) the world was going through a period in which males were all powerful and us chickies had no say. To think of god as one gender or the other, and to define that gender by sex alone, and to imply that god requires some method reproduction is so utterly two dimensional! THINK BIGGER & BROADER than that!

Also consider all the cultural baggage that contributors to the Bible must have carried in their time. That is to say, think of all the cultural baggage that we all carry, and try to imagine how that differed back in the times when the various parts of the Bible were being written. God is a god for ALL people at ALL times - so how must he therefore portray himself? Why must he be limited to a single gender or form?. For some he may seem harder to access, but he's never impossible to access.


That's my thought anyway.

God is not some strong being that has power over humans. Its the creator of everthing and its a single being without any counterpart. We humans are used to understand and analyze things with their counterparts like good bad alive dead black white male female but God doesnt have a counterpart. IT is unique. And according to Islam as all good comes from him all evıl also comes from him. He gives free choice over good and evil to humans and tells tham that evil will cause pain for them. And when you still chose it he doesnt just stop you, its your life after all. you cause yourself to go a positive or negative energy plane when you die by shaping your very soul in your life by your actions. And after the seperation of soul and body, soul has an eternity before it to exist whereas body turns into earth and flowers etc and continue its cycle.

Considering that even human gender is nothing more than an invention of our own minds, I'd say it would be pretty silly to assume that God will fit into any of our categories.

It is a level of existence in which we cannot comprehend his consciousness, if he has one (I say he just to describe god, not to define him as a male). God needs no gender. But I would find it funny if a christian got to heaven and was greeted by a homosexual God.

Actually, in Hebrew, God's name is actually a verb meaning "He causes to become". It carries the idea that he can become whatever is needed to carry out his purpose. As I recall, it is engendered male. However, lacking sexual organs (being a spirit), God would be neither male nor female.

The Bible claims differently as to YHWH's genitalia. It's in the passage in which YHWH moons Abraham. At least I think it was Abraham. YHWH moons someone anyways.
