The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a U.S. Navy intelligence ship, USS Liberty, in international waters about 12.5 nautical miles from the coast of the Sinai Peninsula, north of El Arish, by Israeli fighter planes and torpedo boats on June 8, 1967. It occurred during the Six-Day War, a conflict between Israel and the Arab states of Egypt, Jordan and Syria. The attack killed 34 U.S. servicemen and wounded at least 171.

12.5 nm from the coast, eh? That's cutting it a bit close. Maybe the Israelis thought the flag was from Liberia.

Its simple. Israel did it with unmarked planes, hoping we would think the Egyptians did it. That way they would have our support in the war.

ugh, theres no point goign to discuss these incidents

if they were trying to make it seem like Egyptians did it, why did Isralite torp boats shoot at the ship afterwards?

International politics...and the inevitable conflicts that arise...are so tricky. Whatever their reasons, the death of American servicemen is an inexcusable travesty. Although I have a hard time believing this was intentional...

I still think it was mistaken identity plus the ship being too close to national waters.

I have yet to hear a serious motive for Israel risking the fury of a major ally in the middle of a war, and until I do, I will accept the official explanation.

come on so it was a blue-on-blue these things happen. The British lost more men in Iraq (part I) to attacks by US forces than Iraqi.

Only if you take 'part 1' to mean the minutes immediately preceeding a friendly fire incident and the minutes immediately after these incidents.

If you pull up the actual figures, that's simply not true.

I've heard it as 9 deaths inflicted by the US forces, and 7 by Iraqi forces. Presumably the other 8 deaths were accidental, road accidents and heart attacks.
